Needed: Social Media indicators for old guys

some folks here consider certain things to be telling, and of seemingly varying degrees of potential significance.
Coming from someone who hasn’t really ventured outside of Facebook and LinkedIn (and I have a person for that), and very little X, can you tell me why following, unfollowing, etc. seem to carry so much meaning.
I might look at at a post and suddenly I am following someone when that wasn’t my intent.
Help me get into the 21st century. Thanks.

"Following" someone is socially acceptable internet stalking.

"Unfollowing" can lead to unacceptable non-internet stalking. Wanna see a "friend's" dark side? Unfollow them. I dare you.
