I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.) This is limited to recruited scholarship players only.

Net Points
(points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls)

Average net points/40 by position, (based on averaging 20+ minutes per game), since the 1980-81 season:
Centers 18.6; Power Forwards: 18.4; Small Forwards: 16.1, Shooting Guards: 13.3; Point Guards: 13.5

Jesse Edwards +31NP in 39 minutes = +472NP in 749 minutes = +25.2NP/40 for season
Joe Girard +17NP in 35 minutes = +274NP in 818 minutes = +13.4NP/40 for season
Judah Mintz +15NP in 27 minutes = +277NP in 762 minutes = +14.5NP/40 for season
Maliq Brown +9NP in 37 minutes = +205NP in 418 minutes = +19.6NP/40 for season
Justin Taylor +8NP in 26 minutes = +109NP in 407 minutes = +10.7NP/40 for season
Symir Torrence +5NP in 17 minutes = +111NP in 288 minutes = +15.4NP/40 for season
Benny Williams 0NP in 0 minutes = +137NP in 491 minutes = +11.2NP/40 for season
Chris Bell -2NP in 11 minutes = +89NP in 451 minutes = +7.9NP/40 for season
Mounir Hima 0NP in 1 minute = +51NP in 178 minutes = +11.5NP/40 for season

DNP coach’s decision
John Bol Ajak 0NP in 0 minutes = +34NP in 120 minutes = +11.3NP/40 for season
Quadir Copeland 0NP in 0 minutes = +25NP in 100 minutes = +10.0NP/40 for season

Injured or ill and couldn’t play

Redshirting
Peter Carey 0NP in 0 minutes = -2NP in 20 minutes = -4.0NP/40 for season

Out for the year
None

Left Team

Awards

Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog)
(Points plus assists)
Jesse Edwards 27 points and 2 assists = 29

Shooting Efficiency
(Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts)
Jesse Edwards 27 points – 3mfg – 1mft = +23

Scoring Efficiency
(Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points)
Jesse Edwards 27 points of 34 = 79.4%

My Man
(Who played the most minutes?)
Jesse Edwards 39 minutes

TEAM STATS

Possession

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 7 of our 25 misses = 28.0%
They rebounded 13 of their 37 misses = 35.1%

Unsettled Situations
[Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 29 points in 19 unsettled situations = 1.526 points/situation
They had 16 points in 23 unsettled situations = 0.696 points/situation

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 31 + 12 = 43
They had 31 + 10 = 41

Scoring

Shooting
(Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 22 for 37 on twos, (59.5%), 4 for 14 on threes (28.6%) and 21 for 24 on frees (87.5%)
They were 16 for 30 on twos, (53.3%), 11 for 35 on threes (31.4%) and 3 for 4 on frees (75.0%)

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum”
POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made
OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots)
TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint)
FT = Free Throws

We had 28 PIP, 28 POP, 12 OL, 16 TZ, 21 FT
They had 30 PIP, 35 POP, 33 OL, 2 TZ, 3 FT

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 2 FBP in 35 opportunities (5.7%)
They scored 4 FBP in 27 opportunities (14.8%)

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 43 FCP and 11 SCP
They had 52 FCP and 9 SCP

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 64 points and our bench scored 13 points.
Their starters scored 55 points and their bench scored 13 points.

Efficiency

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 15 of our 26 field goals = 57.6%
They assisted 20 of their 27 field goals = 74.1%

Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 77 points in 65 possessions = 1.185 points/ possession
They scored 68 points in 66 possessions = 1.030 points/possession
It was a 131-possession game.

If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:
We scored 77 points in 62 possessions = 1.242 points/ possession
They scored 68 points in 67 possessions = 1.015 points/possession

Team Shooting Efficiency

(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)

We scored 77 points, missed 25 field goals and missed 3 free throws = net +49
They scored 68 points, missed 38 field goals and missed 1 free throws = net +29

(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)

We scored 77 on 37 two-point attempts, 14 three-point attempts and 24 free throw attempts = 77 of a possible 140 points = 55.0% of possible points scored.
They scored 68 on 30 two-point attempts, 35 three-point attempts and 4 free throw attempts = 68 of a possible 169 points = 39.1% of possible points scored.

Fouls

(Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.)
We attempted 37 two-point shots and were fouled 19 times = 1.95
They attempted 30 two-point shots and were fouled 8 times = 3.75

Comments:

- Jesse Edwards won all the awards for the second time this season, the only player to do it. The first was the first Notre Dame game.

- It was amazing that we were out-scored in the paint, 28-40 with Jesse scoring 27 points by himself. Some of those sky hooks were outside the paint.

- We had more second chance points, 11-9, despite having 7 offensive rebounds to 13.

- We’ve shot 63.6% and 59.5% in consecutive games. We’ve been 55% or above ten times.

- But we’ve shot 7 for 29 from three in those last two games (24.1%)

- We got out-scored in ‘first chance points’ 43-52 and lost the offensive rebounding battle, too 7-13, yet won the game because we actually had more second chance points and far more free throws.

- We won this game at the foul line and hitting 87.5% rather than 61.1, as against Virginia, helped.

- I’ve got to admit, even if we don’t take as many jump shots, that foul shot differential is pretty severe, and very similar to the differential we suffered from in the North Carolina game, (24-4 vs. 3-23).
