Teams from 1980 onward and one per team.
Is the 03 team our best team ever?
Or most successful?
I think the 1989 team was our best team if I were honest.

4 seed isn’t bad for the 03 team though.

BB-Ref says 87-88 over 88-89 by a hair with the simple rating system. My eye test is 09-10 was the best team til AO's injury.
Or 2012. I have been around for all of them. Well, since the early 70's anyway. the 2010 vs 2012 game would be the best.

I have a hard time seeing the data not backing up the 09-10 team as the best ever. 1-7, impossible to top.

They just smashed top-10 teams right out of the gate. They crushed #13 Cal and #6 UNC in one weekend at about the same margin that Duke just spanked Syracuse, and then #10 Florida three weeks later.

7 starters and a perfect combination of personnel. A beautiful team to watch.

08 Davidson you say?

Steph Curry against the zone. gulp.

IMO it shoulda been 1985 onwards (64+ team fields). You have to allow schools with titles into the field. So...

Baylor 21
UVA 19

Nova 85, 16, 18
UNC 93, 05, 09, 17
Duke 91, 92, 01, 10, 15
UConn 99, 04, 11, 14
Louisville 86, 13
UK 96, 98, 12
KU 88, 08
Florida 06, 07
SU 03
MD 02
Michigan State 00
Zona 97
UCLA 95
Arkansas 94
UNLV 90
Michigan 89
Indiana 87

I would then go by Final Fours...

Gonzaga 17, 20
Houston 20
UCLA 06, 07, 08, 20
Auburn 19
Michigan State 99, 01, 05, 09, 10, 15, 19
Texas Tech 19
Michigan 92, 93, 13, 18
KU 86, 91, 93, 02, 03, 12, 18
Loyola Chicago 18
South Carolina 17
Oregon 17

SU 87, 96, 13, 16
UNC 91, 95, 97, 98, 00, 08, 16
Oklahoma 88, 02, 16
Wisconsin 00, 14, 15
UK 93, 97, 11, 14, 15
Florida 94, 00, 14
Wichita State 13
Louisville 05, 12
Ohio State 99, 07, 12
VCU 11
Butler 10, 11
West Virgina 10
Nova 09
UConn 09
Memphis 85, 08
Georgetown 85, 07
LSU 86, 06
George Mason 06
Illinois 89, 05
Okie State 95, 04
Duke 86, 88, 89, 90, 94, 99, 04
GA Tech 90, 04
Texas 03
Marquette 03

Indiana 92, 02
Maryland 01
Zona 88, 94, 01
Utah 98
Stanford 98
Minny 97
UMass 96
Miss State 96

Arkansas 90, 95
Cincy 92
UNLV 87, 91
Seton Hall 89
PC 87
St Johns 85

Those are the eligible teams. So for SU the choices are 03, 87, 96, 13, 16.

By current conference...

B1G 8
Big East 8
SEC 7
B12 7
ACC 6
P12 5
AAC 4
A10 3
MVC 1
MWC 1
WCC 1

That gives you 40 at large bids, but only 36 are available. So there is a 1st four out from the worst 4 of those Final Four teams. The other 21 conference auto bids I am not taking the time to pick.

From what the guy had I wouldn't include the below. Can't get an at large IMO if you don't even make a Final Four.

Dayton 20
Davidson 08
Temple 88
St Joes 04
San Diego State 11
Houston 83 (pre 1985)
Purdue 94
Richmond 88
UNC 82 (pre 1985)
Rhode Island 98
Wake 95
NC State 83 (pre 1985)
Georgetown 84 (pre 1985)
Mizzou 02
Iowa State 00
DePaul 80 (pre 1985)
BYU 11
Xavier 04
BC 94
At least one of Navy 86 or Lehigh 12 (one can be Patriot League rep). Edit you have to pick Navy over Lehigh here. They made an Elite 8.

My pick for SU would be 1987. I think they were the better team. Both came down to the last play in the NCG. One lost on a made bucket while the other blocked the shot. It is very close though.

BTW how insane was that run by Duke from 1986-1994? They made 7 Final Fours over that 9 year stretch. For comparison they have made 5 in the 26 seasons since then.

Sorry, but when I saw FGCU in there with a chance to be called the greatest of all time, I stopped reading.
