When the regular season ends, I suspect we will look back to this game and realize it was where the conference championship was won. We lose this one, and UC, which has a relatively easy road from here on in with the unbalanced schedules the BE uses, had a real chance of winning the conference. Nice games by the 3 vets: Scoop, who ran the offense well and played under control, KJ, who played his best game in a while and made a number of big plays, especially in that key run that blew the game open halfway through the 2nd half, and BT, who played a fine overall game for the Orange. JB coached his butt off tonight. Seemed almost every set play called after a TO with SU in possession ended up with an easy basket. Somehow he got Kris out of the clouds and somehow he was able to get Rakim to wake up and play productively. Made some nice adjustments in the zone too but our guards were able to shred the aggressive UC man and get in the paint for quality shots almost every time down after the 5 minute mark in the 1st half. Cronin had no answers. The big surprise tonight was the strong play of Rakim Christmas in the 2nd half. He didn't score much and I suspect his numbers won't be startling, but he played some quality defense and got some badly needed rebounds when we desperately needed a strong inside presence. With Keita again a complete non-entity, it was Rak or nothing, and this time, the kid came through. Southerland played surprisingly well against a physical in your face man defense. It helped that he was covered most of the time by a guard and had the option of going inside at times. Fair played up to his name, still loses way too many rebounds to people jumping over his back (needs to learn to use his body to shield against this). But he made some big shots including one with 2 people in his face early in the 2nd half that was important. Dion continues to wallow deep, suddenly in a bad slump, playing like he did when he was so awful as a frosh. Talk about wild sea changes in play. I hope he finds himself again soon. We really need him.
