I’ve added so many things to my post-game “Net Points” posts over the years that it’s become a very long post to read and a longer one to do. I’ve decided to have separate posts for the numbers for a particular game and for the cumulative season totals. It’s the later that takes most of the time and lengthens the post so much. There was too much verbiage and too many numbers.

I’m still going to figure the season totals but I’ll post them at three different stages of the season: after the pre-conference schedule, after the conference schedule and after the post season. In the meantime, I’ll go with this stream-lined version of “Net Points, etc.” after each game, with numbers and commentary only for that game. That should make it both quicker to do and more digestible.

Team Stats:
(I’ve decide to put the team that won the stat in bold and ties in italics.)

POSSESSION

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)

We rebounded 14 of our 33 misses = 42.4%
They rebounded 7 of their 30 misses = 23.3%

Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)

We got 17 points on 14 O-Rebs = 1.214 points/O-reb
They got 4 points on 7 O-Rebs = 0.571 points/ O-reb

Unforced Turnovers
(Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers)

We had 15 turnovers – 7 steals = 8 unforced
They had 17 turnovers – 11 steals = 6 unforced

Points per Takeaway
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)

We had 19 points from 17 takeaways = 1.118 points/takeaway
They had 16 points from 15 takeaways = 1.067 points/takeaway

Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeaway: [Second Chance Point + Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)

We had 36 points in 31 unsettled situations = 1.161 points
They had 20 points in 22 unsettled situations = 0.909 points

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)

We had 37 + 17 = 54

They had 26 + 15= 41

Scoring

Shooting
(shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)

We were 18 for 35 on twos, (51.4%), 4 for 16 on threes (25.0%) and 24 for 33 on frees (72.7%)
They were 13 for 28 on twos, (46.4%), 7 for 19 on threes (36.8%) and 16 for 23 on frees (69.6%)

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP –free throws made, TREY: points from three point shots, TZ= Twilight Zone, which is POP – TREY, two point jumpers from outside the paint, FBP = fast break points POTO= points off turnovers)

We had 28 PIP, 12 POP, 12 TREY, 8 TZ, 6 FBP, 19 POTO
They had 24 PIP, 21 POP, 21 TREY, 2 TZ, 4 FBP, 16 POTO

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)

We had 25 FCP and 17 SCP
They had 39 FCP and 4 SCP

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)

Our starters scored 67 points and our bench scored 5 points
Their starters scored 57 points and their bench scored 6 points

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)

We assisted 9 of our 22 field goals = 40.9%
They assisted 11 of their 20 field goals = 55.0%

Team Offensive Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)

We scored 72 points in 68 possessions = 1.059 points/possession
They scored 63 points in 68 possessions = 0.926 points/ possession
It was a 136 possession game.

Breakdown by Quarters
(Points scored between the beginning of the game and the 10 minute mark of the first half, then halftime, then the 10 minute mark of the second half, the end of regulation and then overtime of there was one)

22-15, 18-14, 20-17, 12-17

Fouls
(Two point shots, points in paint and free throws attempted per times fouled.)

We attempted 35 two point shots, scored 28 points in the paint, attempted 33 free throws and were fouled 21 times = 1.67; 1.33; 1.57
They attempted 28 two point shots, scored 24 points in the paint, attempted 23 free throws and were fouled 20 times = 1.40; 1.20; 1.15
They were more likely to draw fouls calls when they got it inside but got more shooting fouls called. The differences weren’t big ones.

Comments:

- We have out-rebounded every team we’ve played all season, including #2 Kansas and it hasn’t been close: 128/300 = 42.6% vs. 73/291 = 25.1%. The closest game was Maryland: 19/39 = 48.7% vs. 13/33 = 39.4%

- We have also led in manufactured professions in every game, by an average of 14. Only Kansas came within double figures, (52-48).

- We had a +16 advantage in unsettled situations (17-4 on second chance points and 19-16 points off turnovers = 36-20).

- We have out-shot 7 of 8 opponents inside the arc and are 50.3%-41.4% for the years. The one game we lost this stat is the one game we lost.

- Outside the arc, it’s the opposite. We have actually won this stat three times but not since the Oakland game and we are shooting 27.4% vs. 34.5%.

- We are now +58 from the Twilight Zone, 78-20. We’ve led in this stats 7 times and broken even against Kansas. It’s an important stat for this team because we don’t have a good three point game. But we have guys who can score from 10-15 feet. You may get more points form a shot beyond the arc but you get nothing if it doesn’t go in.
