TEAM STATS

Possession

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 19 of our 49 misses = 38.8%
They rebounded 14 of their 35 misses = 40.0%

Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)
We got 19 points on 19 O-Rebs = 1.000 points/O-reb
They got 13 points on 14 O-Rebs = 0.929 points/O-reb

Unforced Turnovers
(Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers)
We had 7 turnovers – 2 steals = 5 unforced
They had 13 turnovers – 9 steals = 4 unforced

Points per Takeaway
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)
We had 9 points from 13 takeaways = 0.692 points/takeaway
They had 9 points from 7 takeaways = 1.286 points/takeaway

Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeaway: [Second Chance Point + Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 28 points in 32 unsettled situations = 0.875 points
They had 22 points in 21 unsettled situations = 1.048 points

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 40 + 13 = 53
They had 44 + 7 = 51

Hustle Stats
One of the radio sponsors gives an award to the team that had the most “hustle stats”, which they define as rebounds + steals + blocks. I decided to keep track of that, too:
We had 40 + 9 + 5 = 54
They had 44 + 2 + 6 = 52

Scoring

Shooting
(Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 19 for 47 on twos, (40.4%), 5 for 23 on threes (21.7%) and 12 for 19 on frees (62.3%)
They were 17 for 30 on twos, (56.7%), 9 for 29 on threes (31.0%) and 14 for 16 on frees (87.5%)
Combined percentages were: 1244 (404 + 217 + 623) vs. 1752 (567 + 310 + 875) = -508

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum”
POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made
OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots)
TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, two point jumpers from outside the paint, FBP = fast break points
POTO= points off turnovers

We had 30 PIP, 23 POP, 15 OL, 8 TZ, 9 POTO, 6 FBP
They had 32 PIP, 29 POP, 27 OL, 2 TZ, 9 POTO, 6 FBP

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 6 FBP in 33 opportunities (18.2%)
They scored 6 FBP in 38 opportunities (15.8%)

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 29 FCP and 19 SCP
They had 42 FCP and 13 SCP

Last Possessions
(Points scored on the last full possession of a half, a game or an overtime period.)
We scored 2 points
They scored 2 points

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 53 points and our bench scored 12 points
Their starters scored 71 points and their bench scored 4 points

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 12 of our 24 field goals = 50.0%
They assisted 16 of their 26 field goals = 61.5%

Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 65 points in 67 possessions = 0.970 points/ possession
They scored 75 points in 66 possessions = 1.136 points/possession
It was a 133 possession game.

Team Shooting Efficiency

(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)

We scored 65 points, missed 46 field goals and 7 missed free throws = net 12
They scored 75 points, missed 33 field goals and 2 missed free throws = net 40

(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)

We scored 65 on 47 two point attempts, 23 three point attempts and 19 free throw attempts = 69 of a possible 182 points = 35.7% of possible points scored.
They scored 75 on 30 two point attempts, 29 three point attempts and 16 free throw attempts = 49 of a possible 163 points = 46.0% of possible points scored.

Breakdown by Quarters
(Points scored between the beginning of the game and the 10 minute mark of the first half, then halftime, then the 10 minute mark of the second half, the end of regulation and then overtime of there was one)

14-11, 20-18, 18-27, 13-19

Fouls

(Two point shots and free throws attempted per times fouled.)
We attempted 47 two point shots, attempted 19 free throws and were fouled 16 times = 2.94; 1.19
They attempted 30 two point shots, attempted 16 free throws and were fouled 16 times = 1.88; 1.00
They were more likely to get calls when attempting two point shots but we got more free throws per foul by a very small margin.

Comments

- RJ Barret had 31 NP in this game. No SU player has had more than 16 in the last three games.

- We’ve had “no tacos” for six games in a row.

- Two point shots should normally be made at something close to a 50% level. These two teams were 19 for 53 inside the arc: 35.58%.

- JB often points out that Coach K uses a bench as short as his, maybe more so. Our bench out-scored theirs 12-4, (after it had out-scored Louisville 22-4). But our starters got out-scored for only the 6th time this season, 53-71.

Per the board - Frank Howard lost us this game before he was even born

Battle with 0 net points, ouch. I didn't think it was quite as bad as that, but pretty tough to win when your top player has an off night playing Duke.

He led us with 16 points but that was totally negated by 13 missed field goals and 3 missed free throws. He had just 3 rebounds, 1 assists, 0 steals and 0 blocks, which were offset by four fouls. At least he didn't have any turnovers.
