This year I’m including net points information with my post game updates but doing monthly posts breaking the information out so we can chart the trends.

Again the formula is to add the “positives”, (points rebounds, assists, blocks and steals) and subtract the “negatives”, (missed field goals, missed free throws, turnovers and fouls) on the theory that all these numbers are, on average worth between 0.5 and 1.5 points and you can summarize a player’s statistical contributions to his team by adding the positives and subtracting the negatives. Of course, there are things not covered by the stats, (getting loose balls- which should be a stat- sneaker to sneaker defense, keeping the ball moving, providing an outlet man for a player surrounded by defenders, the timeliness of things, being a an example and leader off the court, etc), But the most statistically productive players will normally be the best at these other things as well.

In my post game summaries, I’m totaling the net points and multiplying by 40, then dividing by the number of minutes played on the season. I’m adding my numbers up as I go along. In these monthly posts, I’ll multiply each stat by 40/minutes played and then adding and subtracting the result so the numbers might be slightly different due to rounding. I’m also adding two other stats: “Offensive Efficiency“ (OE), which is points minus missed field goals and free throws, and “Floor Game“ (FG), which is rebounds, assists, blocks and steals minus turnovers and fouls. When I do the monthly post, I’ll also review the numbers on the latest game summary vs. the overall numbers on the SU Athletics website to correct any mistakes. Finally I’ve decided to list the best seasons of our most famous players since the 1983-84, (the earliest year for which all the numerical components of the net points formula are available), for comparison purposes. Of course, as we go along, the numbers of the current SU players will become more meaningful as we have a greater sample vs. better opposition.

M= minutes per game the team has played, (If players get injured or suspended, I will use the number of games for which they were available)
P= points per 40 minutes.
R= rebounds per 40 minutes
A= assists per 40 minutes
B= blocks per 40 minutes
S= steals per 40 minutes
+= total of P+R+A+B+S
MFG= missed field goals per 40 minutes
MFT= missed free throws per 40 minutes
TO= turnovers per 40 minutes
PF= personal fouls per 40 minutes
- = total of MFG+MFT+TO+PF
NP= + minus -
OE= P minus MFG+MFT
FG= R+A+S+B minus TO+PF
(This is through the end of the season. Previous numbers were through the Eastern Michigan game of 11/29/11, the DePaul game of 1/1/12 and the West Virginia game of 1/28/12 and the Connecticut game of 2/25/12)

Comment: Both Rakeem and Baye showed they can be good college centers from their play in the tournament. People forget that Rak was a highly rated recruit in his own right. I remember when he verballed to Syracuse that the news reports heralded him as the #1 center recruit in the country. He wasn’t that but he’ll be a good player for us. How will these two and DuJuan Coleman- or Nerlens Noel- fit in with these guys? That will be figured out next year.

Comment: Both Kris Joseph and CJ Fair saw significant declines in their numbers after March, (which is hard to do at that point in the season. With Kris is was declines in scoring and rebounding. With CJ it was mostly scoring. James Southerland’s productivity stayed about the same- on the surface. Actually, in March he performed to the net level of his red-shot start and his ice-cold conference season. What’s interesting is that the perception is that shooting is the primary part of his game but his “floor game” was equally important to his scoring, (8.9OE, 9.2FG). He has the highest NP per 40 of anyone on the team. Does that make him our best player. Not necessarily, but per 40 minutes he scored 17 points, grabbed 8 rebounds, and an assist, 2 steals and 2 blocks. If he did that in a game and somebody said that he was the bets player out there that night, you might agree.

Mookie Jones has left the program and played only 38 minutes this season- my cut off for numbers from past seasons is 100 minutes- so I’m not including his numbers.

Comments: The performances of Scoop Jardine and Brandon Triche declined in march, (Scoop had a great NCAA tournament but his slump before then more than cancelled his NCAA numbers out). Dion Waiters was about the same and Michael Carter-Williams didn’t play.

DOPPLEGANGERS

These comparisons to past players are partially based on the numbers and partially on the player. Some matches are hard to make and body-type or game type were considered along with the numbers. I just posted the best match I could find from the numbers on the SU Athletic website, which go back to 1983-84, the Pearl’s freshman year.

This is great stuff. I love the former player best years. It helps gauge how good they were for us. A couple of surprises to me we're Carmelo and Gmac. Would have thought both would have been higher, especially Gmac.

Seems like 20 is more or less when a player is reaching pro potential. I am still a little surprised rick didn't get more of a sniff. Perhaps his ncca performance scared off some people.

Also amazing is what Jason hart did in the pros with his low net points.

He didn't have a 6 foot jump shot, no right hand, undersized, and limited post moves (he did have a great reverse though). Great college player, but the fact he didn't get a sniff is pretty straight forward IMO.
