(I was working on this today but couldn't finish by game time, (fighting the flu has slowed me down). When tonight's game got out of hand I decided to finish it and get it posted as the Net Points portion is my double-check on the Net Points numbers I put in the "Upside post". This does not include tonight's game which was played in December and will be part of the Net Points Etc. post I will do a month from now.)

In past years I made a report called “Net Points, etc.” after each game. I’ve decided to try to find ways to cut back on the time I spent doing these posts. I’ve decided to do them once a month rather than after each game.

Again, the ‘net points’ (NP) formula is to add up all the positives in the box scores for each player: points (p), rebounds (r), assists (a), steals (s) and blocks (b) and subtract the negatives: missed field goals (mfg), missed free throws (mft), turnovers (to) and personal fouls (pf). In addition to NP, I provide offensive efficiency (OE) and floor game (FG). OE is p – (mfg + mft), the points you are producing minus the missed shots you are making trying to produce them. FG is NP – OE. What are you doing for – or to- your team other than the attempts to score points. These numbers are all per 40 minutes of play. I also offer the average minutes per the number of games the player has played. Only recruited players are listed. Walk-ons, even if they get scholarships, are not. Players are listed by average minutes played per game.

TEAM STATS

Some old favorites:

Unsettled Situations
[Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 137 points in 143 unsettled situations = 0.958 points/situation
They had 124 points in 108 unsettled situations = 1.157 points/situation
We’ve created more unsettled situations but taken less advantage of them. That’s largely about guard play.

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 259 + 58 = 317
They had 203 + 58 = 261
We’ve won the battle of the boards and have had the ball more than our opposition.

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 64 FBP in 221 opportunities (29.0%)
They scored 84 FBP in 223 opportunities (37.7%)
This is the saddest stat. we were once the equivalent of the Showtime Lakers in college basketball. This year we were 2-22 fast break points against Colgate and 13-23 vs. Cornell. And Red said he wanted to bring back the Orange running game.

First Chance Points
(First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made)
We had 486 – 67 – 64 – 96 = 259 FCP
They had 470 - 38 – 84 – 97 = 251 FCP
This is about how teams are performing in the initial sets of a possession. So far not a big gap.

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 89 of our 177 field goals = 50.3%
They assisted 80 of their 167 field goals = 47.9%
Assists are given for jump shots more than anything else We haven’t been a good jump shooting team but Lamkin and Davis are exceptional passing big men.

Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:
We scored 398 points in 466 possessions = 0.854 points/ possession
They scored 376 points in 429 possessions = 0.876 points/possession
Both teams are ;eavign a lot of meat on the bone.

Team Shooting Efficiency
We scored 486 points on 276 two-point attempts, 122 three-point attempts and 143 free throw attempts = 486 of a possible 1,061 points = 45.8% of possible points scored.
They scored 470 points on 214 two-point attempts, 162 three-point attempts and 117 free throw attempts = 470 of a possible 1,031 points = 46.8% of possible points scored.
Driving to the basket and running increases your efficiency, even if they are two-point shots.

Fouls
(Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.)
We attempted 226 two-point shots and were fouled 139 times = 1.63
They attempted 214 two-point shots and were fouled 88 times = 2.43
If there is a bias against us it sure doesn’t show up in the numbers.
