This year I will again be computing the top 25 NBA players in terms of total “Net Points”, (points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks – missed field goals – missed free throws- turnovers –fouls committed) and breaking down their stats per 48 minutes, (since that’s the length of an NBA game). I’ll also compute their “Offensive Efficiency”, (points minus missed field goals and free throws), and “Floor Game” (Net Points minus Offensive Efficiency). The players are ranked by total Net Points because a player with a superior rate who missed games had no impact on those games. A player with a less productive rate who played in those games did have an impact on them. I’ll also keep track of how former Syracuse players are doing. I’ll update them each month. Glossary: TNP = Total net Points, M = minutes per game, Per 48 minutes: P = points, R = rebounds A= assists, S = steals, B = blocks, MFG = missed field goals, MFT = missed free throws, TO = turnovers, PF = personal fouls, NP = Net Points, OE = Offensive Efficiency, FG = Floor Game James Harden HOU 2337TNP 36.8M 47.2P 8.7R 9.8A 2.6S 1.00B 17.8MFG 1.7MFT 6.5TO 4.1PF 39.2NP 27.7OE 12.0FG Giannis Antetokounmpo MIL 2206TNP 32.7M 40.5P 18.3R 8.6A 1.9S 2.2B 10.7MFG 3.8MFT 5.5TO 4.7PF 46.8NP 26.0OE 20.8FG Nikola Vucevic ORL 2085TNP 31.4M 31.8P 18.4R 5.9A 1.5S 1.7B 12.5MFG 0.9MFT 3.0TO 3.0PF 39.9NP 18.4OE 21.5FG Nikola Jokic DEN 2083TNP 31.3M 30.7P 16.6R 11.1A 2.1S 1.1B 11.3MFG 1.2MFT 4.8TO 4.4PF 39.9NP 18.2OE 21.7FG Karl-Anthony Towns MIN 2046TNP 33.1M 35.4P 18.0R 4.9A 1.3S 2.4B 11.9MFG 1.4MFT 4.5TO 5.5PF 38.7NP 22.1OE 16.6FG Kevin Durant GS 2023TNP 34.6M 36.0P 8.8R 8.1A 1.0S 1.5B 11.8MFG 1.0MFT 4.0TO 2.8PF 35.8NP 23.2OE 12.8FG Rudy Gobert UTAH 1952TNP 31.8M 23.0P 19.4R 3.0A 1.2S 3.5B 4.46MFG 3.5MFT 2.4TO 4.3PF 36.4NP 16.0OE 20.4FG Paul George OKC 1886TNP 36.9M 36.5P 10.6R 5.4A 2.9S 0.6B 15.3MFG 1.5MFT 3.5TO 3.6PF 32.1NP 19.7OE 12.4FG Andre Drummond DET 1881TNP 33.5M 24.8P 22.3R 2.0A 2.8S 2.5B 8.9MFG 3.1MFT 3.2TO 4.9PF 34.0NP 12.8OE 21.3FG Russell Westbrook OKC 1873TNP 36.0M 30.5P 14.7R 14.3A 2.6S 0.6B 15.4MFG 2.8MFT 5.9TO 4.5PF 34.1NP 12.3OE 21.8FG Damian Lillard PORT 1854TNP 35.4M 35.0P 6.3R 9.3A 1.8S 0.6B 14.4MFG 0.8MFT 3.6TO 2.5PF 31.4NP 19.8OE 11.6FG Joel Embiid PHIL 1834TNP 33.7M 39.2P 19.4R 5.2A 1.0S 2.7B 13.8MFG 2.8MFT 5.0TO 4.7PF 41.2NP 22.6OE 18.6FG LaMarcus Aldridge SA 1794TNP 33.2M 30.9P 13.3R 3.5A 0.8S 1.9B 11.3MFG 1.1MFT 2.6TO 3.2PF 32.2NP 18.5OE 13.7FG Bradley Beal WAS 1756TNP 36.9M 33.3P 6.5R 7.1A 1.9S 0.9B 13.3MFG 1.4MFT 3.6TO 3.6PF 27.8NP 18.6OE 9.2FG Ben Simmons PHIL 1743TNP 34.2M 23.8P 12.4R 10.8A 2.0S 1.1B 7.5MFG 3.0MFT 4.9TO 3.7PF 31.0NP 13.3OE 17.7FG Anthony Davis NO 1736TNP 33.0M 37.7P 17.4R 5.2A 2.3S 3.5B 12.9MFG 2.3MFT 2.9TO 3.4PF 45.1NP 22.5OE 22.6FG Kemba Walker CHAR 1718TNP 34.9M 35.2P 6.1R 8.1A 1.7S 0.6B 16.0MFG 1.2MFT 3.5TO 2.2PF 28.8NP 18.0OE 10.8FG Steph Curry GS 1638TNP 33.7M 38.7P 7.6R 7.4A 1.9S 0.5B 14.6MFG 0.5MFT 4.0TO 3.4PF 33.6NP 23.6OE 10.0FG Tobias Harris LAC 1587TNP 34.7M 27.7P 10.9R 3.9A 0.9S 0.6B 10.8MFG 0.7MFT 2.5TO 3.1PF 26.9NP 16.2OE 10.7FG Blake Griffin DET 1578TNP 35.0M 33.7P 10.3R 7.4A 1.0S 0.5B 13.2MFG 2.5MFT 4.6TO 3.6PF 29.0NP 18.0OE 11.0FG DeMar DeRozen, SA 1561TNP 34.9M 29.2P 8.2R 8.5A 1.5S 0.6B 12.2MFG 1.3MFT 3.6TO 3.2PF 27.7NP 15.7OE 12.0FG LeBron James LAL 1561TNP 35.7M 37.2P 11.5R 11.3A 1.8S 0.8B 13.3MFG 3.5MFT 4.9TO 2.3PF 38.6NP 20.4OE 18.2FG Kyrie Irving BOS 1525TNP 33.0M 34.6P 7.3R 10.1A 2.2S 0.7B 13.8MFG 0.7MFT 3.7TO 3.6PF 33.1NP 20.1OE 12.0FG Kawhi Leonard TOR 1525TNP 35.9M 37.6P 10.3R 4.7A 2.5S 0.6B 13.4MFG 1.5MFT 2.8TO 2.0PF 36.0NP 22.7OE 13.3FG Julius Randle NO 1422TNP 30.6M 33.7P 13.6R 4.9A 1.1S 1.0B 11.1MFG 2.8MFT 4.5TO 5.3PF 30.6NP 19.8OE 10.8FG Comment: I’d give the MVP to Antetokounmpo, a better all-round player than James Harden, who is the greatest scorer. Harden’s deficit in missed shots negates his scoring advantage. Giannis’ rebounding advantage more than negates everything else. He’s nearly as good a passer. He missed more free throws but has fewer turnovers. And his team had the best record in the league. Not far behind GA are Anthony Davis and Joel Embiid, two other do-it-all big men. The old king, LeBron James, is still highly productive but he’s starting to miss games and his team stinks. Former SU players: Jerami Grant OKC 988TNP 32.65M 20.0P 7.7R 1.5A 1.1S 1.8B 7.6MFG 1.2MFT 1.2TO 3.9PF 18.2NP 11.2OE 7.0FG Dion Waiters MIA 364NP 25.9M 22.2P 4.9R 5.1A 1.2S 0.4B 11.8MFG 0.9MFT 2.7TO 3.0PF 15.4NP 9.5OE 5.9FG Michael Carter-Williams HOU 143TNP 13.3M 17.3P 9.0R 9.0A 2.6S 1.9B 9.9MFG 2.7MFT 2.6TO 6.2PF 18.4NP 4.7OE 13.7FG Carmelo Anthony (was playing for Houston) 85TNP 29.4M 21.9P 8.8R 0.8A 0.7S 1.1B 11.8MFG 1.1MFT 1.3TO 5.2PF 13.9NP 9.0OE 4.9FG Wesley Johnson NO/WAS 79TNP 14.1M 11.5P 6.5R 2.1A 1.3S 1.1B 7.5MFG 0.5MFT 1.6TO 5.7PF 7.1NP 3.7OE 3.4FG Tyler Lydon DEN 20TNP 3.8M 10.7P 9.1R 2.7A 1.1S 0.0B 4.8MFG 1.1MFT 2.1TO 5.3PF 11.2NP 4.8OE 6.4FG Malachi Richardson TOR 2TNP 4.7M 14.0P 6.1R 0.0A 0.5S 0.0B 9.3MFG 0.5MFT 3.7TO 6.1PF 1.0NP 4.2OE -3.2FG Comment: In the post-Melo period Syracuse University’s renowned basketball program has no NBA star to carry the flag for it. Jerami Grant is a “nice Piece”. Dion Waiters can cause some excitement. MCW seems to have resurrected a dormant career. Tyler Lydon and Malachi Richardson are marginal players. (What if they’d stay? – we’ll never know). Tyus Battle and, if he goes, Oshae Brissett will also likely be marginal players. The next SU to be an NBA start hasn’t arrived yet. I hope he’s bene born, at least.
