I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.) Net Points (points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls) Average net points/40 by position, (based on averaging 20+ minutes per game), since the 1980-81 season: Centers 18.6; Power Forwards: 18.4; Small Forwards: 16.1, Shooting Guards: 13.3; Point Guards: 13.5 Cole Swider +35NP in 28 minutes = +431NP in 1102 minutes = +15.6NP/40 for season Frank Anselem +25NP in 31 minutes = +125NP in 436 minutes = +11.5NP/40 for season Symir Torrence +21NP in 29 minutes = +111NP in 346 minutes = +12.8NP/40 for season Jimmy Boeheim +14NP in 22 minutes = +380NP in 1083 minutes = +14.0NP/40 for season Buddy Boeheim +12NP in 33 minutes = +437NP in 1212 minutes = +14.4NP/40 for season Joe Girard +10NP in 32 minutes = +355NP in 1040 minutes = +13.7NP/40 for season Chaz Owens +2NP in 3 minutes = +5NP in 10 minutes = +20.0NP/40 for season John Bol Ajak +1NP in 6 minutes = +7NP in 60 minutes = +4.7NP/40 for season Bourama Sidibie 0NP in 4 minutes = +48NP in 132 minutes = +14.5NP/40 for season DNP coach’s decision Injured or ill and couldn’t play Jesse Edwards 0NP in 0 minutes = +352NP in 673 minutes = +20.9NP/40 for season Benny Williams 0NP in 0 minutes = +31NP in 313 minutes = +4.0NP/40 for season Suspended None Redshirting None Out for the year None Left Team None Awards Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog) (Points plus assists) Cole Swider 28 points and 0 assists = 28 Shooting Efficiency (Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts) Cole Swider 28 points – 6mfg – 0mft = +22 Scoring Efficiency (Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points) Cole Swider 28 points of 42 = 66.7% My Man (Who played the most minutes?) Buddy Boeheim 33 minutes TEAM STATS Possession Rebounding (Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that) We rebounded 15 of our 37 misses = 40.5% They rebounded 13 of their 50 misses = 26.0% Effective Offensive Rebounding (Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds) We got 22 points on 15 O-Rebs = 1.154 points/O-Reb They got 15 points on 13 O-Rebs = 1.500 points/O-Reb Points per Takeover (Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had) We had 12 points on 8 takeovers = 1.500 points/takeaway They had 8 points from 7 takeovers = 1.143 points/takeaway Unsettled Situations (Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeover: [Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers) We had 34 points in 23 unsettled situations = 1.478 points/situation They had 23 points in 20 unsettled situations = 1.150 points/situation Manufactured Possessions (One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers) We had 52 + 8 = 60 They had 35 + 7 = 42 Scoring Shooting (Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws) We were 27 for 46 on twos, (58.7%), 11 for 28 on threes (39.3%) and 9 for 12 on frees (75.0%) They were 20 for 43 on twos, (46.5%), 2 for 25 on threes (8.0%) and 11 for 16 on frees (68.8%) Points (PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum” POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots) TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint) FT = Free Throws We had 50 PIP, 37 POP, 33 OL, 4 TZ, 9 FT They had 36 PIP, 10 POP, 6 OL, 4 TZ, 11 FT Fast Break Percentage (FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals) We scored 33 FBP in 48 opportunities (68.75%) They scored 13 FBP in 34 opportunities (38.2%) First Chance/Second Chance (FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.) We had 32 FCP and 22 SCP They had 18 FCP and 15 SCP Starters/Bench (Total points – bench points = starters points) Our starters scored 72 points and our bench scored 24 points. Their starters scored 29 points and their bench scored 28 points. Efficiency Assists (The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted) We assisted 23 of our 38 field goals = 60.5% They assisted 16 of their 22 field goals = 72.7% Team Offensive Possession Efficiency (Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions) We scored 96 points in 72 possessions = 1.333 points/ possession They scored 57 points in 71 possessions = 0.803 points/possession It was a 143-possession game. If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession: We scored 96 points in 80 possessions = 1.200 points/ possession They scored 57 points in 76 possessions = 0.750 points/possession Team Shooting Efficiency (Points minus missed field goals and free throws) We scored 96 points, missed 36 field goals and missed 3 free throws = net +57 They scored 57 points, missed 36 field goals and missed 5 free throws = net +16 (Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot) We scored 96 on 46 two-point attempts, 28 three-point attempts and 12 free throw attempts = 96 of a possible 188 points = 51.1% of possible points scored. They scored 57 on 43 two-point attempts, 25 three-point attempts and 16 free throw attempts = 57 of a possible 177 points = 32.2% of possible points scored. Fouls (Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.) We attempted 46 two-point shots and were fouled 11 times = 4.18 They attempted 43 two-point shots and were fouled 14 times = 3.07 Comments: - Cole Swider had 35NP, a season high for the team. His NP/40 rose from 14.7 to 15.6, +0.9 points in the 32nd game of the season. - Frank Anselem’s NP/40 rose from 9.6 to 11.5, +1.9 in the 32nd game of the season. - Symir Torrence’s NP per 40 rose from 11.4 to 12.8, an increase of 1.4 in the 32nd game of the season. We seem to have had a lot of good players on this team. - We went from going 9 for 35 on twos, (25.7%) Saturday to 27 for 46 (.587) today. - Was it all our defense? In these last two games our opponents are 5 for 43 from the arc, (11.6%). Some of it had to be. - Our 50 points in the paint were the most of the season, beating the 44 we had against Lafayette. - Our 33 fast break points were also the most we’ve had this season, topping the 24 we had against Lafayette and Indiana, (a double overtime game). - Syracuse, which plays a short rotation is always going to win the “starter’s points” stat over Florida State, which sending waves of players. And a 39 point game is going to produce a lot of bench scoring. Still, an edge of 72-29 in starter’s scoring is pretty impressive. - Unusually, we had more assists than our opposition, 23-16. But we still had a lower percentage because we scored 38 baskets to the Noles’ 22 - Both teams missed the same number of field goals: 36. You can win some bets on that one. And the Noles scored 2 more points from the line. They had just one more turnover. Why was it a blow out? Because we were +15 on the boards and hit nine more three pointers.
