I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.) This is limited to recruited scholarship players only. Net Points (points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls) Average net points/40 by position, (based on averaging 20+ minutes per game), since the 1980-81 season: Centers 18.6; Power Forwards: 18.4; Small Forwards: 16.1, Shooting Guards: 13.3; Point Guards: 13.5 Jesse Edwards +29NP in 28 minutes = +29NP in 28 minutes = +41.4NP/40 for season Joe Girard +15NP in 25 minutes = +15NP in 25 minutes = +24.0NP/40 for season Symir Torrence +15NP in 22 minutes = +15NP in 22 minutes = +27.3NP/40 for season Judah Mintz +13NP in 26 minutes = +13NP in 26 minutes = +20.0NP/40 for season Maliq Brown +6NP in 13 minutes = +6NP in 13 minutes = +18.5NP/40 for season Mounir Hima +6NP in 8 minutes = +6NP in 8 minutes = +30.0NP/40 for season Chris Bell +5NP in 16 minutes = +5NP in 16 minutes = +12.5NP/40 for season Quadir Copeland +4NP in 11 minutes = +4NP in 11 minutes = +14.5NP/40 for season John Bol Ajak +2NP in 4 minutes = +2NP in 4 minutes = +20.0NP/40 for season Justin Taylor +2NP in 20 minutes = +2NP in 20 minutes = +4.0NP/40 for season Peter Carey +1NP in 4 minutes = +1NP in 4 minutes = +10.0NP/40 for season Benny Williams -3NP in 23 minutes = -3NP in 23 minutes = -5.2NP/40 for season DNP coach’s decision None Injured or ill and couldn’t play None Suspended None Redshirting None Out for the year None Left Team None Awards Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog) (Points plus assists) Joe Girard 19 points and 3 assists = 22 Shooting Efficiency (Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts) Joe Girard 19 points – 5mfg – 0mft = +14 Scoring Efficiency (Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points) Symir Torrance 10 points of 13 = 76.9% My Man (Who played the most minutes?) Jesse Edwards 28 minutes TEAM STATS Possession Rebounding (Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that) We rebounded 10 of our 28 misses = 35.7% They rebounded 8 of their 37 misses = 21.6% Unsettled Situations [Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers) We had 24 points in 22 unsettled situations = 1.091 points/situation They had 30 points in 21 unsettled situations = 1.429 points/situation Manufactured Possessions (One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers) We had 39 + 12 = 51 They had 26 + 13= 39 Scoring Shooting (Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws) We were 24 for 43 on twos, (55.8%), 6 for 12 on threes (50.0%) and 24 for 31 on frees (77.4%) They were 19 for 41 on twos, (46.3%), 8 for 19 on threes (42.1%) and 10 for 13 on frees (76.9%) Points (PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum” POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots) TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint) FT = Free Throws We had 42 PIP, 24 POP, 18 OL, 6 TZ, 24 FT They had 30 PIP, 32 POP, 24 OL, 8 TZ, 10 FT Fast Break Percentage (FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals) We scored 7 FBP in 34 opportunities (20.6%) They scored 13 FBP in 42 opportunities (31.0%) First Chance/Second Chance (FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.) We had 39 FCP and 11 SCP They had 37 FCP and 9 SCP Starters/Bench (Total points – bench points = starters points) Our starters scored 60 points and our bench scored 30 points. Their starters scored 48 points and their bench scored 24 points. Efficiency Assists (The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted) We assisted 12 of our 30 field goals = 44.0% They assisted 13 of their 27 field goals = 48.1% Team Offensive Possession Efficiency (Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions) We scored 90 points in 71 possessions = 1.267 points/ possession They scored 72 points in 70 possessions = 1.029 points/possession It was a 141-possession game. If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession: We scored 90 points in 70 possessions = 1.286 points/ possession They scored 72 points in 66 possessions = 1.091 points/possession Team Shooting Efficiency (Points minus missed field goals and free throws) We scored 90 points, missed 25 field goals and missed 7 free throws = net +58 They scored 72 points, missed 33 field goals and missed 3 free throws = net +36 (Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot) We scored 90 on 43 two-point attempts, 12 three-point attempts and 31 free throw attempts = 79 of a possible 153 points = 58.8% of possible points scored. They scored 72 on 41 two-point attempts, 19 three-point attempts and 13 free throw attempts = 88 of a possible 152 points = 47.4% of possible points scored. Fouls (Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.) We attempted 43 two-point shots and were fouled 17 times = 2.53 They attempted 41 two-point shots and were fouled 10 times = 4.10 Comments: - 12 guys played and 10 of them averaged 10NP/40, my somewhat arbitrary standard for a starter. Justin Taylor missed it because of his 1 for 7 shooting night. But he did have 4 rebounds and 3 steals. - Benny Williams’ career now consists of +28NP in 336 minutes = 3.3NP/40. - We need to respond better to unsettled situations, (takeovers + offensive rebounds). Lehigh outhustled us for 30 points to 24 in those situations. What would a more athletic team do? - We won this by getting to the paint, (42-30) and the line (24-10). We got outscored by smaller margins in treys (18-24) and medium range point jumpers (6-9).
