I suppose I should start by apologizing for the lack of 'My Takes' for the last few games. There been a variety of reasons for this. Mostly, it is been because there's little positive to talk about.
Before talking about the game today however, I want to complement Crusty, cuseguy and subarney for throwing a great tailgate at MetLife Stadium. Salad job guys and much appreciated.
I guess I should also mention what happened last week when I was on the field for the UL game. first, props to Texan Mark for getting me on the field. I've never had a field pass before, and it was a very interesting experience. Not much to say about the game, but I will be laid a certain interesting experience. We stood next to a guy wearing a field pass with former player on it, so we knew he used to play for SU. He looked to be in his early 30s, very skinny, maybe 5 foot nine, perhaps 170 pounds. he wore glasses and a suit. Mark whispered to me 'he must've been a kicker. Who could it be? Could it be Shadle?'
His face was very familiar so it was frustrating. We wrecked our minds for five or 10 minutes before Mark told me 'I think I know who it is. He's going to be Troy Nunes?' Once he asked me, I knew he was right. We were both shocked at how small and light Troy is right now. Could it be that Marci drained them of all of his bulk? Inquiring minds want to know.
We had a wonderful tailgate this morning. Jeremy and now put out a great spread, featuring burgers, coneys, juice regular famous breakfast sandwiches, a delicious chili, but potatoes with ranch dressing and much more. Good to see many old friends and good to meet so many new people as well. There are too many to name so I will just say it was wonderful talking to you all of you.
The band was in fine form today, and had a bunch of interesting things going on. First let me give me the tube account: it was nine as expected. They're doing a nice ACC logo the face as well as the New York State outline and matching very well. At one point in the game, da maestro repeatedly played a section of horror music, which was repeated by the band, then da maestro again played a section of music, and again the band repeated. This went on for quite a while. Pretty cool and innovative.
At halftime, the SUMB performance was highlighted by a guest appearance by a renowned trombone player from the New York Philharmonic, who played a beautiful very involved piece of music, as the band marched to the motion of a trombone extending and coming back. Very cool.
I want to complement the Florida State fans who went to the game. They came in large numbers, and cheered their team quite loudly. I would've I would estimate that they had at least 3000 fans in attendance, A number that would change schools like Boston College, Connecticut and even Rutgers. Well done.
I ended up sitting next to Nycfsn fan, who of course is extremely knowledgeable about college basketball, but also knows his college football. He told me that he and young Bailey Evan talking about Steve Ishmael the talented Syracuse true fresh wide receiver, and both have been hoping for more touches for Steve today. I agreed with him on this. We were both happy to see the game plan include more looks for Steve,;this is something that has been needed for some time.
Let's talk about the game unit by unit. Will start with the offense. There was of course, a great focus on the offense this week, with the change in offensive coordinator and the new QBs. I was impressed with the work Lester did today. Thought his game plan was the best guys game plan we've had all season, no question about that. Better yet, I like his playcalling. Thought he did a nice balance of run plays and pass plays. Thought he threw the ball down the field how refreshing number of times. Thought he was clearly less predictable than his predecessor.it was, in my opinion, a very promising start.
I was pleased with the performance of both new quarterbacks. I thought that both quarterbacks played without fear, we're very aggressive, and were not intimidated at all.they made some mistakes to be sure, and hopefully will learn lessons about being careful with the ball, but they made a lot of place, and showed me reasons for optimism for the future.I really hope that Austin is okay, and will be able to play again the rest of the season. It will be a shame if he got his chance to play, and had it taken away almost immediately.
I thought the offense of line did very well against a talented FSU DL. I hope John Miller, who left the game in the second half and did not return, is going to be okay. They did a nice job with past biking, and opened up some nice holes for the running game as well.
Flemming quietly had his best game of his career, West again had a big play down the sideline, and I think today was Steve Ishmael's coming out party. Good to see these guys step up with AB and BE out.
Let's talk about the defense. I thought our basic philosophy was to keep the safeties back and give FSU all the short passes they wanted all game long. pretty sound strategy given the talent and balance between the teams. It was really striking to see how much bigger and faster FSU's skill people were compared to ours.I don't think we blitzed very much, but somehow our undersized defensiveline managed to put good pressure on Winston pretty consistently. If it wasn't for some very beneficial calls from the referees, unquestionable late hits, and I'm questionable passenger Ference, the game would've been much closer. It took a great effort by Winston to keep FSU's offense on track, scoring points regularly.
There were a lots of Syracuse the funders who played well. The first that comes to mind isBrandon Reddish, who is quietly having an all-conference season at CB. He was just terrific today. I thought I'd make a Robinson and Robert Welch were excellent at defensive end. I thought Wayne Williams and John Raymon were great at defensive tackle as well. I can't believe how well Raymen is playing so quickly after getting back on the field. Great to see WW playing close to his capabilities as well. Ron Thompson and Isaiah Johnson also continue to improve week by week.
That's a linebacker struggled a bit more, but they were up against him Reiko vacillates from the Seminoles. The same applies to the safeties, who had their hands full with a bunch of Seminoles, especially Nick O'Leary, a guy who will have a long career in the NFL.
Props to Riley Dixon, who had another fine game at punter. Props to cCole Murphy, who did well at placekicker. Thought the coverage units for pot returns and kick ass did quite well, given the extraordinary athletes they had to try and cover.
A loss is still a loss. SU is still in grave danger of not going to a bowl game. But a number of good things happened and for now anyway, hope remains alive that the season can be salvaged.
After the game, we had a nice tailgate. Props to Jeremy for enthralling the masses with Don Rickles like sarcasm and some imaginative storytelling. As always, it was enjoyable breaking down the game with knowledgeable friends. Let's hope next time, we have an opportunity to discuss a victory instead.
