I have read a lot of the posts on here and haven't seen Nate Hackett's name come up. I apologize if there was already a discussion about him. I would like to see what people would think about him taking over as HC.

He's been the OC at Syracuse and had great success with his no huddle offense. For those who want to keep Shafer as DC, this would be one way to do it. He's young and full of energy that would be great for both game day and in recruiting.

In Buffalo his starting QBs were EJ Manual, Kyle Orton, Thad Lewis and Jeff Tuel. That doesn't even include expecting Kolb to start the first year and having to throw Manual in "unprepared". He won games with Thad Lewis and almost beat a decent Chiefs team with 4th string UDFA rookie Tuel if not for one bad pass.

I love the uptempo offense and his enthusiasm for the game and players. He would have been my choice to replace Marrone in Buffalo over Rex. If not for a Les Miles type of HC coming in (which is unlikely), I think Hackett is a better choice than some of the other names around.

I like Hackett but he needs more time before he's ready for this. We're not a mid-major. Maybe he could land a HC gig at a Sun Belt school or something first.

Who in their right minds believes a head coach can magically be demoted to a coordinator slot and have that work?

Seriously. Is there precedence?

It would be one of the most naive, disastrous things ever.

You will get a similar offense with Scott Frost and more experience at the college level.

lol I didn't even read that part. I don't think that has ever happened in the history of the sport.

You would need the fired HC to be without any ego or pride whatsoever.

And you'd be more likely to find a unicorn than a football coach without an ego.

Hackett will bounce around in the NFL from here on out IMO.

thats just a super-duper idea.

full circle to the 3 P5 HCs on marrone's underwhelming staff...

I'm keeping a log.

- Shafer for DC
- No coach will come here because we have a difficult road schedule in 2017
- Don't hire a pass happy coach because every other year we play at Pitt and BC and the weather might be bad.
- Don't hire air raid because they don't play defense well.
- Don't hire air raid because Briles and Leach haven't won a national title yet.
- Don't hire a guy from the west coast who runs a high impact offense because GRob, Pariani, Perry, Lane, Moss couldn't make WCO work

Coaching changes are an interesting time on the board. Makes me want to go to the hoops board and watch people complain about the zone as do-it-all Lydon blocks another shot.

Although i find the idea laughable
Luke fickel was HC at ohio state in '11 and became d coordinator when urban showed up

Let's not focus on the Shafer as DC part. I saw someone suggest it elsewhere and thought if that was ever going to happen this may be a situation.

As for Hackett, how is he less qualified than Scott Frost? Scott Frost just became an Offensive Coordinator in 2013. That makes Nate more experienced as on OC at college and NFL levels. Frost is also running the Oregon/Chip Kelly offense with the top players/athletes in the country.

Hackett developed Nassib and an offense for him to run from scouting Jim Kelly's K-Gun from the 90's. He built that offense himself and was successful with mostly players that were 2-3 star recruits and weren't drafted highly into the NFL.

On top of that, Hackett knows the East Coast. The only ties Frost has to Syracuse recruits is Eric Dungey.

So, complain all you want about "every former Syracuse staff person", but he's got more going for him than Scott Frost in my opinion and is just as "former Syracuse coach" as Orgeron. Tell me how he's not a legitimate option with some thought rather than "Nope". Although I am sure you put a lot of thought into that.

When Marrone left there were people who thought that Hackett would have been a decent choice to succeed him... many preferred him over Shafer.

I don't have an opinion on that one way or the other...just saying.

Fickel didn't get fired as HC, he was interim HC during sweater vest's suspension and when Tressel resigned he was promoted to HC for the remainder of the season. Meyer was hired and he was asked to be DC.

Totally different situations.
