Here is my annual listing of the top NBA Players as measured by “Net Points”: Points + Rebounds + Assists + Steals + Blocks minus Missed Field Goals + Missed Free Throws + Turnovers + Personal Fouls. I’ve always ranked the players by their gross totals, rather than their averages. I figure a player with a greater rate of production still has a value of zero in the games he doesn’t play. Also, we don’t know if he would have retained quite that rate if he’d played in more games and the player with the lower rate who played in more games might have had a stretch where he had a comparable rate over the same number of games as the other fellow. But now we have this concept of ‘load maintenance’ and the games’ top stars are playing fewer games than they historically have so the gross total top 25 will be different than the per 48 minute rate. But I’ll still go with the gross totals because that’s how I’ve done it in prior years. A player’s value in games he doesn’t play is zero and we don’t know if he would have retained his rate of production in individual games. I’ll also show the per 48 minutes rate for the Net Points and for each individual stat. “NP is “Net Points”. OE is “Offensive Efficiency”: points minute missed field goals and free throws. ‘FG” is “Floor Game”, (NP-OE). I’ve put the best number for the Top 25 in bold.

Last year’s numbers: NBA Net Points, 2022-23

But the highest NP/48 in the league was Joel Embid of Philadelphia:
1,398NP 33.6m 49.6p 15.8r 8.0a 1.7s 2.4b – 14.7mfg 1.9mft 5.5to 4.1pf = 51.3NP 33.0OE!! 18.3FG
But Joel’s value in the 43 games he missed was zero.

I’ve heard a lot of hyperbole recently about these guys. Anthony Edwards is “the next Michael Jordan”. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was ‘snubbed’ for MVP. Victor Wembanyama and Chet Holmgren are “generational players” who will “reinvent the game”. Maybe. But for now Nikola Jokić has the numbers and he has three straight MVPs.

NBA Net Points Champions

The NBA was created for the 1949-50 season from a merger of the National Basketball League and the Basketball Association of America. The elements of the “Net Points” formula are points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, missed field goals, missed free throws, turnovers and fouls committed. In that first season, the league only kept track of points, assists, field goal and free throw attempts and makes and fouls committed. Rebounds were added the next year, then minutes in 1951-52, steals and blocks in 1973-74 and turnovers in 1977-78. I’ve included those numbers as they were available. For simplicity, I’ll designate the season by the second year, since the majority of the season is played then.
