I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of the non-conference season, the ACC season and the post season. Net Points (points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls) Elijah Hughes +20NP in 40 minutes = +366/792 = +18.5NP/40 for season Buddy Boeheim +9NP in 40 minutes = +213/753 = +11.3NP/40 for season Joe Girard +8NP in 34 minutes = +217/660 = +13.2NP/40 for season Quincy Guerrier +6NP in 27 minutes = +119/392 = +12.1NP/40 for season Marek Dolezaj +5NP in 26 minutes = +273/701 = +15.6NP/40 for season Bourama Sidibie +4NP in 21 minutes = +176/492 = +14.3NP/40 for season Jesse Edwards -2NP in 14 minutes = +34/101 = +13.5NP/40 for season DNP coach’s decision Brycen Goodine 0NP in 0 minutes = +14/129 = +4.3NP/40 for season Injured Robert Braswell 0NP in 0 minutes = +13/48 = +10.8NP/40 for season Jalen Carey 0NP in 0 minutes = -3/23 = -5.2NP/40 for season Howard Washington 0NP in 0 minutes = +35/103 = +13.6NP/40 for season Suspended None Redshirting John Bol Ajak Out for the year None Left Team None Awards Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog) (Points plus assists) Elijah Hughes 22 points and 2 assists = 24 Shooting Efficiency (Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts) Elijah Hughes 21 points – 8 mfg – 1 mft = +12 Scoring Efficiency (Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points) Marek Dolezaj 8 points of 12 = 66.7% Sat Us Down (Who scored the first SU basket of each half?) 1st Half- Buddy Boeheim jumper at 18:06 2nd Half- Elijah Hughes jumper at 18:24 TACO Bell MVP (Who scored the point that got us to 70 points) Joe Girard trey 1:34 My Man (Who played the most minutes?) Buddy Boeheim and Elijah Hughes 40 minutes TEAM STATS Possession Rebounding (Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that) We rebounded 8 of our 33 misses = 24.2% They rebounded 11 of their 29 misses = 37.9% Effective Offensive Rebounding (Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds) We got 11 points on 8 O-Rebs = 1.375 points/O-Reb They got 8 points on 11 O-Rebs = 0.727 points/O-Reb Unforced Turnovers (Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers) We had 8 turnovers – 5 steals = 3 unforced They had 16 turnovers – 10 steals = 6 unforced Points per Takeover (Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had) We had 15 points from 16 takeovers = 0.938 points/takeaway They had 11 points from 8 takeovers = 1.375 points/takeaway Unsettled Situations (Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeover: [Second Chance Point s+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers) We had 26 points in 24 unsettled situations = 1.083 points They had 19 points in 19 unsettled situations = 1.000 points Manufactured Possessions (One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers) We had 26 + 16 = 42 They had 36 + 8 = 44 Hustle Stats One of the radio sponsors gives an award to the team that had the most “hustle stats”, which they define as rebounds + steals + blocks. I decided to keep track of that, too: We had 26 + 3 + 10 = 39 They had 36 + 2 + 5= 43 Scoring Shooting (Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws) We were 16 for 30 on twos, (53.3%), 8 for 27 on threes (29.6%) and 14 for 15 on frees (93.3%) They were 17 for 26 on twos, (65.4%), 9 for 28 on threes (32.1%) and 10 for 12 on frees (83.3%) Combined percentages were: 1762 (533 + 296 + 933) vs. 1808 (654 + 321 + 833) = -46 Points (PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum” POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots) TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint) FBP = fast break points POTO= points off turnovers We had 30 PIP, 26 POP, 24 OL, 2 TZ, 15 POTO, 4 FBP They had 32 PIP, 29 POP, 27 OL, 2 TZ, 11 POTO, 0 FBP Fast Break Percentage (FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals) We scored 4 FBP in 31 opportunities (12.9%) They scored 0 FBP in 32 opportunities (0.0%) First Chance/Second Chance (FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.) We had 41 FCP and 11 SCP They had 53 FCP and 8 SCP Starters/Bench (Total points – bench points = starters points) Our starters scored 64 points and our bench scored 6 points Their starters scored 63 points and their bench scored 8 points Assists (The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted) We assisted 4 of our 24 field goals = 16.7% They assisted 17 of their 26 field goals = 65.4% Team Offensive Possession Efficiency (Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions) We scored 70 points in 64 possessions = 1.098 points/ possession They scored 71 points in 65 possessions = 1.092 points/possession It was a 137 possession game. If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession: We scored 70 points in 64 possessions = 1.098 points/ possession They scored 71 points in 60 possessions = 1.183 points/possession Team Shooting Efficiency (Points minus missed field goals and free throws) We scored 70 points, missed 33 field goals and missed 1 free throws = net +36 They scored 71 points, missed 28 field goals and missed 2 free throws = net +41 (Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot) We scored 70 on 30 two point attempts, 27 three point attempts and 15 free throw attempts = 70 of a possible 156 points = 44.9% of possible points scored. They scored 71 on 26 two point attempts, 28 three point attempts and 12 free throw attempts = 71 of a possible 148 points = 48.0% of possible points scored. Breakdown by Quarters (Points scored between the beginning of the game and the 10 minute mark of the first half, then halftime, then the 10 minute mark of the second half, the end of regulation and then overtime of there was one) 11-17, 24-16, 17-16, 18-22 Fouls (Two point shots and free throws attempted per times fouled.) We attempted 30 two point shots, attempted 15 free throws and were fouled 13 times = 2.31; 1.15 They attempted 26 two point shots, attempted 12 free throws and were fouled 16 times = 1.625; 0.75 They were more likely to get calls when attempting two point shots but we got more shots per foul. Comments - We scored 11 points of off 8 offensive rebounds. They scored 8 points off of 11 offensive rebounds. But they also scored 11 points off of 8 turnovers. We have concluded that this has deep, significant meaning but if we told you what it was we'd have to kill you. - More strangeness: We got called for 16 fouls to 13 for them but we got to the line 15 times to their 12. Yet they lived in the paint, which is where you draw fouls. - Clemson’s 65.4% shooting on two point shots, (traditionally the most significant stat in terms of winning), is the third highest percentage we’ve given up this season, topped only by Virginia in the opener, (66.7%) and Virginia Tech (78.6%). We lost all three games but avenged the first two by holding them to 38.9% and 45.5%, respectively. Maybe we’ll get another shot at the tiger sin the ACCT. - We used to be a team that tried to win with three point shooting but our percentage there has declined from 44.4% to 25.0%, 30.8%, 23.8% and 29.6% over the last five games. - Even given that we are now driving to the basket for much of our points, a gap -13 in assists, (4 vs. 17), is not a good sign. - There were 4 fast break points in this game. We had all of them and two of them were on a goal tend. - First chance points in the last 5 games: 27-34, 52-57, 49-59, 25-31 and 41-53 = 194-234. We are not doing as well against set defenses as our opposition is, despite our many offensive weapons.
