This year I will again be computing the top 25 NBA players in terms of total “Net Points”, (points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks – missed field goals – missed free throws- turnovers –fouls committed) and breaking down their stats per 48 minutes, (since that’s the length of an NBA game). I’ll also compute their “Offensive Efficiency”, (points minus missed field goals and free throws), and “Floor Game” (Net Points minus Offensive Efficiency). The players are ranked by total Net Points because a player with a superior rate who missed games had no impact on those games. A player with a less productive rate who played in those games did have an impact on them. I’ll also keep track of how former Syracuse players are doing. One difference from past years: instead of making monthly reports I decided to just do an end-of-the season summary. Many players were out due to the pandemic for certain games, as well as injuries and ‘load management’. But all teams played 72 games so I will continue to rank them by total net points: no matter what their rate of production was, their impact on the game they did not play was zero. I’m ranking the players based on the total statistical contribution they made to their teams. Glossary: TNP = Total net Points, M = minutes per game, Per 48 minutes: P = points, R = rebounds A= assists, S = steals, B = blocks, MFG = missed field goals, MFT = missed free throws, TO = turnovers, PF = personal fouls, NP = Net Points, OE = Offensive Efficiency, FG = Floor Game THE TOP 25 Nikola Jokić DEN Total: 2,393NP Per 48 minutes: 46.2NP 24.8OE 21.4FG 36.6M 36.6P 15.0R 11.6A 1.8S 0.9B (65.9+) 10.8MFG 1.0MFT 4.3TO 3.7PF (19.8- ) Giannis Antetokounmpo MIL Total: 1,858NP Per 48 minutes: 44.3NP 25.2OE 19.0FG 33.3M 40.9P 16.0R 8.5A 1.7S 1.7B (68.8+) 11.3MFG 4.4MFT 4.9TO 4.0PF (24.6- ) Nikola Vučević ORL/CHI Total: 1,820NP Per 48 minutes: 37.2NP 18.1OE 19.1FG 33.5M 33.5P 16.7R 5.5A 1.3S 1.0B (58.0+) 14.9MFG 0.5MFT 2.6TO 2.8PF (20.8- ) Luka Doncic DAL Total: 1,760NP Per 48 minutes: 37.4NP 21.2OE 16.2FG 33.5M 38.8P 11.2R 12.0A 1.4S 0.8B (64.2+) 14.9MFG 2.7MFT 6.0TO 3.2PF (26.8- ) Stephen Curry GSW Total: 1,736NP Per 48 minutes: 44.9NP 28.4OE 10.2FG 34.2M 44.9P 7.7R 8.1A 1.7S 0.2B (62.6+) 15.8MFG 0.7MFT 4.8TO 2.7PF (24.0- ) Russell Westbrook WAS Total: 1,732NP Per 48 minutes: 35.2NP 12.3OE 22.9FG 36.4M 29.3P 15.2R 15.5A 1.8S 0.5B (62.3+) 14.1MFG 2.9MFT 6.3TO 3.8PF (27.1- ) Damian Lillard POR Total: 1,723NP Per 48 minutes: 34.4NP 23.2OE 11.2FG 36.8M 38.6P 5.7R 10.1A 1.2S 0.3B (55.9+) 14.7MFG 0.7MFT 4.1TO 2.0PF (21.5- ) Rudy Gobert UTA Total: 1,684NP Per 48 minutes: 37.4NP 15.2OE 22.2FG 30.8M 22.5P 21.3R 2.0A 0.9S 4.2B (50.9+) 4.2MFG 3.1MFT 2.6TO 3.6PF (13.5- ) Julius Randle NYK Total: 1,679NP Per 48 minutes: 30.4NP 16.4OE 14.0FG 37.6M 30.8P 13.1R 7.7A 1.2S 0.3B (53.1+) 12.9MFG 1.5MFT 4.3TO 4.0PF (22.7- ) Domantas Sabonis IND Total: 1,602NP Per 48 minutes: 34.4NP 16.2OE 18.2FG 36.0M 27.1P 16.0R 8.9A 1.6S 0.7B (54.3+) 9.0MFG 1.9MFT 4.6TO 4.4PF (19.9- ) Zion Williamson NOP Total: 1,545NP Per 48 minutes: 36.6NP 25.7OE 10.9FG 33.2M 39.0P 10.4R 5.4A 1.4S 0.9B (57.1+) 9.5MFG 3.8MFT 4.0TO 3.2PF (20.5- ) Ben Adebayo MIA Total: 1,518NP Per 48 minutes: 34.2NP 26.8OE 12.8FG 33.5M 26.8P 12.8R 7.7A 1.7S 1.5B (50.5+) 7.7MFG 1.6MFT 3.8TO 3.2PF (16.3- ) Jason Tatum BOS Total: 1,495NP Per 48 minutes: 31.3NP 19.7OE 11.7FG 35.8M 35.5P 9.9R 5.8A 1.6S 0.6B (53.4+) 14.9MFG 0.9MFT 3.6TO 2.6PF (22.0- ) Clint Capela ATL Total: 1,484NP Per 48 minutes: 37.5NP 14.6OE 22.9FG 37.6M 30.8P 13.1R 7.7A 1.2S 0.3B (53.1+) 12.9MFG 1.5MFT 4.3TO 4.0PF (22.7- ) Joel Embiid PHI Total: 1,457NP Per 48 minutes: 44.1NP 28.3OE 15.8FG 31.1M 43.9P 16.3R 4.4A 1.5S 2.1B (68.2+) 13.3MFG 2.3MFT 4.8TO 3.7PF (24.1- ) Trae Young ATL Total: 1,439NP Per 48 minutes: 32.5NP 20.5OE 12.0FG 33.7M 36.0P 5.5R 13.4A 1.2S 0.3B (56.4+) 14.1MFG 1.4MFT 5.9TO 2.5PF (23.9- ) Bradley Beal WAS Total: 1,427NP Per 48 minutes: 31.9NP 25.0OE 6.9FG 35.8M 42.0P 6.3R 13.6A 1.5S 0.5B (56.2+) 15.9MFG 1.1MFT 4.2TO 3.1PF (24.3- ) Chris Paul PHO Total: 1,427NP Per 48 minutes: 31.2NP 15.2OE 16.0FG 31.4M 25.1P 6.8R 13.6A 2.2S 0.4B (48.1+) 9.6MFG 0.3MFT 3.9TO 3.6PF (16.9- ) Jonas Valančiūnas MEM Total: 1,410NP Per 48 minutes: 38.6NP 19.3OE 19.3FG 28.3M 28.9P 21.2R 3.1A 1.0S 1.6B (55.8+) 8.3MFG 1.3MFT 2.7TO 4.9PF (17.2- ) Jimmy Butler MIA Total: 1,363NP Per 48 minutes: 37.5NP 18.9OE 18.6FG 33.6M 30.7P 9.9R 10.2A 3.0S 0.5B (54.3+) 10.2MFG 1.6MFT 3.0TO 2.0PF (16.8- ) DeAndre Ayton PHO Total: 1,349NP Per 48 minutes: 30.6NP 15.9OE 14.7FG 30.7M 22.6P 16.5R 2.2A 0.9S 1.8B (44.0+) 5.8MFG 0.9MFT 2.3TO 4.4PF (13.4- ) Kawhi Leonard LAC Total: 1,336NP Per 48 minutes: 36.3NP 22.1OE 14.2FG 34.1M 35.0P 9.1R 7.3A 2.2S 0.6B (54.2+) 12.0MFG 0.9MFT 2.8TO 2.2PF (17.9- ) Kyrie Irving BRK Total: 1,321NP Per 48 minutes: 33.4NP 22.8OE 10.6FG 34.9M 36.9P 6.50R 8.2A 1.9S 0.9B (54.4+) 13.7MFG 0.4MFT 3.3TO 3.6PF (21.0- ) Khris Middleton MIL Total: 1,319NP Per 48 minutes: 27.8NP 16.8OE 15.4FG 33.4M 29.2P 8.6R 7.8A 1.6S 0.2B (47.4+) 11.9MFG 0.5MFT 3.8TO 3.4PF (27.8- ) DeMar DeRozan SAS Total: 1,303NP Per 48 minutes: 30.3NP 18.6OE 11.7FG 33.7M 30.7P 6.0R 9.8A 1.3S 0.4B (48.2+) 10.9MFG 1.2MFT 2.8TO 3.0PF (17.9- ) Comments: The top four players in the NBA are a Serb, A Greek, (of Nigerian parents), a Montenegrin born in Switzerland and a Slovene. It’s a fully international sport. An awful lot of the players in top 25 were centers, (Jokic, Vučević, Gobert, Adebayo, Capela, Embiid, Ayton, Valančiūnas), suggesting a comeback in the importance of the big men in the game. Some players who would normally be among the top guys are not on the list due to limited games, (LeBron James averaged 37.60 but played just 52 game, James Hardin was a at 38.2 over 44 games and Karl Anthony Towns was 35.5 in 50 game) FORMER SYRACUSE PLAYERS Jerami Grant DET Total: 881NP Per 48 minutes: 23.2NP 16.2OE 7.0FG 33.8M 31.6P 6.6R 4.0A 0.9S 1.5B (44.8+) 14.0MFG 1.4MFT 2.9TO 3.3PF (21.6- ) Carmelo Anthony POR Total: 754NP Per 48 minutes: 21.5NP 15.8OE 5.7FG 24.5M 26.2P 6.1R 3.0A 1.3S 1.1B (37.7+) 9.9MFG 0.5MFT 1.7TO 4.1PF (16.2- ) Oshae Brissett IND Total: 266NP Per 48 minutes: 24.6NP 12.6OE 12.0FG 24.7M 21.2P 10.6R 1.7A 1.8S 1.8B (37.1+) 7.2MFG 1.4MFT 0.9TO 3.0PF (12.5- ) Michael Carter-Williams ORL Total: 238NP Per 48 minutes: 14.1NP 4.6OE 9.5FG 25.8M 16.4P 8.3R 7.7A 1.5S 1.0B (34.9+) 9.9MFG 1.9MFT 4.1TO 4.9PF (20.8- ) Elijah Hughes UTA Total: 20NP Per 48 minutes: 15.1NP 8.2OE 6.9FG 3.6M 23.3P 6.8R 4.5A 0.1S 0.1B (34.8+) 15.0MFG 0.1MFT 4.5TO 0.1PF (19.7- ) Comment: Who is the next ex-Orangeman to crack the Top 25? Jerami Grant’s numbers resemble DeMar DeRozan’s except for the assists and missed shots. He also only played in 54 games. Jerami’s field goal shooting percentages declined from .478 to .429 overall, .537-.473 on two pointers and .389-.350 for threes: He’s getting more defensive attention now that he’s the #1 guy. I assume that what we are seeing from Carmelo is the most we will see at this point in his career. Oshae Brissett actually has the highest NPper40 of any of our guys but that’s in just 21 games. He’s shooting better than Jerami at .483/.548/.423 but he’s also the 7th leading scorer on his team, which, incredibly, had four guys average 20ppg, (Victor Oladipo only played 9 games). So he’s not getting the defensive attention that Jerami is now facing. MCW was a rookie of the year but he’s not turned out to be a top 25 type of player. I don’t think he was ever better than he was in his debut game when he had 22p 7r 12a 9s vs. the two-time defending NBA champion Miami Heat. I thought Elijah Hughes had some potential and maybe he does but he’s a marginal NBA player right now.
