I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.)
Net Points
(points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls)
Jesse Edwards +19NP in 31 minutes = +86NP in 146 minutes = +23.6NP/40 for season
Cole Swider +12NP in 32 minutes = +70NP in 193 minutes = +14.5NP/40 for season
Buddy Boeheim +11NP in 32 minutes = +95NP in 219 minutes = +17.4NP/40 for season
Symir Torrence +7NP in 21 minutes = +15NP in 81 minutes = +7.4NP/40 for season
Benny Williams +4NP in 21 minutes = +12NP in 103 minutes = +4.7NP/40 for season
Frank Anselem +3NP in 9 minutes = +21NP in 71 minutes = +11.8NP/40 for season
Joe Girard +2NP in 27 minutes = +83NP in 185 minutes = +17.9NP/40 for season
Jimmy Boeheim 0NP in 24 minutes = +78NP in 188 minutes = +16.6NP/40 for season
John Bol Ajak 0NP in 3 minutes = +5NP in 10 minutes = +20.0NP/40 for season

Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog)
(Points plus assists)
Buddy Boeheim 17 points and 2 assists = 19
Shooting Efficiency
(Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts)
Jesse Edwards 17 points – 1mfg – 2mft = +14
Scoring Efficiency
(Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points)
Jesse Edwards 17 points of 21 = 81.0%
My Man
(Who played the most minutes?)
Buddy Boeheim and Cole Swider 32 minutes
TEAM STATS
Possession
Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 5 of our 32 misses = 15.6%
They rebounded 11 of their 34 misses = 32.4%
Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)
We got 6 points on 5 O-Rebs = 1.200 points/O-Reb
They got 9 points on 11 O-Rebs = 0.818 points/O-Reb
Points per Takeover
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)
We had 8 points from 7 takeovers = 1.319 points/takeaway
They had 20 points from 15 takeovers = 1.333 points/takeaway
Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeover: [Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 14 points in 12 unsettled situations = 1.167 points/situation
They had 29 points in 26 unsettled situations = 1.115 points/situation
Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 28 + 7 = 35
They had 38 + 15 = 53
Scoring
Shooting
(Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 13 for 29 on twos, (44.8%), 7 for 19 on threes (36.8%) and 21 for 26 on frees (80.8%)
They were 22 for 37 on twos, (59.5%), 12 for 30 on threes (40.0%) and 9 for 13 on frees (69.2%)
Points
(PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum”
POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made
OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots)
TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint)
FT = Free Throws
We had 26 PIP, 21 POP, 21 OL, 0 TZ, 21 FT
They had 42 PIP, 38 POP, 36 OL, 2 TZ, 9 FT
Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 6 FBP in 29 opportunities (20.7%)
They scored 11 FBP in 43 opportunities (25.6%)
First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 35 FCP and 6 SCP
They had 60 FCP and 9 SCP
Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 68 points and our bench scored 11 points.
Their starters scored 56 points and their bench scored 33 points.
Efficiency
Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 13 of our 20 field goals = 65.0%
They assisted 23 of their 34 field goals = 67.6%
Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 68 points in 70 possessions = 0.971 points/ possession
They scored 89 points in 69 possessions = 1.290 points/possession
It was a 139-possession game.
If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:
We scored 68 points in 60 possessions = 1.133 points/ possession
They scored 89 points in 73 possessions = 1.219 points/possession
Team Shooting Efficiency
(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)
We scored 68 points, missed 28 field goals and missed 5 free throws = net +35
They scored 89 points, missed 33 field goals and missed 4 free throws = net +52
(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)
We scored 68 on 29 two-point attempts, 19 three-point attempts and 26 free throw attempts = 68 of a possible 141 points = 48.2% of possible points scored.
They scored 89 on 37 two-point attempts, 30 three-point attempts and 13 free throw attempts = 89 of a possible 177 points = 50.3% of possible points scored.
Fouls
(Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.)
We attempted 29 two-point shots and were fouled 20 times = 1.45
They attempted 37 two-point shots and were fouled 10 times = 3.70
At this rate, if we’d attempted 37 two point shots, we would have drawn 26 fouls
Comments
- We shot 59.5% from two vs. Arizona State. Auburn shot 59.5% from two against us.
- We had 11 three sin each of the exhibition games and 13 against Lafayette. Since then it’s been 8, 7, 5, 8, 7. On the season, in the ‘official’ games we’ve hit 48 threes to 74 for the opposition. Aren’t we supposed to be the great shooting machine?
- We’ve now lost ‘First Chance Points’ four games in a row by a combined 146-222.
- Much was made in the two exhibition games and the win over Lafayette about all the assists we were getting: 21, 26 and 26. Our opponents got 16, 14 and 16. Since the Drexel game it’s been
- 17/13/8/14/13 vs. 12/26/19/22/23. Normally, the team with a higher assist ratio loses because they are depending too much on jump shots, (which produce more assists because there is less dribbling with a jump shot so the passer gets more credit). But this is the Steph Curry Era where teams are more dependent on jump shooting than ever before and that assist ratio tendency isn’t as true as it used to be. Assists have become a more meaningful statistic and it’s a battle we are losing.
- We missed only 28 field goal attempts. The missed 33. But because the dominated both the boards and the turnovers they attempted 19 more field goals than we did.
- We got calls from the refs. Auburn was called for twice as many fouls as we were. But they played 11 guys and nobody fouled out. They wanted to see how much they could away with. Refs tend to call what is unusual and a more physically aggressive team will get away with more because being ‘physical’ is their style. A finesse team like Syracuse gets called for minor physical contact because that’s their style. So 10 fouls to 20 doesn’t create the advent age you might have expected it to.
