I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.) This is limited to recruited scholarship players only.
Net Points
(points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls)
Average net points/40 by position, (based on averaging 20+ minutes per game), since the 1980-81 season:
Centers 18.6; Power Forwards: 18.4; Small Forwards: 16.1, Shooting Guards: 13.3; Point Guards: 13.5
Jesse Edwards +26NP in 34 minutes = +593NP in 966 minutes = +24.6NP/40 for season
Judah Mintz +20NP in 38 minutes = +369NP in 996 minutes = +14.8NP/40 for season
Benny Williams +19NP in 30 minutes = +190NP in 624 minutes = +12.0NP/40 for season
Maliq Brown +3NP in 19 minutes = +245NP in 548 minutes = +17.9NP/40 for season
Joe Girard +2NP in 33 minutes = +340NP in 1,029 minutes = +13.2NP/40 for season
Justin Taylor +1NP in 18 minutes = +113NP in 485 minutes = +9.3NP/40 for season
Symir Torrence 0NP in 18 minutes = +103NP in 322 minutes = +12.8NP/40 for season
Quadir Copeland -3NP in 6 minutes = +19NP in 158 minutes = +4.8NP/40 for season

Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog)
(Points plus assists)
Judah Mintz 23 points and 7 assists = 30
Shooting Efficiency
(Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts)
Jesse Edwards 18 points – 4mfg – 0mft = +14
Scoring Efficiency
(Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points)
Benny Williams 11 points of 15 = 73.3%
My Man
(Who played the most minutes?)
Judah Mintz 38 minutes
TEAM STATS
Possession
Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 5 of our 29 misses = 17.2%
They rebounded 10 of their 33 misses = 30.3%
Unsettled Situations
[Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 19 points in 14 unsettled situations = 1.357 points/situation
They had 27 points in 20 unsettled situations = 1.350 points/situation
Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 28 + 9 = 37
They had 34 + 10 = 44
Scoring
Shooting
(Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 23 for 39 on twos, (59.0%), 4 for 17 on threes (23.5%) and 18 for 20 on frees (90.0%)
They were 17 for 27 on twos, (63.0%), 18 for 40 on threes (45.0%) and 8 for 10 on frees (80.0%)
Points
(PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum”
POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made
OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots)
TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint)
FT = Free Throws
We had 42 PIP, 16 POP, 12 OL, 4 TZ, 18 FT
They had 28 PIP, 60 POP, 54 OL, 6 TZ, 8 FT
Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 17 FBP in 31 opportunities (54.8%)
They scored 17 FBP in 33 opportunities (57.5%)
First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 37 FCP and 4 SCP
They had 56 FCP and 15 SCP
Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 65 points and our bench scored 11 points.
Their starters scored 96 points and their bench scored 0 points.
Efficiency
Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 17 of our 27 field goals = 63.0%
They assisted 27 of their 35 field goals = 77.1%
Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 76 points in 71 possessions = 1.070 points/ possession
They scored 96 points in 71 possessions = 1.352 points/possession
It was a 142-possession game.
If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:
We scored 76 points in 66 possessions = 1.152 points/ possession
They scored 96 points in 72 possessions = 1.333 points/possession
Team Shooting Efficiency
(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)
We scored 76 points, missed 29 field goals and missed 2 free throws = net +45
They scored 96 points, missed 22 field goals and missed 2 free throws = net +62
(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)
We scored 76 on 39 two-point attempts, 40 three-point attempts and 10 free throw attempts = 76 of a possible 149 points = 51.1% of possible points scored.
They scored 96 on 27 two-point attempts, 17 three-point attempts and 20 free throw attempts = 96 of a possible 184 points = 52.2% of possible points scored.
Fouls
(Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.)
We attempted 39 two-point shots and were fouled 14 times = 2.79
They attempted 27 two-point shots and were fouled 11 times = 2.45
Comments:
- Every point for Tech was scored by their starters, who played 37-39 minutes each. JB must have envied Josh Pastner to have five guys he trusts to win the game for him.
- Benny Williams has had consecutive 20 and 19NP games. Will he be the star of next eyar’s team?
- Quadir Copeland is very athletic and has some skills but statistically he’s having a terrible, mostly because he can’t shoot.
- Judah Mintz had a great game with 30NP, (most since Joe Girard had 35 in the first Georgia Tech game). Imagine how well he would have done if his jump shot (1 for 6 from three) hadn’t turned into a pumpkin.
- Basically, they couldn’t stop our top 3 guys but we couldn’t stop their top 4 guys.
- We out-shot Duke, Clemson and Pittsburgh from three 44%-43% but they got off 143 attempts to our 67. Tech, which came in shooting 33%, shot 45% while we shot 23.5%. If we’d shot 44%, we would have had 7-8 three instead of 4.That would at least have made the final margin a little easier to swallow, even if the result wasn’t.
- The volume of three pointers we have to defend pulls apart our defense inside the arc. Duke shot 59% on two pointers, 69%, 59% and 62%. Bill Russell couldn’t cover both posts and both corners unless there was two of him.
- JB pointed out that a lot of those threes produce rebounds that go to the high post. Our failure to keep them out of the high post thus produces a lot of offensive rebounds for the other teams. The four teams we’ve lost to in this streak. That’s why the offensive rebounds have been 33-50.
- Tech had 60 ‘POP’, (points outside the paint), the second most of the season: #1 was Colgate 61.
- Both teams had 17 fast break points, a high total these days. The fact that we pressed for much of the game was factor in this. It speeds up the game, for better or worse.
- At least we were more competitive in the assists battle:
Duke 7/19 = 36.8% vs. 22/30 = 73.3%
Clemson 9/27 = 33.3% vs. 28/34 = 82.4%
Pittsburgh 13/28 = 46.4% vs. 27/32 = 84.4%
Georgia Tech 17/27 = 63.0% vs. 27/35 = 77.1%
The season averages have been 52.6 – 72.6%
