"He's not lying about that," Mahoney said. "If you're willing to put your body on the line and win some games, he'll reward you."

But under a new set of eyes evaluating him, he'll have to do so once again.

"If I'm thinking about a scholarship, I'm probably not thinking about what I need to do on the field," Mahoney said. "For me, it's more if I can compete on the field and show what I can do on the field, the scholarship will just naturally come."
