Sort of surprising for me to hear since the job of the union is to serve its current (and not future) constituents. One would think raising the age limit requirement would benefit players already in the NBA as it reduces competition for their jobs. But perhaps they view exactly the opposite way. Allowing immature 18 year olds as job competition makes it easier for veterans to hold on to their positions?

Adam silver wants a 2 year min for college. The NBAPA "wants" no min for college.

Perfect setup for a simple compromise of 1 year min for college.

Allows great players to get to FA a year earlier. Makes mo impact on veterans. One vet will be replaced for every 1st round pick anyway. It will hurt the late 1st round picks who get pushed into the 2nd round, and the late 2nd rounders who will be FAs

This would probably be better for college basketball, allowing the elite HS kid to just go straight to the league.in my eyes, You would see most kids in college be there for 2+ years and actually develop, and you would be able to watch promising freshman grow for a few years before jumping. I think there would be very few 1 and dones in college again.

Of course I could be completely wrong and it leads to worse college basketball.

The new NBAPA chief is a tough cookie. She made an arrogant statement about the media but I have no problem with the one and done rule going away.
Let the kids go out of HS it would make them play in the D-league instead of developing in college.

Smart move. If more teams use the D League like a minor league that means more bench jobs for veterans, and for those good enough to make the jump right away, it gets them to that next deal sooner.

Baseball does it and no one seems to mind.

They dont have to wait. They can go pro right from high school (if subject to the draft..if they are international and not subject to the draft they can actually go pro earlier). There is nothing preventing them from being in the big leagues at 18 or 19 or 20, other than skill.

The basic categories of players eligible to be drafted are:
  • High school players, if they have graduated from high school and have not yet attended college or junior college;
  • College players, from four-year colleges who have either completed their junior or senior years or are at least 21 years old; and
  • Junior college players, regardless of how many years of school they have completed

It didn't answer my question, and there are tons of loopholes in baseball that a) let you go early and b) let you not sign and go back into the draft. Think the NBA would do that.

Let them go out of high school if they want, but if you go to college you have to stay for three years. That's a compromise. There are very few players who could play right out of HS. If you're serious about school you can prove it.

I don't understand how that could be legal or enforced. Indentured servitude for three years when the schools could push you out the door at any time and coaches can come and go as they please?

I say let them go whenever they want. If they think they're the next LeBron/Kobe and can make an impact straight from high school then go for it. They're the ones who gotta face the consequences when they turn into the next Sebastian Telfair and find themselves out of the league at 22.

How do you recruit HS players? Is he going pro or not? When does he have to declare? End of junior year? If not what if yo recruit players who at last minute want to go pro or want to go pro in the middle oof season and were a draft pick of a team that gets him if he comes out of college in x years. We are going to have many SU like teams that all of a sudden players never come because they changed their mind and went pro

It's like recruiting an Anthony Davis who signs a loi in October of his junior year and so you don't recruit someone else then in his junior senior year he blows up and wants to play pro. A pro team drafts him while he hasn't finished HS cause he puts his name into the draft prior to graduating. So we have pro players making
millions without even getting a high school diploma,

You don realize that until 2004 that's exactly how this worked right? Lebron was the last HS player to jump straight to the pros, same draft class as Melo.

I'd rather have 0 and done than one or two and done.

Having them stay two to three years screws a kid like Ennis big time and while I'm a Syracuse fan, that does not seem right.

Actually that would be 2005. Martell Webster, Gerald Green, and Andrew Bynum were HS first round picks. A ton of HSers went in the 2nd round though, and all but Ricky Sanchez had respectable NBA careers. In fact the only HS players not in the league from that draft are Bynum, Sanchez, and Blatche.

Like we aren't witnessing mediocre college basketball right now? While some superstars will turn pro, having a more consistent roster would improve the quality of play, which would make it more enjoyable.

Think about the threads of people's favorite SU player- there's an awful lot of 4 yr guys included, even if they weren't the most talented.

I donb't think the age limit has an effect on jobs, right? The same # of players are getting drafted either way.

Also, all of this stuff is negotiating and posturing. They have a new head of the players association and the league wants 2, they can say they want 0 and compromise on 2. Or even concede to give them 2 and try to take something else in another part of the negotiations. etc

1. The baseball model only works because they have a real minor league system that develops players.

2. The NBA should develop a one or two tiered minor league system... but I think the NBA likes to have the NCAA market / develop the kids, and the NCAA is fine with it as well as it benefits them.

3. As for the players wanting it dropped -- its merely posturing on their part. They know it's what Silver wants, so by widening the gap, they can get more of something else they really desire.

4. I think the 2 year rule is the best solution, with an NBA board selecting up to 2 players annually for early entry out of high school. Works better for both the NBA and NCAA

5. Ironically in this age of early entry, while the quality of NCAA basketball is suffering, the quality of NBA Basketball may be at its highest level in 10 years.
