I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.) Net Points (points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls) Jesse Edwards +26NP in 39 minutes = +112NP in 185 minutes = +24.2NP/40 for season Buddy Boeheim +24NP in 50 minutes = +119NP in 269 minutes = +17.7NP/40 for season Joe Girard +18NP in 44 minutes = +101NP in 229 minutes = +17.6NP/40 for season Jimmy Boeheim +17NP in 47 minutes = +95NP in 235 minutes = +16.2NP/40 for season Cole Swider +5NP in 34 minutes = +75NP in 227 minutes = +13.2NP/40 for season Frank Anselem +4NP in 11 minutes = +25NP in 82 minutes = +12.2NP/40 for season Benny Williams 0NP in 19 minutes = +12NP in 122 minutes = +3.9NP/40 for season Symir Torrence -1NP in 6 minutes = +14NP in 87 minutes = +6.4NP/40 for season DNP coach’s decision John Bol Ajak 0NP in 0 minutes = +5NP in 10 minutes = +20.0NP/40 for season Chaz Owens 0NP in 0 minutes = 0NP in 0 minutes = 0.0NP/40 for season Injured and couldn’t play Bourama Sidibie 0NP in 0 minutes = 0NP in 0 minutes = 0.0NP/40 for season Suspended Redshirting None (that we know of) Out for the year None Left Team None Awards Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog) (Points plus assists) Buddy Boeheim 27 points and 8 assists = 35 Shooting Efficiency (Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts) Jesse Edwards 17 points – 0mfg – 0mft = +17 Scoring Efficiency (Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points) Jesse Edwards 17 points of 17 = 100.00% My Man (Who played the most minutes?) Buddy Boeheim 50 minutes TEAM STATS Possession Rebounding (Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that) We rebounded 8 of our 40 misses = 20.0% They rebounded 14 of their 37 misses = 37.8% Effective Offensive Rebounding (Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds) We got 14 points on 8 O-Rebs = 1.750 points/O-Reb They got 20 points on 14 O-Rebs = 1.429 points/O-Reb Points per Takeover (Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had) We had 33 points from 26 takeovers = 1.269 points/takeaway They had 11 points from 12 takeovers = 0.917 points/takeaway Unsettled Situations (Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeover: [Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers) We had 47 points in 34 unsettled situations = 1.382 points/situation They had 31 points in 26 unsettled situations = 1.192 points/situation Manufactured Possessions (One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers) We had 31 + 26 = 57 They had 46 + 12 = 58 Scoring Shooting (Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws) We were 23 for 39 on twos, (59.0%), 13 for 34 on threes (38.2%) and 27 for 34 on frees (79.4%) They were 27 for 42 on twos, (64.2%), 11 for 27 on threes (40.7%) and 23 for 31 on frees (74.2%) Points (PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum” POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots) TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint) FT = Free Throws We had 36 PIP, 49 POP, 39 OL, 10 TZ, 27 FT They had 48 PIP, 39 POP, 33 OL, 6 TZ, 23 FT Fast Break Percentage (FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals) We scored 24 FBP in 45 opportunities (53.3%) They scored 14 FBP in 55 opportunities (25.5%) First Chance/Second Chance (FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.) We had 53 FCP and 14 SCP They had 47 FCP and 20 SCP Starters/Bench (Total points – bench points = starters points) Our starters scored 106 points and our bench scored 6 points. Their starters scored 100 points and their bench scored 10 points. Efficiency Assists (The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted) We assisted 16 of our 36 field goals = 44.4% They assisted 26 of their 38 field goals = 68.4% Team Offensive Possession Efficiency (Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions) We scored 112 points in 93 possessions = 1.204 points/ possession They scored 110 points in 96 possessions = 1.146 points/possession It was a 189-possession game. If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession: We scored 112 points in 89 possessions = 1.256 points/ possession They scored 110 points in 84 possessions = 1.310 points/possession Team Shooting Efficiency (Points minus missed field goals and free throws) We scored 112 points, missed 37 field goals and missed 7 free throws = net +68 They scored 110 points, missed 31 field goals and missed 8 free throws = net +71 (Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot) We scored 112 on 39 two-point attempts, 34 three-point attempts and 34 free throw attempts = 112 of a possible 214 points = 52.3% of possible points scored. They scored 110 on 42 two-point attempts, 27 three-point attempts and 31 free throw attempts = 110 of a possible 196 points = 56.1% of possible points scored. Fouls (Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.) We attempted 39 two-point shots and were fouled 24 times = 1.625 They attempted 42 two-point shots and were fouled 24 times = 1.750 At this rate, if we’d attempted 42 two point shots, we would have drawn 26 fouls Comments: - Jesse Edwards has now led the team in NP for three games in a row and leads in NP per 40 on the season. Does that make him the best player on the team? Not necessarily. Being closer to the basket, bot vertically and horizontally, gives you an advantage in filling up the box score. Buddy Boeheim has to shoot from 10-30 feet with a guy assigned to be in his face and he’s farther from the rebounds. But if you ask the question this way it gets more interesting: who is having the biggest impact on these games? - Jesse was 10 for 10 on the night: 7 for 7 on field goals and 3 for 3 from the line. In those last three games, Jesse has scored 55 points while missing 8 shots: 3 field goals and 5 free throws. Buddy Boeheim has scored 67 points in those games but missed 35 shots. Jesse scored 55 of a possible 66 points, (if all his shots had fallen), in the three games, Buddy 67 of a possible 150. - Many things won this game but none moreso than getting 33 points off of turnovers, including 18 steals. But how often are we going to do that? - We hit a terrific 59% of our two point shots with 36 points in the paint, largely thanks to Jesse Edwards. But Indiana hit 64% with 48 PIP, thanks to Trayce Jackson-Davis after Auburn had hit 59.5% and 42 PIP, thanks to Jabari Smith. I hope we don’t see too many studs like that the rest of the year. - One of the things we used to counter that was to beat the other team down the court. We got a season-high 24 fast break points to 14. Push it! - Both team’s starting line-ups hit the century mark: 106-100 - The two teams combined to score 222 of 410 possible points, (if every shot had gone in). That’s 54%. In the VCU game, the two teams combined scored 122 of 312 possible points, (39%). That’s the difference between entertaining and ugly.
