Another successful conquest of a road arena in basketball really has me asking, no begging, that Coach Marrone gets his players in place, gets his offense in place, calls the plays himself instead of using a middleman (if we won't spend the money on a proven OC), and just lets his ponies run. The passion for Syracuse is still out there, but non-die hards need something entertaining to root for. Come on DOUG!!! Enough with allowing insecurities to dictate your gameplan. Take it the opposition... build it and they will come... and perhaps... EVEN TRAVEL!!!

Keeping with the football thread concerning the hoops game, pre-game I went down and stood courtside, convincing the arena security I was Jerry McNamara's cousin (seriously, that worked) and I had a seat behind the bench. Anyway, all Syracuse geared up and eating my strawberry ice cream, I walked over to the NCSt football team section who attended the game and asked a couple guys about EJ Carter. They told me he was a really good player and guy, not the biggest guy but probably the biggest hitter on the team. However, he couldn't keep his grades and flunked off the team.

I love this post because it encapsulates the fundamental and wide spread misunderstanding of why teams win and lose in college sports.

It's not the OC for gosh sakes. It's not the play calling. It's the players.
Marrone needs what Boeheim has - the best recruits in the nation.

Get Marrone a group of top 20-50 players at every position and on the bench and Kyle Fetterly can call the plays.

Here is a question, is it easier to compete in football or basketball with less talented players?

The answer is the same. It is not easy to compete in either sport with less talented players.

Jim Boeheim is in a great place right now. He has many, many talented players - some of the best players to come out of HS over the past few years.

Look at Indiana University BB experience since the program was destroyed by Kelvin Sampson.

For three years with a great coach Tom Creen, the team has struggled. Not because of coaching, but because of a striking lack of talent.

Now, with Cody Zeller, a great freshman center, the Hoosiers are 10-0.

In BB, as is evidenced by the IU experience, it is easier to get better faster in BB because one or two players can have immediate, significant impact.

In football it obviously requires many impact players to change a program.

It's a good thing the security guard didn't ask you to spell Gerry. You may have been flagged...

With a due respect, Boeheim built his reputation on winning without McD AAs. It's only been recently that we have been reeling these kids in.

The program was built in the 80's with AA's.

We became a 'middling team' with Bernie fine handling the recruiting.

The flaw in the talent argument as in relation to SU football is the fact that there are many teams that have less talent than SU but consistently perform as well and inc many cases better than we do on the field.

Time to recognize that in terms of football, we are not elite and not even near elite. We need to be like a mid-major in basketball where coaching staffs actual "coach up" the talent to play at a power conference level.

Dreaming that SU will have Top 25 recruiting classes consistently in football someday is delusional.

Cheers,
Neil

I have to disagree with you Omni. First we are going to the ACC, where we belong, we wont discuss Penn State and 30 years past, different story. We have the right coach, we focus on what we do have and that is an excellent University. First Academically. If we begin establishing recruiting foothold where we consistently are able to redshirt some of these guys and utilize the dome as a weapon we will begin to see more impact student athketes. Syracuse University is such a fun place, I tell you. We need support from the fans, there should be 45 k minimum for every home game easily. I speak to all of my friends in Rochester, Utica, Watertown, Binghamton, Syracuse and all surrounding areas. This is our team. We do need to be the 2nd option for talent in PA, and NJ. We used to be in the early 90's. Great school, stay positive folks.

I will admit the caliber of our recruits has improved lately, but we only landed a total of 6 AAs in the entire decade of the 1980s. Only 3 in the 1990s. Boeheim's reputation was built on coaching-up less heralded recruits.

I disagree. If the right things were to fall in place, SU could have routine Top 25 type recruiting classes.

Perhaps classes in the Top 40-30 range (which will take a decade or so more of winning which isn't likely to happen in the ACC if we can't win now in the Big East), but it's a pipedream to think our football classes will ever consistently be in the Top 25, imho.

Cheers,
Neil
