I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.)
Net Points
(points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls)
Joe Girard +34NP in 34 minutes = +73NP in 84 minutes = +34.8NP/40 for season
Jesse Edwards +13NP in 26 minutes = +36NP in 64 minutes = +22.5NP/40 for season
Jimmy Boeheim +13NP in 34 minutes = +45NP in 92 minutes = +19.6NP/40 for season
Buddy Boeheim +8NP in 40 minutes = +48NP in 109 minutes = +17.6NP/40 for season
Cole Swider +3NP in 24 minutes = +41NP in 89 minutes = +18.4NP/40 for season
Frank Anselem +2NP in 9 minutes = +19NP in 42 minutes = +18.1NP/40 for season
Symir Torrence +2NP in 11 minutes = +9NP in 50 minutes = +7.2NP/40 for season
Benny Williams +2NP in 22 minutes = +7NP in 59 minutes = +4.7NP/40 for season
DNP coach’s decision
John Bol Ajak 0NP in 0 minutes = +5NP in 7 minutes = +28.5NP/40 for season
Chaz Owens 0NP in 0 minutes = 0NP in 0 minutes = 0.0NP/40 for season
Injured and couldn’t play
Bourama Sidibie 0NP in 0 minutes = 0NP in 0 minutes = 0.0NP/40 for season

Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog)
(Points plus assists)
Joe Girard 27 points and 8 assists = 35
Shooting Efficiency
(Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts)
Joe Girard 27 points – 6 mfg – 0 mft = +21
Scoring Efficiency
(Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points)
Jesse Edwards 8 points of 12 = 66.7% (Joe was 27/42 = 64.3%)
My Man
(Who played the most minutes?)
Buddy Boeheim 40 minutes
TEAM STATS
Possession
Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 12 of our 37 misses = 32.4%
They rebounded 19 of their 41 misses = 46.3%
Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)
We got 16 points on 12 O-Rebs = 1.333 points/O-Reb
They got 18 points on 19 O-Rebs = 0.947 points/O-Reb
Points per Takeover
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)
We had 11 points from 11 takeovers = 1.000 points/takeaway
They had 11 points from 10 takeovers = 1.100 points/takeaway
Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeover: [Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 27 points in 23 unsettled situations = 1.174 points/situation
They had 29 points in 29 unsettled situations = 1.000 points/situation
Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 34 + 11 = 45
They had 44 + 10 = 54
Scoring
Shooting
(Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 21 for 41 on twos, (51.2%), 7 for 23 on threes (30.4%) and 22 for 25 on frees (88.0%)
They were 14 for 27 on twos, (51.9%), 18 for 43 on threes (41.9%) and 18 for 21 on frees (85.7%)
Points
(PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum”
POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made
OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots)
TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint)
FT = Free Throws
We had 32 PIP, 31 POP, 21 OL, 10 TZ, 22FT
They had 28 PIP, 54 POP, 54 OL, 0 TZ, 18FT
Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 12 FBP in 34 opportunities (35.3%)
They scored 8 FBP in 36 opportunities (22.2%)
First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 35 FCP and 16 SCP
They had 56 FCP and 18 SCP
Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 73 points and our bench scored 12 points.
Their starters scored 72 points and their bench scored 284 points.
Efficiency
Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 13 of our 28 field goals = 46.4%
They assisted 26 of their 32 field goals = 81.25%
Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 85 points in 74 possessions = 1.149 points/ possession
They scored 100 points in 72 possessions = 1.389 points/possession
It was a 146-possession game.
If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:
We scored 85 points in 76 possessions = 1.118 points/ possession
They scored 100 points in 80 possessions = 1.250 points/possession
Team Shooting Efficiency
(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)
We scored 85 points, missed 36 field goals and missed 3 free throws = net +46
They scored 100 points, missed 38 field goals and missed 3 free throws = net +59
(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)
We scored 85 on 41 two-point attempts, 23 three-point attempts and 25 free throw attempts = 85 of a possible 176 points = 48.3% of possible points scored.
They scored 100 on 27 two-point attempts, 43 three-point attempts and 21 free throw attempts = 100 of a possible 204 points = 49.0% of possible points scored.
Fouls
(Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.)
We attempted 41 two-point shots and were fouled 18 times = 2.27
They attempted 27 two-point shots and were fouled 17 times = 1.59
At this rate, if they’d taken 41 two-point shots, we’d have been called for 26 fouls.
Comments
- Hidden in the carnage is the fact that Joe Girard is off to a fantastic start. He’s playing like a man on a mission – and remember that Buddy Boeheim really came into his own as a junior. They could make quite a pair this year, (if they play some defense).
- Our rebounding actually improved from 19% of our own shots to 32% but Colgate improved over Drexel’s 30% to 46%. It was defensive rebounding that killed us.
- I know it’s tough to rebound from a zone but 6-1, (they say)) Joe Girard had 7 of them in 34 minutes. 6-9 Cole Swider and 6-8 Benny Williams had 3 in 46 minutes. Yougaddawanna!
- Ewe made more two-point shots and more free throws. The game was lost because they had 18 three pointers to our 7. Colgate missed their first 12 treys, then made 18 of 31, an astonishing 58%. They weren’t just hot: they moved the ball beautifully to get those shots and we spent the game chasing them, always a pass behind. We also let them get into the high post too easily and turned to deal with that threat, opening things up for the pass back outside.
- But just as important was that we missed 16 of our 23 attempts. Including our two exhibitions, we’ve hit 11, 11, 13 and then 8 and now 7 three, the lower figures coming against easily the two best teams.
- We got beat in the opening sets: 35 FCP vs. 56.
- Our starters out-scored theirs 73-72 but their bench out-scored ours 12-28. Why does Colgate have a better bench than we do?
- We scored 48.3% of the points that could have been scored on the shots we took. They scored 49%. Close game, right? But their shots could have gotten them 204 points to our 176 because they got off so many three pointers. Shouldn’t a team with our shooters have more potential points than the opposition?
- So far this season We have attempted 121 two-point shots and been fouled 40 times (3.025) while our opposition has attempted 78 twos and been fouled 43 times (1.81). At that rate, if they had attempted 121 twos, they would have drawn 67 fouls. They have been more likely to get calls in all three regular season games.
