I know the county has an rfp out for a new hotel next to the Everson. They want at least 200 rooms. This one would replace the Crown Plaza. https://www.syracuse.com/news/2024/06/onondaga-county-to-seek-developer-to-build-a-hotel-next-to-the-everson-museum.html?outputType=amp Hart’s redevelopment of Great Northern Mall includes plans for 7 hotels. That might be a little ambitious but with all the development coming to Clay and Route 31, I think at least one major hotel will be built in the area. A big question to me is whether a hotel is built to replace the Sheraton near SU. SU alone generates a lot of demand for hotel rooms. With AC and individual seating, SU is primed to host far more concerts and other events (monster trucks, etc). Pretty sure Sheraton made a lot of money and they or someone else would like another shot at this. Pretty sure SU is feeling a lot of heat from alums, businesses it works with, etc. now that the hotel is gone. I think it is inevitable that a major hotel is built close to SU and expect it to happen in the next 5 years. There is no question this is a tough time to build. Interest rates are really high. Construction costs are really high. The county understands this and is trying to work with developers. They have an initiative seeded with $8 million to encourage hotel development. http://ongov.net/cd/hotel-initiative.html Hopefully interest rates drop, construction costs become more reasonable and demand for hotel rooms shows strong growth in the next few years. I believe all this will happen.
