I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of the non-conference season, the ACC season and the post season. Net Points (points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls) Frank Howard 17NP in 39 minutes Buddy Boeheim 11NP in 35 minutes Oshae Brissett 8NP in 34 minutes Elijah Hughes 4NP in 40 minutes Bourama Sidibe 2NP in 14 minutes Marek Dolezaj 2NP in 24 minutes Paschal Chukwu -1NP in 7 minutes Jalen Carey -1NP in 7 minutes DNP coach’s decision Robert Braswell Injured Tyus Battle Out for the year Howard Washington Awards Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog) (Points plus assists) Frank Howard 28 points + 3 assists = 31 Shooting Efficiency (Points minus field goal and free throw attempts) Frank Howard 28 points – 9 mfg – 0 mft = +19 Scoring Efficiency (Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points) Buddy Boeheim 15 of 25 possible points = 60.0% Sat Us Down (Who scored the first SU basket of each half?) 1st Half- Frank Howard trey 35 seconds in 2nd Half- Oshae Brissett lay-up 1:23 in TACO Bell MVP (Who scored the point that got us to 70, which gets you free tacos with your ticket stub) Frank Howard with a trey with 14 seconds left. My Man (Who played the most minutes?) Elijah Hughes 40 minutes TEAM STATS Possession Rebounding (Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that) We rebounded 9 of our 34 misses = 26.7% They rebounded 13 of their 31 misses = 41.9% Effective Offensive Rebounding (Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds) We got 5 points on 9 O-Rebs = 0.556 points/O-reb They got 17 points on 13 O-Rebs = 1.308 points/O-reb Unforced Turnovers (Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers) We had 17 turnovers – 14 steals = 3 unforced They had 18 turnovers – 8 steals = 10 unforced Points per Takeaway (Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had) We had 20 points from 18 takeaways = 1.111 points/takeaway They had 27 points from 17 takeaways = 1.588 points/takeaway Unsettled Situations (Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeaway: [Second Chance Point + Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers) We had 25 points in 27 unsettled situations = 0.926 points They had 44 points in 30 unsettled situations = 1.467 points Manufactured Possessions (One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers) We had 27 + 18 = 45 They had 38 + 17 = 55 Hustle Stats One of the radio sponsors gives an award to the team that had the most “hustle stats”, which they define as rebounds + steals + blocks. I decided to keep track of that, too: We had 27 + 3 + 8 = 38 They had 38 + 4 + 14 = 56 Scoring Shooting (Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws) We were 16 for 31 on twos, (51.6%), 9 for 21 on threes (42.9%) and 13 for 22 on frees (59.1%) They were 22 for 31 on twos, (71.0%), 7 for 23 on threes (30.4%) and 19 for 28 on frees (67.9%) Combined percentages were: 1536 (516 + 429 + 591) vs. 1693 (710 + 304 + 679) = -157 Points (PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum” POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots) TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, two point jumpers from outside the paint, FBP = fast break points POTO= points off turnovers We had 20 PIP, 39 POP, 27 OL, 12 TZ, 20 POTO, 10 FBP They had 44 PIP, 21 POP, 21 OL, 0 TZ, 27 POTO, 15 FBP Fast Break Percentage (FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals) We scored 10 FBP in 29 opportunities (34.5%) They scored 15 FBP in 43 opportunities (34.9%) First Chance/Second Chance (FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.) We had 44 FCP and 4 SCP They had 33 FCP and 8 SCP Last Possessions (Points scored on the last full possession of a half, a game or an overtime period.) We scored 6 points They scored 0 points Starters/Bench (Total points – bench points = starters points) Our starters scored 68 points and our bench scored 4 points Their starters scored 76 points and their bench scored 8 points Assists (The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted) We assisted 7 of our 25 field goals = 28.0% They assisted 16 of their 29 field goals = 55.2% Team Offensive Possession Efficiency (Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions) We scored 72 points in 71 possessions = 1.014 points/ possession They scored 84 points in 72 possessions = 1.167 points/possession It was a 143 possession game. If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession: We scored 72 points in 62 possessions = 1.161 points/ possession They scored 84 points in 67 possessions = 1.254 points/possession Team Shooting Efficiency (Points minus missed field goals and free throws) We scored 72 points, missed 27 field goals and 9 missed free throws = net 36 They scored 84 points, missed 25 field goals and 9 missed free throws = net 50 (Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot) We scored 72 on 31 two point attempts, 21 three point attempts and 22 free throw attempts = 72 of a possible 147 points = 49.0% of possible points scored. They scored 84 on 31 two point attempts, 23 three point attempts and 28 free throw attempts = 84 of a possible 159 points = 52.8% of possible points scored. Breakdown by Quarters (Points scored between the beginning of the game and the 10 minute mark of the first half, then halftime, then the 10 minute mark of the second half, the end of regulation and then overtime of there was one) 11-23, 17-11, 23-21, 21-29 Fouls (Two point shots and free throws attempted per times fouled.) We attempted 31 two point shots, attempted 22 free throws and were fouled 17 times = 1.82; 1.29 They attempted 31 two point shots, attempted 28 free throws and were fouled 22 times = 1.41; 1.27 They were more likely to get calls when attempting two point shots but we got more free throws per foul, (by a slight margin). Comments - It was the 6th time in 9 games that our first field goal was a trey from Frank Howard. - Elijah Hughes played 40 minutes in both games. No one else did. - We had 5 second chance points. They had 17. That’s the margin of defeat. - Duke was also +7 on points from turnovers on one less turnover. Overall they had 44 points in unsettled situations to 25 for us. They also had 5 more fast break points. They were simply more aggressive when they got the ball against a defense that wasn’t set. - Although the fast break percentage (35%) was the same for both teams. They just got more chances. (29-43) - After Pitt shot 25% on two point shots, Duke, (thanks to Zion), shot 71%. - In two ACCT games, we were 21 for 48 from the three point arc (43.75%). - We out-scored them from the Twilight Zone 12-0, which allowed us to stay in the game as long as we did. - JB and Coach K are famous for their short rotations and their benches scored 12 points in this, game, 7.7% of the games’ scoring. - I’ve often said that assists are the one that that is an opinion. We have only 7 in 25 made baskets to their 16 in 29. We hit plenty of jump shots, which most assists come from. We passed the ball and hit the open man. We didn’t do the Iso-ball thing. We got a lot more than 7 assists.
