Here we go... last home game recap for the season.
So yeah... er... ummm... WOW. Tough year to be a fan specially a season ticket holder. We could have easily watched six losses. What really stunk about it all is there was a lot of hype coming into the season. The first few games the students and locals were there in mass like I have not seen in a long time. To have around 43 + on a Friday night, there was hope. That hope was squashed.
Quick game recap: Defense was pretty awesome and is looks bright. Franklin played a lot yesterday and next year with JT and Mos playing, it could be our best backer crew since the 90's. Reddish has really come on this year. Really only one play that I think hurt was the second touchdown when I believe Whigham had perfect position the reciever just made a great play as you expect them to do. We did have a couple of dropped int's again. Thompson had a monster day working on his volleyball skills as he knocked down at least three passes.
Offense: What can you expect when you get down to your fourth QB and you are plugging the line with 3rd string OL. PTG really went down hill two games ago and has not resurfaced. He again danced in the hole instead of taking his first cut which cost major yardage. AAM really should have been in more but didn't, I am not sure if he is injured. Erv should have gotten more of PTG carries. West did dog it on two plays one in the first half and the INT in the second half. It is what it is, and I am thankful he choose SU.
I don't recall Ish getting any passes. Lewis has had a very solid season and made some great catches yesterday. He too is really dinged up. The fade to Custis in the corer was a PI that did not get called. As he went to jump the DB pushes him in the chest. Bad no call.
The thing that really turned the tide yesterday was the no call on the fair catch with the additional 15 added to the end. This was a bad bad bad bad no call. The D made a couple of nice stops but it allowed their punter to pin us on the 1 for multiple series. We just could not get out of our end zone in the third quarter. It really seems to be the name of the game this year. You can go back and watch multiple games and see multiple bad calls that effected the game. I really hate saying it because I am all about the play on the field. Which leads me to the season.
The story of the season:
1. Injuries, I believe it was 2011 when we lost 5 straight after a great start to not make a bowl. This is the same thing this year. We are not a program that can sustain the kind of injuries we did and be successful.
2.Offense, We better figure out who we are here or we are going to be in a world of hurt and wrestle with WF every year to be the winner of the loser. We have some nice pieces, got to find the QB to get the ball to them.
3.We need speed. Watching TCU play... They are not the biggest but they fly.
4. LB's will be good/great, but the line and secondary will be huge questions.
5. With Murphy coming on, our kicking game is much improved. Watching at half time yesterday, Norton is starting to also get his groove back. He was bombing some 45 yard FG's.
6. Uniforms, Mojo? Love em? Hate em? possibly the hottest topic of the year.
7. RB, Outside of Erv, who we got? Where did GMII go? McFar had been dinged up most of the year.
8. Can we hang onto and close out this recruiting season or will a blistering start fade to a miserable end?
9.The Mod squad, the coaching staff was touted as being a "Fam". What is going to happen here in the end of the season and will it hurt the program dragging us further or will it be addition from subtraction?
10.Maryland, as I posted it after the game, it really is going to be the game that killed us.
11. The fans were there to start but that quickly faded. What a tough year to be a season ticket holder. Most of the games were miserable to watch as we were we always left with hoping. Those who were there did their best to get behind the team and drives just fizzled.
12.Scheduling really hurt. Hopefully we never see an 8 game run again!
13.We were much more competitive this year with the "big boys" but the the combination of coaching errors, players errors, shooting ourselves in the foot, and poor poor officiating really cost us. I think the combination of all really was bad. See minute 1:17 and explains it all. We did poorly controlling the controllable.
We have two more games to leave it all out there. I hope we can do some big things, and go out big for our seniors. I want to thank them all for what they gave to our program!
