TEAM STATS

Possession

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 11 of our 36 misses = 30.6%
They rebounded 12 of their 37 misses = 32.4%

Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)
We got 8 points on 11 O-Rebs = 0.727 points/O-reb
They got 15 points on 12 O-Rebs = 1.250 points/O-reb

Unforced Turnovers
(Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers)
We had 16 turnovers – 10 steals = 6 unforced
They had 12 turnovers – 6 steals = 6 unforced

Points per Takeover
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)
We had 10 points from 12 takeovers = 0.833 points/takeaway
They had 14 points from 16 takeovers = 0.875 points/takeaway

Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeover: [Second Chance Point s+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 18 points in 23 unsettled situations = 0.783 points
They had 29 points in 28 unsettled situations = 1.036 points

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 36 + 12 = 48
They had 37 + 16 = 53

Hustle Stats
One of the radio sponsors gives an award to the team that had the most “hustle stats”, which they define as rebounds + steals + blocks. I decided to keep track of that, too:
We had 36 + 2 + 6 = 44
They had 37 + 1 + 10 = 48

Scoring

Shooting
(Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 13 for 31 on twos, (41.9%), 6 for 21 on threes (28.6%) and 10 for 15 on frees (66.7%)
They were 15 for 27 on twos, (55.6%), 11 for 34 on threes (32.4%) and 5 for 8 on frees (62.5%)
Combined percentages were: 1372 (419 + 286 + 667) vs. 1505 (556 + 324 + 625) = -133

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum”
POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made
OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots)
TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint)
FBP = fast break points
POTO= points off turnovers

We had 26 PIP, 18 POP, 18 OL, 0 TZ, 10 POTO, 12 FBP
They had 24 PIP, 39 POP, 33 OL, 6 TZ, 14 POTO, 5 FBP

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 12 FBP in 33 opportunities (36.4%)
They scored 5 FBP in 36 opportunities (13.9%)

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 24 FCP and 8 SCP
They had 43 FCP and 15 SCP

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 43 points and our bench scored 11 points
Their starters scored 56 points and their bench scored 8 points

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 13 of our 19 field goals = 68.4%
They assisted 17 of their 26 field goals = 65.4%

Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 54 points in 64 possessions = 0.844 points/ possession
They scored 68 points in 65 possessions = 1.046 points/possession
It was a 129 possession game.

If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:
We scored 54 points in 59 possessions = 0.915 points/ possession
They scored 68 points in 65 possessions = 1.046points/possession

Team Shooting Efficiency

(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)

We scored 54 points, missed 33 field goals and missed 5 free throws = net +16
They scored 68 points, missed 35 field goals and missed 3 free throws = net +30

(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)

We scored 54 on 31 two point attempts, 21 three point attempts and 15 free throw attempts = 54 of a possible 140 points = 38.6% of possible points scored.
They scored 68 on 27 two point attempts, 34 three point attempts and 8 free throw attempts = 68 of possible 164 points = 41.5% of possible points scored.

Breakdown by Quarters
(Points scored between the beginning of the game and the 10 minute mark of the first half, then halftime, then the 10 minute mark of the second half, the end of regulation and then overtime of there was one)

16-17, 13-13, 9-24, 16-14

Fouls

(Two point shots and free throws attempted per times fouled.)
We attempted 31 two point shots, attempted 15 free throws and were fouled 15 times = 2.06; 1.00
They attempted 27 two point shots, attempted 8 free throws and were fouled 13 times = 2.08; 0.62
We were more likely to get calls when attempting two point shots, (by a tiny margin), and got more shots per foul.

Comments

- The two highest NP per 40 are Jesse Edwards (+20.0) and Howard Washington (+17.9). that doesn’t make them the best players on the team but it suggests that they should be playing more. Washington is clearly better than Goodine at this point and Edwards could learn more on the job than he would get just from practice.

- As often happened, the winning team outshot the losing team badly inside the arc (56%-42%). The three point percent ages weren’t so far off (32%-29%) but a big factor was that we only got off 21 three pointers to Iowa’s 34. We are supposed to be a three point shooting team but we couldn’t get them off.

- We lost this game on shooting. POP was 18-39. We were 18-33 from the Outer Limits and 0-6 from the Twilight Zone. For the year are 144-102 in POP, 120-90 from the OL and 24-12 from the TZ when we win. When we lose its 85-102, 75-102, 10-18. Put the ball in the basket!

- The Hawkeyes scored 29 points in unsettled situations to our 18. That gap will almost always produce a victory.

- Against Okie State and Penn State were outscored those teams 48-38 in our initial sets, (first chance points), but in this game we got beat 24-43 there. When you are losing the initial sets and also the unsettled situations, you don’t have much of a chance.
