I’ve added so many things to my post-game “Net Points” posts over the years that it’s become a very long post to read and a longer one to do. I’ve decided to have separate posts for the numbers for a particular game and for the cumulative season totals. It’s the later that takes most of the time and lengthens the post so much. There was too much verbiage and too many numbers.

I’m still going to figure the season totals but I’ll post them at three different stages of the season: after the pre-conference schedule, after the conference schedule and after the post season. In the meantime, I’ll go with this stream-lined version of “Net Points, etc.” after each game, with numbers and commentary only for that game. That should make it both quicker to do and more digestible.

Team Stats:
(I’ve decide to put the team that won the stat in bold and ties in italics.)

POSSESSION

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)

We rebounded 15 of our 39 misses = 38.5%
They rebounded 7 of their 28 misses = 25.0%

Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)

We got 9 points on 15 O-Rebs = 0.600 points/O-reb
They got 10 points on 7 O-Rebs = 1.429 points/ O-reb

Unforced Turnovers
(Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers)

We had 17 turnovers – 4 steals = 3 unforced
They had 16 turnovers – 9 steals = 7 unforced

Points per Takeaway
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)

We had 16 points from 16 takeaways = 1.000 points/takeaway
They had 18 points from 17 takeaways = 1.059 points/takeaway

Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeaway: [Second Chance Point + Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)

We had 25 points in 31 unsettled situations = 0.806 points
They had 28 points in 24 unsettled situations = 1.167 points

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)

We had 36 + 16 = 52
They had 31 + 17= 48

Scoring

Shooting
(shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)

We were 12 for 29 on twos, (41.4%), 6 for 27 on threes (22.2%) and 18 for 26 on frees (69.2%)
They were 16 for 24 on twos, (66.7%), 11 for 31 on threes (35.5%) and 11 for 13 on frees (84.6%)

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP –free throws made, TREY: points from three point shots, TZ= Twilight Zone, which is POP – TREY, two point jumpers from outside the paint, FBP = fast break points POTO= points off turnovers)

We had 24 PIP, 22 POP, 18 TREY, 4 TZ, 4 FBP, 18 POTO
They had 28 PIP, 37 POP, 33 TREY, 4 TZ, 8 FBP, 16 POTO

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)

We had 29 FCP and 9 SCP
They had 47 FCP and 10 SCP

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)

Our starters scored 57 points and our bench scored 3 points
Their starters scored 74 points and their bench scored 2 points

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)

We assisted 9 of our 18 field goals = 50.0%
They assisted 22 of their 27 field goals = 81.5%

Team Offensive Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)

We scored 60 points in 70 possessions = 0.857 points/possession
They scored 76 points in 70 possessions = 1.086 points/ possession
It was a 140 possession game.

Breakdown by Quarters
(Points scored between the beginning of the game and the 10 minute mark of the first half, then halftime, then the 10 minute mark of the second half, the end of regulation and then overtime of there was one)

11-13, 10-22, 24-19, 15-22

Fouls
(Two point shots, points in paint and free throws attempted per times fouled.)

We attempted 29 two point shots, scored 24 points in the paint, attempted 26 free throws and were fouled 21 times = 1.38; 1.14; 1.24
They attempted 24 two point shots, scored 28 points in the paint, attempted 13 free throws and were fouled 16 times = 1.50; 1.75; 0.81

We were more likely to draw fouls calls when we got it inside and got more shooting fouls called.

Comments:

- The entire SU line-up had 33NP and so did Devonte’ Graham. The rest of Kansas’ team had 36NP.

- We’ve rebounded 43% of our misses this year while our option has rebounded only 25% of theirs.

- Kansas had a decided edge in taking advantage of offensive rebounds: 9/15 = 0.600 vs. 10/7 = 1.429.

- We had 13 unforced turnovers, (non-steals) to only 7 for Kansas. We have 53 on the eyar to 33 for the opposition.

- We’ve lost the last three games in First Chance Points by a combined 94-126. You make up for that with second chance points, fast breaks and getting to the line.

- The importance of depth: We won in bench points 3-2.

- The game was no called in a biased fashion but it was called a little tighter than we are used to. In the first six games, there were 2.42 two point field goal attempts to per foul called and 1.50 points in the paint per foul called. In this game it was 1.43 and 1.41. I guess they were trying to impress Jim Burr.
