TEAM STATS

Possession

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 13 of our 34 misses = 38.2%
They rebounded 13 of their 38 misses = 34.2%

Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)
We got 15 points on 13 O-Rebs = 1.154 points/O-Reb
They got 12 points on 13 O-Rebs = 0.923 points/O-Reb

Unforced Turnovers
(Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers)
We had 10 turnovers – 4 steals = 6 unforced
They had 18 turnovers – 10 steals = 8 unforced

Points per Takeover
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)
We had 23 points from 18 takeovers = 1.278 points/takeaway
They had 16 points from 10 takeovers = 1.600 points/takeaway

Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeover: [Second Chance Point s+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 38 points in 31 unsettled situations = 1.226 points
They had 28 points in 23 unsettled situations = 1.217 points

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 38 + 18 = 56
They had 34 + 10 = 44

Hustle Stats
One of the radio sponsors gives an award to the team that had the most “hustle stats”, which they define as rebounds + steals + blocks. I decided to keep track of that, too:
We had 38 + 3 + 10 = 51
They had 34 + 1 + 4= 39

Scoring

Shooting
(Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 21 for 37 on twos, (56.8%), 7 for 23 on threes (30.4%) and 21 for 25 on frees (84.0%)
They were 6 for 16 on twos, (37.5%), 19 for 42 on threes (45.2%) and 2 for 10 on frees (20.0%)
Combined percentages were: 1712 (568 + 304 + 840) vs. 1027 (375 + 452 + 200) = +685

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum”
POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made
OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots)
TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint)
FBP = fast break points
POTO= points off turnovers

We had 28 PIP, 35 POP, 21 OL, 14 TZ, 23 POTO, 5 FBP
They had 12 PIP, 57 POP, 57 OL, 0 TZ, 16 POTO, 2 FBP

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 5 FBP in 38 opportunities (13.2%)
They scored 2 FBP in 26 opportunities (7.7%)

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 43 FCP and 15 SCP
They had 55 FCP and 12 SCP

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 70 points and our bench scored 14 points
Their starters scored 56 points and their bench scored 15 points

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 9 of our 28 field goals = 32.1%
They assisted 23 of their 25 field goals = 92.0%

Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 84 points in 69 possessions = 1.217 points/ possession
They scored 71 points in 68 possessions = 1.044 points/possession
It was a 137 possession game.

If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:
We scored 84 points in 72 possessions = 1.167 points/ possession
They scored 71 points in 63 possessions = 1.127 points/possession

Team Shooting Efficiency

(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)

We scored 84 points, missed 32 field goals and missed 4 free throws = net +48
They scored 71 points, missed 33 field goals and missed 8 free throws = net +30
(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)

We scored 84 on 37 two point attempts, 23 three point attempts and 25 free throw attempts = 84 of a possible 168 points = 50.0% of possible points scored.
They scored 71 on 16 two point attempts, 42 three point attempts and 10 free throw attempts = 71 of a possible 168 points = 42.3% of possible points scored.

Breakdown by Quarters
(Points scored between the beginning of the game and the 10 minute mark of the first half, then halftime, then the 10 minute mark of the second half, the end of regulation and then overtime of there was one)

16-14, 19-13, 20-15, 29-29

Fouls

(Two point shots and free throws attempted per times fouled.)
We attempted 37 two point shots, attempted 25 free throws and were fouled 19 times = 1.76; 1.19
They attempted 16 two point shots, attempted 10 free throws and were fouled 19 times = 1.45; 0.91
They were more likely to get calls when attempting two point shots but we got more shots per foul.

Comments

- Jim Boeheim said that our initial defense was pretty good and that BC got a lot of threes after offensive rebounds. They had 12 second chance points, so that couldn’t have happened more than 4 times and they had 19 threes. They had 2 fast break points. The other 15 threes came against our set defense, which is why they had 55 first chance points to our 43.

- We won the game at the foul line, sinking 21 free throws to 2. We did that by driving to the basket while they were jacking up threes and making 84% to their ridiculous 20%.

- Against UNC we got outscored 16-37 in unsettled situations, (after turnovers and offensive rebounds). We lost the game by 13 points. Here we outs-cored BC 38-28, despite their threes after offensive rebounds and won the game by 13.

- Why assists are a poor measure of team performance:
We assisted 9 of our 28 field goals = 32.1%
They assisted 23 of their 25 field goals = 92.0%
Scorers are looking for baskets where the shooter didn’t have to make a move to score. That means that assists are more likely to come on jump shots rather than dramatic passes to someone running to the basket. But it’s hard to win a game just with jump shots, even if you make 19 threes.
