Senior Martin Hehir will compete for a national championship on Saturday in the 3000-meter run.

The Washingtonville, N.Y. native qualified for the event with a time of 7:53.15 at the ACC Championships a day after he won gold in the 5k. His performance at the meet earned him ACC meet MVP – a first for Syracuse as a program.

Hehir is seeded 10th-of-16 qualifiers in the event, which will take place in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

This is Hehir's first trip to indoor nationals, after taking 21st in the 10k at the NCAA Outdoor Championships last season.

The senior will have to wait to get his race underway as the 3000-meters is the second-to-last event of the Championships. The race is scheduled to get underway at 8:15 p.m. on Saturday, with a live stream being available through ESPN3.

Hehir's race is 8:15 Central. Nice of SU to note that in case anyone wanted to watch. He's also seeded 15th, but a lot of the guys ahead of him will be running other events this weekend. Hopefully he can land in the top 8 and get All-American.

7th place finish for Hehir. 1st Team All-American. Well Done Martin!

Hehir Takes 7th at NCAA Championships
Martin Hehir finished seventh in the 3000-meters for the Orange

Senior Martin Hehir took seventh in the 3000-meters at the NCAA Indoor Championships in what was the best finish for a member of the Orange in three years at the event.

Hehir finished the event in 8:03.38, just over four seconds off the pace of Champion Eric Jenkins. The Washingtonville, N.Y. native turned in the best performance since Jarret Eaton's national championship in the 60-meter hurdles in 2012.

The run capped off a stellar indoor season for Hehir, who took home ACC Indoor Championship MVP honors – a first for a member of the Orange -- after winning the 5k and qualifying for the national meet during a second-place finish in the 3000-meters.

Saturday's performance was the latest success for Hehir this year after he was previously named ACC Cross Country Performer of the Year after winning the ACC title in cross country and earned USTFCCCA All-America honors later in the fall. He also earned ACC Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

The Orange will begin its outdoor season on April 3, when the members of the team will compete in three separate meets, the Princeton Sam Howell Invitational, the Stanford Invitational and the Auburn Tiger Classic.
