TEAM STATS

Possession

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 21 of their 50 misses = 42.0%
They rebounded 12 of our 26 misses = 46.2%

Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)
We got 23 points on 21 O-Rebs = 1.095 points/O-Reb
They got 18 points on 12 O-Rebs = 1.500 points/O-Reb

Unforced Turnovers
(Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers)
We had 10 turnovers – 6 steals = 4 unforced
They had 19 turnovers – 8 steals = 11 unforced

Points per Takeover
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)
We had 22 points from 19 takeovers = 1.158 points/takeaway
They had 13 points from 10 takeovers = 1.300 points/takeaway

Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeover: [Second Chance Point s+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 45 points in 40 unsettled situations = 1.125 points
They had 31 points in 22 unsettled situations = 1.409 points

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 35 + 19 = 54
They had 41 + 10 = 51

Hustle Stats
One of the radio sponsors gives an award to the team that had the most “hustle stats”, which they define as rebounds + steals + blocks. I decided to keep track of that, too:
We had 35 + 8 + 4 = 47
They had 41 + 6 + 5= 52

Scoring

Shooting
(Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 21 for 44 on twos, (47.7%), 6 for 26 on threes (23.1%) and 28 for 37 on frees (75.7%)
They were 25 for 37 on twos, (67.6%), 6 for 17 on threes (35.3%) and 29 for 33 on frees (87.9%)
Combined percentages were: 1465 (477 + 231 + 757) vs. 1908 (676 + 353 + 879) = +443

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum”
POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made
OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots)
TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint)
FBP = fast break points
POTO= points off turnovers

We had 38 PIP, 22 POP, 18 OL, 4 TZ, 22 POTO, 25 FBP
They had 44 PIP, 24 POP, 18 OL, 6 TZ, 13 POTO, 22 FBP

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 25 FBP in 26 opportunities (96.2%)
They scored 22FBP in 40 opportunities (55.0%)

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 12 FCP and 23 SCP
They had 38 FCP and 18 SCP

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 81 points and our bench scored 7 points
Their starters scored 70 points and their bench scored 27 points

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 13 of our 27 field goals = 48.1%
They assisted 19 of their 31 field goals = 61.3%

Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 88 points in 77 possessions = 1.257 points/ possession
They scored 91 points in 77 possessions = 1.423 points/possession
It was a 154 possession game.

If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:
We scored 88 points in 88 possessions = 1.000 points/ possession
They scored 91 points in 70 possessions = 1.386 points/possession

Team Shooting Efficiency

(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)

We scored 88 points, missed 43 field goals and missed 9 free throws = net +36
They scored 91 points, missed 23 field goals and missed 4 free throws = net +64

(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)

We scored 88 on 44 two point attempts, 26 three point attempts and 37 free throw attempts = 88 of a possible 203 points = 43.3% of possible points scored.
They scored 97 on 37 two point attempts, 33 three point attempts and 33 free throw attempts = 97 of a possible 206 points = 47.1% of possible points scored.

Breakdown by Quarters
(Points scored between the beginning of the game and the 10 minute mark of the first half, then halftime, then the 10 minute mark of the second half, the end of regulation and then overtime of there was one)

19-14, 17-26, 19-27, 33-30

Fouls

(Two point shots and free throws attempted per times fouled.)
We attempted 44 two point shots, attempted 37 free throws and were fouled 29 times = 1.52; 1.28
They attempted 37 two point shots, attempted 33 free throws and were fouled 25 times = 1.48; 1.32
They were more likely to get calls when attempting two point shots and got more shots per foul but the difference was minimal.

Comments

- The offensive rebounding in this game was amazing. The two teams grabbed 33 of their 76 misses, 43.4%. To put that in perspective, only four teams prior to this game in SU games had rebounded 40% of their misses: SU against Colgate and Cornell and Penn State and Notre Dame against us.

- How did we have 25 fast break points in 26 ‘opportunities’ and how did both teams have a total of 47 fast break points in 66 opportunities? There was one game we’ve had this season with numbers like that. Oklahoma State had 35 FBP in 25 opps while we had 16 in 23 for a total of 51 in 48. What created such high percentages? It’s because there’s a fourth source of opportunities: the press. Duke came out with a full court press and we ended the game with one. This created many more opportunities than either team would normally have had and both took plenty of advent age of it.

- It’s a good thing that we had a lot of fast break points, second chance points, points off turnovers and free throws because we were killed 12-38 in the opening half court sets, (First Chance Points).

- Our starters out-scored theirs, (including Carey) 81-70 but that’s because they played 175 minutes to 135. Their bench, who played 65 minutes, out-scored ours, who played 25 minutes, 27-7.

- The average rate of two point attempts to fouls for the season is 1.89 so the refs in this game (81/54 = 1.50) were free with the whistles in this one, despite missing the “crowning” of Quincy Guerrier.
