Team Stats:
(I’ve decided to put the team that won the stat in bold and ties in italics.)
POSSESSION
Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 14 of our 31 misses = 45.2%
They rebounded 16 of their 39 misses = 41.0%
Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)
We got 13 points on 14 O-Rebs = 0.929 points/O-reb
They got 17 points on 16 O-Rebs = 1.0625 points/O-reb
Unforced Turnovers
(Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers)
We had 16 turnovers – 8 steals = 8 unforced
They had 7 turnovers – 3 steals = 4 unforced
Points per Takeaway
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)
We had 8 points from 7 takeaways = 1.143 points/takeaway
They had 18 points from 16 takeaways = 1.125 points/takeaway
Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeaway: [Second Chance Point + Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 21 points in 21 unsettled situations = 0.810 points
They had 35 points in 32 unsettled situations = 1.094 points
Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 37 + 7 = 44
They had 33 + 16 = 49
Scoring
Shooting
(shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 21 for 38 on twos, (55.3%), 4 for 13 on threes (30.8%) and 11 for 17 on frees (64.7%)
They were 17 for 30 on twos, (56.7%), 5 for 26 on threes (19.2%) and 20 for 28 on frees (71.4%)
Points
(PIP= points in the paint, POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP –free throws made, TREY: points from three point shots, TZ= Twilight Zone, which is POP – TREY, two point jumpers from outside the paint, FBP = fast break points POTO= points off turnovers)
We had 30 PIP, 24 POP, 12 TREY, 12 TZ, 8 POTO, 2 FBP
They had 32 PIP, 19 POP, 15 TREY, 2 TZ, 18 POTO, 2 FBP
Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 2 FBP in 27 opportunities (7.4%)
They scored 2 FBP in 27 opportunities (7.4%)
First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 39 FCP and 13 SCP
They had 30 FCP and 17 SCP
Last Possessions
(Points scored on the last full possession of a half, a game or an overtime period.)
We scored 1 points
They scored 2 points
Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 61 points and our bench scored 4 points
Their starters scored 67 points and their bench scored 2 points
Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 12 of our 25 field goals = 48.0%
They assisted 13 of their 22 field goals = 59.1%
Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 65 points in 61 possessions = 1.066 points/ possession
They scored 69 points in 60 possessions = 1.115 points/possession
It was a 121 possession game. (We are averaging 130 a game in regulation.)
If you added, rather than subtracted the offensive rebounds, the ratings would be 0.730 for Syracuse and 0.756 for Duke. If you average ratings, (assuming that half the offensive rebounds result in tip in attempts and half are taken back out to rest the offense), it’s Syracuse 0.898 and Duke 0.936.
Team Shooting Efficiency
(points minus missed field goals and free throws)
We scored 65 points, missed 26 field goals and 6 free throws = net 33
They scored 69 points, missed 34 field goals and 8 free throws = net 27
(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)
We scored 65 on 38 two point attempts, 13 three point attempts and 17 free throw attempts = 65 of a possible 106 points = 61.3% of possible points scored.
They scored 69 on 30 two point attempts, 26 three point attempts and 28 free throw attempts = 69 of a possible 114 points = 60.5% of possible points scored. (see below for explanation)
Breakdown by Quarters
(Points scored between the beginning of the game and the 10 minute mark of the first half, then halftime, then the 10 minute mark of the second half, the end of regulation and then overtime of there was one)
17-16, 10-18, 18-16, 20-19
Fouls
(Two point shots and free throws attempted per times fouled.)
We attempted 38 two point shots, attempted 17 free throws and were fouled 16 times = 2.375; 1.06
They attempted 30 two point shots, attempted 28 free throws and were fouled 19 times = 1.58; 1.47
They were more likely to get calls when attempting two point shots and got more free throws out of it when they were fouled.
Comments:
- In an appropriate ending for this team that hung together through all the adversity, there was a four way tie for the Net Points title in the team’s final game with Tyus Battle, Oshae Brissett, Marek Dolezaj and paschal Chukwu all had exactly 10NP.
- 18 points off turnovers beat 8 points on turnovers. That’s likely to be the case in any close game.
- In the four NCAA games, we were outscored in the paint 82-92 and outside the arc 45-81. But we out-scored the opposition 50-12 from the Twilight Zone, (between the paint and the arc) and 60-45 from the line. Here’s to the 2 point jump shot!
- We led in bench points for the first time in 16 games- since the game at Pittsburgh. Duke only two points form their bench. Maybe Jordan Tucker should have stayed. Coach K had two guys play 40 minutes and another play 39. Remind you of anyone?
- We led in assist percentage three times this season- Texas Southern, Eastern Michigan and NC State. Assists are not our thing.
- We are averaging 130 possession games but the Arizona State game had 120 possessions and the subsequent 3 games all had 121 possessions. Pace is part of defense.
