I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.) This is limited to recruited scholarship players only. Net Points (points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls) Average net points/40 by position, (based on averaging 20+ minutes per game), since the 1980-81 season: Centers 18.6; Power Forwards: 18.4; Small Forwards: 16.1, Shooting Guards: 13.3; Point Guards: 13.5 Joe Girard +25NP in 38 minutes = +299NP in 856 minutes = +14.0NP/40 for season Jesse Edwards +23NP in 37 minutes = +495NP in 786 minutes = +25.2NP/40 for season Judah Mintz +13NP in 34 minutes = +290NP in 796 minutes = +14.6NP/40 for season Maliq Brown +11NP in 22 minutes = +216NP in 440 minutes = +19.6NP/40 for season Chris Bell +2NP in 34 minutes = +91NP in 485 minutes = +7.5NP/40 for season Benny Williams +1NP in 18 minutes = +138NP in 509 minutes = +10.8NP/40 for season Justin Taylor -1NP in 6 minutes = +108NP in 413 minutes = +10.5NP/40 for season Mounir Hima -1NP in 3 minutes = +50NP in 181 minutes = +11.0NP/40 for season Symir Torrence -3NP in 8 minutes = +108NP in 296 minutes = +14.6NP/40 for season DNP coach’s decision John Bol Ajak 0NP in 0 minutes = +34NP in 120 minutes = +11.3NP/40 for season Quadir Copeland 0NP in 0 minutes = +25NP in 100 minutes = +10.0NP/40 for season Injured or ill and couldn’t play None Suspended None Redshirting Peter Carey 0NP in 0 minutes = -2NP in 20 minutes = -4.0NP/40 for season Out for the year None Left Team Awards Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog) (Points plus assists) Joe Girard 26 points and 2 assists = 28 Shooting Efficiency (Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts) Joe Girard 26 points – 7mfg – 1mft = +18 Scoring Efficiency (Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points) Joe Girard 26 points of 44 = 59.0% My Man (Who played the most minutes?) Joe Girard 38 minutes TEAM STATS Possession Rebounding (Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that) We rebounded 11 of our 34 misses = 32.3% They rebounded 11 of their 39 misses = 28.2% Unsettled Situations [Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers) We had 38 points in 23 unsettled situations = 1.652 points/situation They had 28 points in 23 unsettled situations = 1.217 points/situation Manufactured Possessions (One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers) We had 39 + 12 = 51 They had 34 + 12 = 46 Scoring Shooting (Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws) We were 22 for 41 on twos, (53.7%), 6 for 21 on threes (28.6%) and 14 for 17 on frees (82.4%) They were 17 for 32 on twos, (53.1%), 9 for 35 on threes (25.7%) and 6 for 8 on frees (75.0%) Points (PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum” POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots) TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint) FT = Free Throws We had 40 PIP, 22 POP, 18 OL, 4 TZ, 14 FT They had 34 PIP, 27 POP, 27 OL, 0 TZ, 6 FT Fast Break Percentage (FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals) We scored 9 FBP in 37 opportunities (24.3%) They scored 6 FBP in 34 opportunities (17.6%) First Chance/Second Chance (FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.) We had 34 FCP and 19 SCP They had 43 FCP and 12 SCP Starters/Bench (Total points – bench points = starters points) Our starters scored 74 points and our bench scored 2 points. Their starters scored 48 points and their bench scored 19 points. Efficiency Assists (The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted) We assisted 14 of our 28 field goals = 50.0% They assisted 21 of their 26 field goals = 80.8% Team Offensive Possession Efficiency (Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions) We scored 76 points in 69 possessions = 1.101 points/ possession They scored 67 points in 70 possessions = 0.944 points/possession It was a 139-possession game. If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession: We scored 76 points in 70 possessions = 1.088 points/ possession They scored 67 points in 71 possessions = 0.944 points/possession Team Shooting Efficiency (Points minus missed field goals and free throws) We scored 76 points, missed 34 field goals and missed 3 free throws = net +39 They scored 67 points, missed 41 field goals and missed 2 free throws = net +24 (Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot) We scored 76 on 41 two-point attempts, 21 three-point attempts and 17 free throw attempts = 76 of a possible 162 points = 46.9% of possible points scored. They scored 67 on 32 two-point attempts, 35 three-point attempts and 8 free throw attempts = 67 of a possible 177 points = 37.8% of possible points scored. Fouls (Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.) We attempted 41 two-point shots and were fouled 15 times = 2.73 They attempted 32 two-point shots and were fouled 14 times = 2.29 Comments: - In the box score, Chris Bell had a bad game: +2NP in 34 minutes. That’s because the box score is mostly about offense: Chris had a terrible shooting game, (1 for 9 from three), but played very well in other respects. JB’s comments seemed to have lit a fire under him. But his primary skill is supposed to be shooting and he’s got to better than 1 for 9, especially when he got so many wide open shots. We could have broken this game open a lot earlier than we did. - Joe Girard became the first player other than Jesse Edwards to win all of the awards in a game. - Did that look like it was going to be a game where we had 19 second chance points to their 12? - Both teams had the same number and type of ‘unsettled situations’ = offensive reboudns, (11) and turnovers (12). We scored 38 points to their 28 in those situations and that was the one more than the margin of victory.
