I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.)
Net Points
(points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls)
Average net points/40 by position, (based on averaging 20+ minutes per game), since the 1980-81 season:

Benny Williams +17NP in 30 minutes = +34NP in 305 minutes = +4.5NP/40 for season
Bourama Sidibie +15NP in 26 minutes = +31NP in 88 minutes = +14.1NP/40 for season
Joe Girard +8NP in 34 minutes = +332NP in 968 minutes = +13.7NP/40 for season
John Bol Ajak +2NP in 13 minutes = +10NP in 53 minutes = +7.5NP/40 for season
Cole Swider +2NP in 13 minutes = +369NP in 992 minutes = +14.9NP/40 for season
Frank Anselem +1NP in 12 minutes = +95NP in 362 minutes = +10.5NP/40 for season

Buddy Boeheim 23 points – 11mfg – 0mft = +12
Scoring Efficiency
(Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points)
Bourama Sidbie 11 points of 11 = 100.0%
My Man
(Who played the most minutes?)
Buddy Boeheim 38 minutes
TEAM STATS
Possession
Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 10 of our 31 misses = 32.3%
They rebounded 17 of their 32 misses = 53.1%
Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)
We got 16 points on 10 O-Rebs = 1.600 points/O-Reb
They got 17 points on 17 O-Rebs = 1.000 points/O-Reb
Points per Takeover
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)
We had 7 points from 6 takeovers = 1.167 points/takeaway
They had 15 points from 7 takeovers = 2.140 points/takeaway
Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeover: [Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 23 points in 16 unsettled situations = 1.4375 points/situation
They had 32 points in 24 unsettled situations = 1.333 points/situation
Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 25 + 6 = 31
They had 38 + 7 = 45
Scoring
Shooting
(Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 24 for 40 on twos, (60.0%), 5 for 19 on threes (26.3%) and 9 for 10 on frees (90.0%)
They were 20 for 33 on twos, (60.6%), 15 for 32 on threes (46.9%) and 12 for 17 on frees (70.6%)
Points
(PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum”
POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made
OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots)
TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint)
FT = Free Throws
We had 36 PIP, 27 POP, 15 OL, 12 TZ, 9 FT
They had 40 PIP, 45 POP, 45 OL, 0 TZ, 12 FT
Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 2 FBP in 20 opportunities (10.0%)
They scored 10 FBP in 27 opportunities (37.0%)
First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 45 FCP and 16 SCP
They had 58 FCP and 17 SCP
Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 43 points and our bench scored 29 points.
Their starters scored 78 points and their bench scored 19 points.
Efficiency
Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 13 of our 29 field goals = 44.8%
They assisted 26 of their 35 field goals = 74.3%
Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 72 points in 61 possessions = 1.180 points/ possession
They scored 97 points in 62 possessions = 1.565 points/possession
It was a 123-possession game.
If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:
We scored 72 points in 64 possessions = 1.125 points/ possession
They scored 97 points in 73 possessions = 1.329 points/possession
Team Shooting Efficiency
(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)
We scored 72 points, missed 30 field goals and missed 1 free throws = net +41
They scored 97 points, missed 30 field goals and missed 5 free throws = net +62
(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)
We scored 72 on 40 two-point attempts, 19 three-point attempts and 10 free throw attempts = 72 of a possible 185 points = 38.9% of possible points scored.
They scored 97 on 33 two-point attempts, 32 three-point attempts and 17 free throw attempts = 97 of a possible 179 points = 54.2% of possible points scored.
Fouls
(Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.)
We attempted 40 two-point shots and were fouled 15 times = 2.67
They attempted 33 two-point shots and were fouled 14 times = 2.36
Comments:
- Benny Williams doubled his season net points tonight and Bourama Sidibe almost did.
- Frank Anselem has played 35 minutes in the last two games without attempting a field goal.
- Duke was the first team in any of our games this season to successfully rebound over 50% of their missed shots. They got 53% of them We’d managed 43% against Virginia. However it got them only one more second chance point than we had. We kept defending even when they got the ball again.
- Where they hurt us was scoring 15 points off our 7 turnovers when we were getting just 7 from their 6. After being +10 in turnovers vs. Georgia Tech in an overtime win we are -1 in the two losses since because we’ve only forced 13. Takeaways are a big part of our gameplan when we are playing well.
- Amazingly, considered the caliber of Duke’s big men compared to ours, we were out-shot on two pointers only 60-61% and out-score din the paint only 36-40. We lost this game on the perimeter.
- It was great for our bench to contribute a whopping 29 points, (our previous high was 16 against Lafayette and Brown). It was the first time all year we’ve won this stat. The only game in which we didn’t lose it previously was the second Pittsburgh game, in which neither team got a single point from their bench.
- Unfortunately, our starters got outscored 43-78, only the fourth time that had happened and easily the biggest margin, (we were -17 at Duke, -11 at Pitt and -2 at Notre Dame).
- I know assists can be misleading but Duke had 26 of them to our 13. And with our shooters, that’s really not misleading.
