I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.)
Net Points
(points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls)
Average net points/40 by position, (based on averaging 20+ minutes per game), since the 1980-81 season:

Cole Swider +18NP in 42 minutes = +356NP in 940 minutes = +15.1NP/40 for season
Jimmy Boeheim +14NP in 44 minutes = +330NP in 942 minutes = +14.0NP/40 for season
Bourama Sidibie +9NP in 16 minutes = +11NP in 46 minutes = +9.6NP/40 for season
Joe Girard +8NP in 43 minutes = +326NP in 908 minutes = +14.2NP/40 for season
Frank Anselem +5NP in 29 minutes = +88NP in 327 minutes = +10.8NP/40 for season
Buddy Boeheim +3NP in 42 minutes = +360NP in 1017 minutes = +14.2NP/40 for season
Symir Torrence +1NP in 23 minutes = +88NP in 297 minutes = +11.9NP/40 for season
Benny Williams 0NP in 3 minutes = +17NP in 273 minutes = +2.5NP/40 for season
DNP coach’s decision
John Bol Ajak 0NP in 0 minutes = +8NP in 40 minutes = +8.0NP/40 for season
Chaz Owens 0NP in 0 minutes = +3NP in 5 minutes = +24.0NP/40 for season
Injured or ill and couldn’t play
Jesse Edwards 0NP in 0 minutes = +352NP in 673 minutes = +20.9NP/40 for season

Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog)
(Points plus assists)
Jimmy Boeheim 20 points and 1 assists = 21
Shooting Efficiency
(Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts)
Cole Swider 18 points – 8mfg – 0mft = +10
Scoring Efficiency
(Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points)
Cole Swider 18 points of 40 = 45.0%
My Man
(Who played the most minutes?)
Jimmy Boeheim 44 minutes
TEAM STATS
Possession
Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 14 of our 52 misses = 26.9%
They rebounded 14 of their 43 misses = 32.6%
Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)
We got 10 points on 14 O-Rebs = 0.714 points/O-Reb
They got 10 points on 14 O-Rebs = 0.714 points/O-Reb
Points per Takeover
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)
We had 14 points from 14 takeovers = 1.000 points/takeaway
They had 2 points from 4 takeovers = 0.500 points/takeaway
Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeover: [Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 24 points in 28 unsettled situations = 0.857 points/situation
They had 13 points in 28 unsettled situations = 0.464 points/situation
Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 43 + 14 = 57
They had 52 + 4 = 56
Scoring
Shooting
(Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 14 for 41on twos, (34.1%), 10 for 32 on threes (31.3%) and 16 for 22 on frees (72.7%)
They were 17 for 39 on twos, (43.6%), 9 for 27 on threes (33.3%) and 12 for 17 on frees (70.6%)
Points
(PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum”
POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made
OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots)
TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint)
FT = Free Throws
We had 20 PIP, 38 POP, 30 OL, 8 TZ, 16 FT
They had 34 PIP, 27 POP, 27 OL, 0 TZ, 12 FT
Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 12 FBP in 39 opportunities (30.8%)
They scored 14 FBP in 44 opportunities (31.8%)
First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 26 FCP and 10 SCP
They had 37 FCP and 10 SCP
Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 67 points and our bench scored 7 points.
Their starters scored 55 points and their bench scored 18 points.
Efficiency
Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 12 of our 24 field goals = 50.0%
They assisted 18 of their 26 field goals = 69.2%
Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 74 points in 73 possessions = 1.034 points/ possession
They scored 73 points in 74 possessions = 0.986 points/possession
It was a 147-possession game.
If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:
We scored 74 points in 83 possessions = 0.892 points/ possession
They scored 73 points in 71 possessions = 0.986 points/possession
Team Shooting Efficiency
(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)
We scored 74 points, missed 49 field goals and missed 6 free throws = net +19
They scored 73 points, missed 40 field goals and missed 5 free throws = net +28
(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)
We scored 74 on 41 two-point attempts, 32 three-point attempts and 22 free throw attempts = 74 of a possible 200 points = 37.0% of possible points scored.
They scored 73 on 39 two-point attempts, 27 three-point attempts and 17 free throw attempts = 73 of a possible 176 points = 41.5% of possible points scored.
Fouls
(Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.)
We attempted 39 two-point shots and were fouled 16 times = 2.24
They attempted 41 two-point shots and were fouled 16 times = 2.56
Comments:
- 9 of Bourama Sidibe’s 11 net points this year came last night – in 16 of his 46 minutes of play.
- Looking for a key stat? How about 4 turnovers in 45 minutes vs. 14 and 14 points off turnovers vs. 2 in an overtime game?
- People think of being ‘hot’ and ‘cold’ in terms of three pointers. But last night we were 14/41 on two point shots. We’ve had only one worse performance in that stat all season: VCU. We’ve bene under 40% on two point shots 7 times this year, including three of the last 4 games: The BC game where Jesse fouled out and got hurt, the Virginia tech game and this one. Without Jesse, the other team can go 5 on 4 defensively against our shooters and drivers.
- We had 12 fast break points, the most since we had 18 against Clemson ten games ago. Tech had 14, for most combined fast break points since then – except for the game at Boston College which reached 27 because BC had 18 fast break points.
