I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.)
Net Points
(points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls)

Joe Girard +15NP in 40 minutes = +370NP in 1080 minutes = +13.7NP/40 for season
Symir Torrence +13NP in 40 minutes = +124NP in 386 minutes = +12.8NP/40 for season
Frank Anselem +6NP in 23 minutes = +131NP in 459 minutes = +11.4NP/40 for season
Cole Swider +5NP in 38 minutes = +436NP in 1140 minutes = +15.3NP/40 for season

Frank Anselem 6 points of 10 = 60.0%
My Man
(Who played the most minutes?)
Jimmy Boeheim, Joe Girard and Symir Torrence 40 minutes
TEAM STATS
Possession
Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 16 of our 43 misses = 37.2%
They rebounded 16 of their 39 misses = 41.0%
Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)
We got 11 points on 16 O-Rebs = 0.688 points/O-Reb
They got 23 points on 16 O-Rebs = 1.438 points/O-Reb
Points per Takeover
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)
We had 12 points on 9 takeovers = 1.333 points/takeaway
They had 16 points from 11 takeovers = 1.455 points/takeaway
Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeover: [Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 23 points in 25 unsettled situations = 0.920 points/situation
They had 39 points in 27 unsettled situations = 1.444 points/situation
Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 39 + 9 = 48
They had 43 + 11= 54
Scoring
Shooting
(Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 14 for 36 on twos, (38.9%), 13 for 31 on threes (41.9%) and 12 for 15 on frees (80.0%)
They were 21 for 35 on twos, (60.0%), 11 for 32 on threes (34.4%) and 13 for 18 on frees (72.2%)
Points
(PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum”
POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made
OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots)
TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint)
FT = Free Throws
We had 14 PIP, 53 POP, 39 OL, 14 TZ, 12 FT
They had 40 PIP, 35 POP, 33 OL, 2 TZ, 13 FT
Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 7 FBP in 34 opportunities (20.6%)
They scored 13 FBP in 42 opportunities (31.0%)
First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 49 FCP and 11 SCP
They had 39 FCP and 23 SCP
Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 73 points and our bench scored 6 points.
Their starters scored 69 points and their bench scored 19 points.
Efficiency
Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 18 of our 27 field goals = 66.7%
They assisted 24 of their 32 field goals = 75.0%
Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 79 points in 69 possessions = 1.145 points/ possession
They scored 88 points in 69 possessions = 1.275 points/possession
It was a 138-possession game.
If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:
We scored 79 points in 74 possessions = 1.068 points/ possession
They scored 88 points in 76 possessions = 1.158 points/possession
Team Shooting Efficiency
(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)
We scored 79 points, missed 40 field goals and missed 3 free throws = net +36
They scored 88 points, missed 35 field goals and missed 5 free throws = net +48
(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)
We scored 79 on 36 two-point attempts, 31 three-point attempts and 15 free throw attempts = 79 of a possible 180 points = 43.9% of possible points scored.
They scored 88 on 35 two-point attempts, 32 three-point attempts and 18 free throw attempts = 88 of a possible 184 points = 47.8% of possible points scored.
Fouls
(Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.)
We attempted 36 two-point shots and were fouled 9 times = 4.00
They attempted 35 two-point shots and were fouled 16 times = 2.19
Comments:
- We wound up with 8 guys who played at least 100 minutes and averaged 10NP per 40. Last year we had 7. In 2018 and 2019 we had only 5.
- Per the averages posted at the top, Joe Girard and Buddy Boeheim were slightly above average SU guards and Jesse Edwards was an above average SU center. Cole Swider and Jimmy Boeheim were a bit short of what we expect from our forwards. If you add up their NP40 they come to 78.8 while the historical averages total 79.9. We were almost average.
- We finally became the three point shooting team we envisaged in these last four games: 10/25, 11/25, 11/28 and 13/31, a combined 45 for 109, (41%). Our opposition in those games shot 30/111, (27%).
- This was the 6th consecutive game in which the opposition was more likely to draw a foul, (on a two point shot), than we were. It’s been true in 14 of 22 ACC games.
