I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.) Net Points (points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls) Joe Girard +27NP in 35 minutes = +230NP in 608 minutes = +15.1NP/40 for season Jesse Edwards +21NP in 34 minutes = +263NP in 516 minutes = +20.4NP/40 for season Buddy Boeheim +20NP in 40 minutes = +262NP in 683 minutes = +15.3NP/40 for season Jimmy Boeheim +14NP in 35 minutes = +230NP in 617 minutes = +14.9NP/40 for season Cole Swider +7NP in 32 minutes = +222NP in 618 minutes = +14.4NP/40 for season Symir Torrence +6NP in 14 minutes = +54NP in 212 minutes = +10.2NP/40 for season Benny Williams +1NP in 5 minutes = +15NP in 216 minutes = +2.8NP/40 for season Bourama Sidibie +1NP in 2 minutes = +1NP in 7 minutes = +5.7NP/40 for season Frank Anselem 0NP in 9 minutes = +37NP in 172 minutes = +8.6NP/40 for season DNP coach’s decision John Bol Ajak 0NP in 0 minutes = +5NP in 17 minutes = +11.8NP/40 for season Chaz Owens 0NP in 0 minutes = +4NP in 4 minutes = +40.0NP/40 for season Injured or ill and couldn’t play None Suspended None Redshirting None (that we know of) Out for the year None Left Team None Awards Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog) (Points plus assists) Joe Girard 23 points and 5 assists = 28 and Buddy Boeheim 25 points and 3 assists = 28 Shooting Efficiency (Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts) Joe Girard 23 points – 3mfg – 0mft = +20 Scoring Efficiency (Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points) Joe Girard 23 points of 30 = 76.7% My Man (Who played the most minutes?) Buddy Boeheim 40 minutes TEAM STATS Possession Rebounding (Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that) We rebounded 9 of our 31 misses = 29.0% They rebounded 4 of their 34 misses = 11.8% Effective Offensive Rebounding (Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds) We got 12 points on 9 O-Rebs = 1.333 points/O-Reb They got 5 points on 4 O-Rebs = 1.250 points/O-Reb Points per Takeover (Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had) We had 9 points from 9 takeovers = 1.000 points/takeaway They had 17 points from 10 takeovers = 1.700 points/takeaway Unsettled Situations (Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeover: [Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers) We had 21 points in 18 unsettled situations = 1.167 points/situation They had 22 points in 14 unsettled situations = 1.250 points/situation Manufactured Possessions (One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers) We had 39 + 9 = 48 They had 26 + 10 = 36 Scoring Shooting (Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws) We were 22 for 36 on twos, (61.1%), 9 for 22 on threes (40.9%) and 20 for 26 on frees (76.9%) They were 23 for 36 on twos, (51.6%), 8 for 27 on threes (29.6%) and 8 for 11 on frees (72.7%) Points (PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum” POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots) TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint) FT = Free Throws We had 38 PIP, 33 POP, 24 OL, 6 TZ, 20 FT They had 36 PIP, 34 POP, 27 OL, 10 TZ, 8 FT Fast Break Percentage (FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals) We scored 18 FBP in 42 opportunities (42.9%) They scored 13 FBP in 28 opportunities (46.4%) First Chance/Second Chance (FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.) We had 41 FCP and 12 SCP They had 52 FCP and 5 SCP Starters/Bench (Total points – bench points = starters points) Our starters scored 83 points and our bench scored 8 points. Their starters scored 53 points and their bench scored 25 points. Efficiency Assists (The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted) We assisted 13 of our 31 field goals = 41.9% They assisted 22 of their 31 field goals = 71.0% Team Offensive Possession Efficiency (Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions) We scored 91 points in 71 possessions = 1.282 points/ possession They scored 78 points in 73 possessions = 1.068 points/possession It was a 144-possession game. If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession: We scored 91 points in 70 possessions = 1.300 points/ possession They scored 78 points in 68 possessions = 1.147 points/possession Team Shooting Efficiency (Points minus missed field goals and free throws) We scored 91 points, missed 27 field goals and missed 6 free throws = net +58 They scored 78 points, missed 32 field goals and missed 3 free throws = net +43 (Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot) We scored 91 on 36 two-point attempts, 22 three-point attempts and 26 free throw attempts = 91 of a possible 164 points = 55.5% of possible points scored. They scored 78 on 36 two-point attempts, 27 three-point attempts and 11 free throw attempts = 78 of a possible 164 points = 47.6% of possible points scored. Fouls (Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.) We attempted 36 two-point shots and were fouled 21 times = 1.714 They attempted 36 two-point shots and were fouled 13 times = 2.769 Comments: - This might have been the best game of our three-year Buddy and Joe backcourt with 48 points, 6 rebounds, 8 assists, (vs. 4 turnovers), and 6 steals. They hit 15 of 34 shots, including 8 of 14 treys and 10 of 11 free throws. They totaled 47NP. - Teams normally score a point per possession and thus per offensive rebound and takeaway. When they score significantly more than that, the next thing to look at is fast break points. In the last two games Florida State and Clemson scored 39 points off of 22 SU turnovers. We scored 21 off of 19 takeovers. FSU and Clemson had 30 fast beak points to our 22, so that’s part of it but not all of it. We just didn’t respond well to our own turnovers, even in the half-court defense. - If all the shots had gone in, the game would have gone into overtime at 164-164. They out-shot us from two, 64% to 61%. But we out-shot them from three, supposedly their specialty, 41% to 30% and got to the line much more, 26 times to 11. - We seemed to have the advantage of the ref’s whistle in this one, getting fouled 21 times to 13 despite the same number of two-point attempts. But, of course, we aren’t complaining.
