I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.)

(points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls)

Average net points/40 by position, (based on averaging 20+ minutes per game), since the 1980-81 season:

If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:

Team Shooting Efficiency

We attempted 39 two-point shots and were fouled 12 times = 3.25
They attempted 26 two-point shots and were fouled 6 times = 4.33


Comments:

- Last I kept track of “combined percentages”: adding the two point, three point and free throw percentages, (I drop the decimals). Here are those stats for this game: Syracuse 487 + 172 + 500 = 1,159. Duke 615 + 378 + 714 = 1,707. We lost because we couldn’t throw it in the ocean and they could throw it in a wet sponge.

- Teams normally score a point per possession and thus per offensive rebound and takeaway. When they score significantly more than that, the next thing to look at is fast break points. In the last three games Florida State, Clemson and Duke scored 59 points off of 32 SU turnovers. We scored 34 off of 34 takeovers. FSU and Clemson had 38 fast break points to our 25, so that’s part of it but not all of it. We just didn’t respond well to our own turnovers, even in the half-court defense.

- Any time our starters get out-scored, we are likely to lose. When they get out-scored 49-66, forget it.

- Much was made in the chat room about the fact that Duke was getting a lot more assists than we were. Of course the shooter has to assist the passer in getting assists by making the shot. But we also seem to give up on the passing game sooner and more often than the other teams in favor of drives the basket, which take the assist ‘off’ because the shooter dribbles the ball before shooting.
