Wow, Pitt was not impressive...this was a game Syracuse could easily have won.

Special teams again played a key role in the game. Don't know how that ball bounced like it did but Graham has to fall on it. He has been around long enough to know that. Really disappointing, as was the reaction of the defense, which seems to give up a TD immediately after the great special teams snafu that seems to happen every game.

Our best chance to win was to run the ball...the staff knew it but falling behind early really screwed up the game plan. Pitt has one of the best pass rushes in college football but they are undersized and struggle against the run.

Thought Bailey again did a good job, getting everything he could out of his body. The kid has a big heart and never gave up on the season. Thought Jerome Smith had a fine game...to me this game was a bit of a passing of the guard as Bailey gave the starting job to Smith. Really like Jerome's power and aggressive North/South running style. I like Gulley and like the HS RBs we are involved with but to me, Smith looks very likely to be our RB of the immediate future. If there is a positive to be taken from this game, it is the play of Smith and Desir, who I thought played very well in limited snaps.

Thought Nassib played decently. Quite sure the 1st Nassib pick was on the WR who ran the wrong route. Chew should have had the one late in the 4th. The one where he was running for his life in the 4th and had the ball knocked loose again was not his fault...but he needs to tuck it away when running...the fumble on the 1st down run was definitely on him. He isn't a great QB and never will be but he is more than an adequate QB, is nowhere near our biggest problem and like it or not, he will be the starter again next season. The other QBs are not remotely close to him right now. Though I expect Hunt will make a move on Loeb and move into the backup position here this spring.

Thought Lemon had another excellent game. Don't know why the staff kind of ignored him the last couple of games...they do some interesting things at times but I am glad they featured him again. He did a great job...hard to believe he can do the tihngs he is doing is playing hurt. Hope the surgery on his shoulder is successful...we are going to really need him next season. My Christmas wish for him is to have a senior season where he is 100% healthy all season long.

The drop off from him to the next WR is alarmingly sharp. West, Chew and Graham all have some issues, though West, even with the awful fumble today, looks promising. My guess is that the 2 deep at WR next season will start with Lemon, West, Graham and either Foster or Sales, though there are a number of other players who could jump in here. I think the WRs will definitely be better as a unit. Chew was great against bad teams but a non factor in conference play. The young guys will be bigger, stronger, more physical and tougher.

At TE we have Stephens, Wales and Cutler, along with some young guys. Provo is a better blocker than these guys and we will miss him here but they run better than Nick and I think we will overall be a little better than last season here. I think Nick, who was surely banged up, struggled to run a 4.8 40 the second half of the season.

No offense to Hay or Tiller but I hope we never recruit a JUCO OL again. You can see why they ended up at Nassau all the time. Not the sharpest tools in the shed. They were the 2 power run blockers on the OL, which is going to make the power run game really hard to execute next season. There should be some spirited competition for those spots this spring. Robinson made some noise on the scout team this fall, has prototype OL size and that tough physical style of play DM loves. I think he is going to win a spot...maybe Hickey gets the other, maybe they move Trudo. Bottom line, we might lose a little in the run blocking department but we should be better pass blocking. Hay was basically a revolving door out there on passing plays except he held more than a revolving door normally does, and handed out more cheap shots too.

Thought Shamarko, for the first time this season, looked like the Shamarko of last season. He should be a lock at SS. FS is up for grabs but I think everyone is looking forward to seeing Eskridge emerge here next season. Hope the stories of his athletic gifts turn out to be true.

The loss of Lyn hurt...to me, he is our best CB. Anderson really struggled tackling today, as he has all season. He has to get tougher...but he isn't half bad in pass coverage. Both will be helped playing without casts. Thought none of our CBs had a very good season. Will miss Scott, who was probably the best of a bad bunch. I think he kept playing after dislocating a finger today. Not sure if they will move Desir back to CB...if so, he has a great chance to start.

Jones had another strong game, almost broke Sunseri's jaw with one hit. You could see he is not 100% after his injury watching him return his interception. I suspect he will have surgery after the season as well. We need him back next season...there is some depth and some good players on the DL but he is the guy who requires double teams and makes the whole defense work.

This will be an important off season for DM. He must reorganize his staff, must figure out what kind of offense he want to run/get an OC to guide it, must address the special teams disaster, and I think he has to add a couple of recruiting specialists to the staff. You need a balance of field coaches and recruiters on a great staff. Right now we have too many field coaches and not enough recruiters.

I think the OL next year is going to be a lot more athletic and will allow DM to do a lot more than he could do with the line he has had the last 2 seasons. I genuinely do not know what he is going to do on offense but it would seem that this unit will be extremely poorly suited to the power run attack, so I am hoping against hope he goes with something more progressive. If he doesn't, it does not bode well for the future.

The OL will be young next season, that's for sure.

Could be good, could be bad.

3 months until Manley.

this will be an important offseason for doug. he has to TOTALLY REBUILD this team and his COACHING METHODOLOGY.

I'd sure hate to sit through a game where you think the qb was less than decent. Yikes.

And you thought Scott was our best CB of a bad bunch? Wow. We must have been watching different games. I know you said Lyn was our best, and I agree, but I don't think Scott was anywhere near even second best.

"Wow, Pitt was not impressive...this was a game Syracuse could easily have won."

The sad thing about 2011 is that no Big East team was particularly impressive. Matter of fact the league this year, top to bottom, is the worst it has ever been (aided by season ending injuries to star players). And sadder still was that Syracuse was the least impressive of a bad bunch. What was our worst game? Hard to say for sure as so many truly stunk.

i am excited for graham and lemon next year I really think we could have two big playmakers. I am hoping for a sales return I mean it cant hurt at all.

Thought Nassib played decently. Quite sure the 1st Nassib pick was on the WR who ran the wrong route.

Had to be the wrong route -- Chew wasn't running a slant for some reason.

You aren't kidding. This off-season will determine DM's future at SU in my opinion. He has alot to switch up, starting with the offense and some of the coaches.

Hackett HAS to go. He is way too conservative. Need to install an offense that is a hybrid of what they are doing now, along with some field-stretching plays. If Sales is back next year, it will help them open up the field.

NEED to hire a ST coach. No need to elaborate here.

You mentioned we have too many field coaches and not enough recruiters. I would say we don't have enough of either, especially field coaches. If Schiano somehow leaves RU, I would go after one or 2 of his assistants ASAP for recruiting purposes alone. They've established RU in NJ recruiting beds.

It seems that the players are starting to revolt from within the program. Need to either straighten out the bad seeds, or get rid of them.

We simply cannot afford to have another player purge. I don't know what's going on, but if it's something particularly bad then Marrone HAS to find a way to address it and turn atttudes around without losing players.

If there's an exodus this offseason it's a failure of program management and I don't want to hear a single excuse about depth ever again.

Don't hold your breath on any change in offensive philosphy..At his lunches Marrone has casually voiced in "disdain" for the spread offense philosophy. Somethin that stuck in my head from earlier in the year, was that he said that his philosophy was the only that works at the next level...and if executed properly, can not be defended.. I hope that Hunt has "it" between the ears..because to me Marrone values that more than athletic ability when it comes to the QB position..

sutomcat- Do you think Macky is a lock at center? I believe that the OL 2 Deep will look like this.
Pugh-Chibane-Trudo-Alexander-Hickey
Kurtis-Foy-Macpherson-Phillips-Robinson

no way he takes macky out ... no way

hopefully foy or robinson can push chibane

I really, really, really hope that's not exactly what he said, or thinks.

Every O can be defended.

Ugh.

A few quick thoughts for 2012.
-Will not miss Hay or Marinovich. Will miss Provo, Bailey (more than most realize), Also think Tiller's was pretty decent.
-Would love to just stop using a FB, unless Jerome Smith is your fullback. Between Nassib not running and the FB not running, that's 2 guys who are total nonthreats.
-Would love to see some designed QB runs next year. I'd like to think Nassib protects the ball better if running isn't so foreign to him.
-Hope we see Graham more, not sure why we forgot about him-Showed me a lot more than West.
-Would love to see Gulley and Smith together when we have 2 RB sets.
-Would love if we don't give the WR 10 yards leeway to catch the ball, like we often did in the 1st half of games this year.
-Think the D will be much better next year, though getting Lyn back is important. We lose very little on D, though losing phillip Thomas hurts.

That's a statement that should give people pause for concern, because you need the right combination of players to run such a rigid system. And that's something that Syracuse might have trouble getting, given some of their basic challenges on the recruiting front. If Marrone remains committed to this course, I'm afraid that the program is in for some tough sledding. I remember when LSU ran into problems from one of their more stubborn former head coaches. Luckily, the groundwork he laid helped pave the way for the next two coaches to bring the Tigers to the elite level.

Don't hold your breath on any change in offensive philosphy...
So there you go. And you know what, if we can get an experienced OC who is willing to run what Marrone wants, and a QB who can throw the deep ball, and a general talent upgrade - all of which should be possible - I wouldn't mind. The glimpses I've seen of what he wants us to be on offense are fine by me.

If Tiller works hard to get ready for the combine, I think he gets drafted at some point, he has the physical attributes, size and strength. About Nassib, I believe he has been instructed by the staff to avoid running. He was a track guy in high school, a 400m runner. He will never be a Denard Robinson, but the opportunities to make 5 yds are there, he is just looking to pass. The lack of receivers who can seperate dosen't help. Seeing Lemon running by himself, open on the pattern was a suprise. Usually, we have a DB draped all over the WR. Provo was good, better upside with Wales, nice catch yesterday and Thompson. Bigger size and experience up the middle, meaning Macky, the DT's and MLB, Spruil verbalizing his need for more getting bigger, will help. Need to get the heir apparent at QB, Hunt, Kinder, or whoever, some game experience next year, so that when Nassib leaves, someone is taking his first live game play in 2013

thats just plain ignorant-macky didnt play because he is macs grandson-its not some big frigging conspiracy-
he started because the others were injured-and unless they are are injured again next year he will never start again-
or do you think maybe marrone takes out the starters agian on purpose so he can play a undersized and weak center durring a season that may get him fired?:bat:
