I'm certainly not a fan of Willard and I'm pretty ambivalent about SHU as a school. That article seems like a PR piece for Powell. It doesn't even delve into subsequent Dr visits that determined he had a serious knee injury.
I will say that not all meniscus tears are equal. Here's my own anecdotal evidence: My knee slid out of joint once when I twisted while squatting down cleaning a spot on the floor. I had to move my lower leg with my hand to get it to slide back into the right plane. It hurt like heck to put it back but the leg wouldn't move on it's own. I went to a highly regarded orthopedic surgeon to get checked out. An mri revealed a meniscus tear. The Dr told me it was pretty minor given my age (late 30s) and athletics history. He told me a high percentage of people who played sports in high school had some degree of meniscus tear (I have no way of knowing if this is accurate).
The course of treatment was strengthening the muscles around the knee - nothing more. That was about 15 years ago. I keep in shape and am very careful when I'm in a deep squat. I haven't had a recurrence. Take this for what it's worth.
