I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.) Net Points (points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls) Average net points/40 by position, (based on averaging 20+ minutes per game), since the 1980-81 season: Centers 18.6; Power Forwards: 18.4; Small Forwards: 16.1, Shooting Guards: 13.3; Point Guards: 13.5 Cole Swider +26NP in 40 minutes = +311NP in 822 minutes = +15.1NP/40 for season Joe Girard +19NP in 33 minutes = +296NP in 803 minutes = +14.7NP/40 for season Symir Torrence +8NP in 10 minutes = +81NP in 273 minutes = +11.9NP/40 for season Jimmy Boeheim +7NP in 35 minutes = +291NP in 828 minutes = +14.1NP/40 for season Frank Anselem +5NP in 23 minutes = +64NP in 243 minutes = +10.5NP/40 for season Buddy Boeheim +3NP in 40 minutes = +334NP in 899 minutes = +14.9NP/40 for season Benny Williams +2NP in 6 minutes = +15NP in 260 minutes = +2.3NP/40 for season Jesse Edwards -5NP in 13 minutes = +352NP in 673 minutes = +20.9NP/40 for season DNP coach’s decision John Bol Ajak 0NP in 0 minutes = +8NP in 36 minutes = +8.9NP/40 for season Chaz Owens 0NP in 0 minutes = +3NP in 5 minutes = +24.0NP/40 for season Bourama Sidibie 0NP in 0 minutes = +1NP in 8 minutes = +5.0NP/40 for season Injured or ill and couldn’t play Suspended None Redshirting None (that we know of) Out for the year None Left Team None Awards Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog) (Points plus assists) Cole Swider 21 points and 2 assists = 23 and Joe Girard 19 points and 4 assists = 23 Shooting Efficiency (Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts) Cole Swider 21 points – 5mfg – 0mft = +16 Scoring Efficiency (Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points) Cole Swider 21 points of 34 = 61.8% My Man (Who played the most minutes?) Cole Swider and Buddy Boeheim 34 minutes TEAM STATS Possession Rebounding (Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that) We rebounded 9 of our 37 misses = 24.3% They rebounded 14 of their 45 misses = 31.1% Effective Offensive Rebounding (Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds) We got 8 points on 9 O-Rebs = 0.889 points/O-Reb They got 7 points on 14 O-Rebs = 0.500 points/O-Reb Points per Takeover (Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had) We had 5 points from 10 takeovers = 0.500 points/takeaway They had 12 points from 10 takeovers = 1.200 points/takeaway Unsettled Situations (Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeover: [Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers) We had 13 points in 19 unsettled situations = 0.681 points/situation They had 19 points in 24 unsettled situations = 0.792 points/situation Manufactured Possessions (One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers) We had 40 + 10 = 50 They had 42 + 10 = 52 Scoring Shooting (Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws) We were 13 for 37 on twos, (35.1%), 11 for 24 on threes (45.8%) and 14 for 16 on frees (87.5%) They were 21 for 44 on twos, (47.7%), 6 for 28 on threes (21.4%) and 4 for 6 on frees (66.7%) Points (PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum” POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots) TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint) FT = Free Throws We had 16 PIP, 43 POP, 33 OL, 10 TZ, 14 FT They had 40 PIP, 20 POP, 18 OL, 2 TZ, 4 FT Fast Break Percentage (FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals) We scored 9 FBP in 40 opportunities (22.5%) They scored 18 FBP in 36 opportunities (50.0%) First Chance/Second Chance (FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.) We had 42 FCP and 8 SCP They had 35 FCP and 7 SCP Starters/Bench (Total points – bench points = starters points) Our starters scored 65 points and our bench scored 8 points. Their starters scored 45 points and their bench scored 19 points. Efficiency Assists (The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted) We assisted 9 of our 24 field goals = 37.5% They assisted 15 of their 27 field goals = 55.6% Team Offensive Possession Efficiency (Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions) We scored 73 points in 70 possessions = 1.043 points/ possession They scored 64 points in 71 possessions = 0.901 points/possession It was a 141-possession game. If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession: We scored 73 points in 69 possessions = 1.058 points/ possession They scored 64 points in 75 possessions = 0.853 points/possession Team Shooting Efficiency (Points minus missed field goals and free throws) We scored 73 points, missed 37 field goals and missed 2 free throws = net +34 They scored 64 points, missed 35 field goals and missed 2 free throws = net +27 (Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot) We scored 73 on 37 two-point attempts, 24 three-point attempts and 16 free throw attempts = 73 of a possible 162 points = 45.1% of possible points scored. They scored 64 on 44 two-point attempts, 28 three-point attempts and 6 free throw attempts = 64 of a possible 175 points = 36.0% of possible points scored. Fouls (Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.) We attempted 37 two-point shots and were fouled 16 times = 2.31 They attempted 44 two-point shots and were fouled 14 times = 3.14 Comments: - When the guy with the highest NP per 40 average, (Jesse Edwards +20.9), has your lowest NP in a game, (-5), and you win anyway, you feel…relieved. I expect Jesse to come back big in the next game. - Once again we failed to convert takeovers int o points as efficiently as our opposition. Both teams had 10 turnovers but they got 12 points out of them. We got 5. Those 7 points mattered down the stretch. - We are supposed to be the exciting offensive team, BC the plodding defensive team. We had 9 fast break points. They had 18. I think these last two items are about team speed. - We went from 21 assists on Saturday to 9 tonight. Sy Torrance had 3 in 10 minutes, Joe Girard 4 in 33. Buddy and Jimmy went from 10 assists, (5 each), vs. Louisville to zilch in this game. - We’d hit 69%, 60% and 57% of our two point shots in the first three games of this winning streak. Tonight, it was 35%. Because of that we went from +10, +12 and +12 in points in the paint the last three games to -24 tonight. - We won because we continued to his three pointers at an amazing rate: 53%, 58%, 52% and now 46%. That’s a combined 44/85 = 52% through the four wins. - Wea re also getting to the line more than our opponents and getting the right people, (Buddy, Cole and Joe), on it. We are 54/70 in the four games (77%). - BC actually had a big edge in the foul called until they started fouling down the stretch to get the ball back. But with Joe, they are getting the ball back down two more points each time.
