Bought my daughter Broadway tickets for Xmas. Wife is going with her. She has never driven in NYC, and doesn't want to start. Train and plane are unreasonably expensive. Are there park and rides that would be safe to leave car overnight? Coming in from Syracuse. Prefer a train, but buses okay. Do buses go to Port Authority? My thought is Bayonne then Path, but there are probably better options. Thanks in advance.

Day of week and time of play? It makes a difference. Give me those two things and I'll give you some options.

Saturday. The will likely leave early, shop on city. Play at 8 leave Sunday AM

This might be an odd suggestion, but I have done this many times from Princeton.

The Princeton Jct train station has great and relatively inexpensive parking. The train takes 45 minutes or so to Penn Station. There's a lot of good hotels there and they seem to always have good packages.

It's geographically farther ... but more driveable.

Before I moved to the city, I would park at a Metro north station and ride the train in. Works easy and usually an easy schedule to work with. Plus it'll drop you off a short distance from the theater district at Grand Central.

I recommend a bus to Port Authority. Great location and the buses come pretty often. However, I also advise that they leave early on Saturday. Traffic can be pretty bad and it's better if they are waiting around in the city then hurrying to get to the show ontime. What are they seeing?

I would check with the ferry services. The Port Imperial Ferry has a very large parking lot. I used to live next door to it. It is a very safe area. And after you ferry into NYC they have shuttle busses that go all around for free to get you to your destination. http://www.nywaterway.com/CustomerService.aspx
The problem is with the overnight. A lot of the train and bus lots only have metered parking for non residents. Especially the metro north lots. Thus overnight would not work. There is a bus lot in Parsipanny, NJ at Rt. 46 and N. Beverwyck Rd. That lot used to be for anyone to park in. I am pretty sure you can park overnight. We used to use that lot for our commute. Also in a good area. Any lot will have some risks. As there will not be many cars in it overnight. I would call the local police in Parsipanny, NJ and ask about that lot. Also check that the bus will be running on Xmas if they need that day. That bus co. is Lakeland http://www.lakelandbus.com/Daily.html

Hey this one is easy. Go to the secaucus train station. Safe and a short 8 min train ride. Vista 4 each way and parking will be like 20 for 24 hours. Only issue is last train out of NY Penn is 130 am.

The metro north idea sounds pretty good in my opinion. Don't take the bus if they are coming from Syracuse, that is the longest trip ever! My option for you is to drive to the Newport area of jersey city, they have public parking lot at the Newport mall, from there take the path train into 33 and broadway. It's an easy trip from syracuse, take 81 south to 380, 380 to 80, 80 to 280, then 280 to holland tunnel, follow signs for Newport mall

this is the best so far! Forgot about secaucus!

yes to Secaucus. Once again check with NJ Transit or Secaucus police about overnight parking.

If you are considering Metro North there is a Metro North station in Tarrytown about a mile from the Tappan Zee bridge. About a 35-45 minute train ride. Parking is available but I don' t how much on weekends. Another option is a Metro North from Hastings On Hudson (where I live)- 5 miles south of Tappan Zee on Route 9. 30-40 minute train ride. In Hastings parking across from the train station is free on Saturdays and Sundays for residents and non-residents. All Metro North trains go into Grand Central Station (42nd and Lexington.) Train tickets can be purchased in machine at stations. The only problem with Hastings is that on weekends most of the trains are only once an hour. Here is the link for the train schedule:

81 to 17 to 287 and then back onto 17 (Standard way of getting to NYC from Syracuse). With no stopping, no traffic and good weather, it should take about 3.5 hours from 'Cuse to train station.

Once back on 17 in New Jersey, look for Spring Street exit.

Train station is right next to 17. Train station has multi-story parking garage.
Name of Station is Ramsey Route 17. It is on Main-Bergen Line.

Take train to Secaucus and then switch to train to NYC (VERY EASY to do)...

On way home, do the opposite.

www.njtransit.com is web site to get train schedules...Ramsey Route 17 to Penn Station is the one you want to look at. Penn Station is 34th and 8th in NYC.

Hastings Cuse? Nice -- I just moved to Dobbs.

The problem with Secaucus is that getting to the train station is confusing and, since it is right outside the Lincoln Tunnel, there is lots of traffic (something I'm assuming they want to avoid since they don't want to drive in NYC).

Getting to exit 15X on the turnpike is easy but after that it is easy to make the wrong turn.

Also, you need to check if you can leave car overnight in lot.
