The point is, she will be the same player as a pro and her salary will be lower. If it was only about the player, that wouldn't be the case.

Her salary will technically be higher. It’s zero right now. She is making endorsement money and will make endorsement money as a pro. It’s more than a semantic difference.

If that endorsement money is lower as a pro, that’s more an indictment of the WNBA than anything else.

In her case, at least, it is only about the player. Iowa doesn’t have much of a role in it other than being the school she happened to pick. She’d be making this money regardless of which school she attended.

The rest would be forgotten because there's no emotional connection to a minor league pro team, and if you're watching pros you're not wasting your time watching lower levels when the highest level is available.

The highest level is only “available” in a relatively small number of large metropolitan areas. If you’re in Syracuse you’d have to drive 2-1/2 hours to see the Bills or Sabres; 3-1/2 hours to see the Blue Jays or Maple Leafs; 4 hours to see the Sixers, Phillies, Eagles, Flyers, Yankees, Mets etc.

You might want to do that, but would the government go along with it? Especially if it remains structured as is, with the universities continuing to operate the athletic programs? It feels like the only way to do it while skirting Title IX is to create separate entities outside of the universities that actually operate the revenue sports, which essentially requires turning the entire collegiate athletics model on its head.

Is that why the Syracuse Mets draw such huge crowds and can demand such high prices for tickets? How many lower level pro football leagues have folded despite having teams in areas lacking a major team to root for? How are the crowds at g-league games? What about TV deals for minor league teams?

People don't care about minor league pro sports, even when they have guys playing in them that were popular in college. How many of our fans are going out of their way to catch a game with Buddy in it? We have people that live on the other side of the country that will do all they can to get back to Syracuse to catch a game. Others plan for multiple away football games every year. College isn't simply a substitute for areas lacking a major league team. There is a built in connection.

The relationship between player and college is symbiotic. They both benefit from the other. People that try to claim it's only schools that benefit from the popularity of the players are not being objective.

At this point, I suppose I am. That would allow for some sort of salary cap and control over player movement to provide some sort of stability. Let's also stop pretending the colleges are not for profit and that the athletes aren't already pros.

Really, I think there's too much money involved all around and it's ruined it. But I concede there's no going back.

It might be how the rest of the world operates but I'm not sure it would be successful here. We're really the only country in the world that has major college athletics so ingrained in our culture. If you flip that on its head, I honestly don't know how it would be received in the long term.
