I’ve added so many things to my post-game “Net Points” posts over the years that it’s become a very long post to read and a longer one to do. I’ve decided to have separate posts for the numbers for a particular game and for the cumulative season totals. It’s the later that takes most of the time and lengthens the post so much. There was too much verbiage and too many numbers. I’m still going to figure the season totals but I’ll post them at three different stages of the season: after the pre-conference schedule, after the conference schedule and after the post season. In the meantime, I’ll go with this stream-lined version of “Net Points, etc.” after each game, with numbers and commentary only for that game. That should make it both quicker to do and more digestible. Net Points (points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls) Frank Howard 20NP in 40 minutes Oshae Brissett 12NP in 40 minutes Marek Dolezaj 10NP in 30 minutes Tyus Battle 9NP in 37 minutes Bourama Sidibe 7NP in 22 minutes Paschal Chukwu 5NP in 18 minutes Matthew Moyer -2NP in 9 minutes Geno Thorpe -3NP in 4 minutes DNP coach’s decision Howard Washington Injured or suspended None Awards Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog) (Points plus assists) Frank Howard 15 + 10 = 25 Scoring Efficiency (Points minus field goal and free throw attempts) Tyus Battle 18 points – 7 mfg – 1 mft = 10 Sat Us Down (Who scored the first SU basket of each half) 1st Half- Frank Howard lay-up 1:41 in 2nd Half- Frank Howard lay-up 24 seconds in TACO Bell MVP (Who scored the point that got us to 70, which gets you free tacos with your ticket stub) Tyus Battle with a free throw with 26 seconds left My Man (Who played the most minutes?) Oshae Brissett and Frank Howard 40 minutes Team Stats: (I’ve decide to put the team that won the stat in bold and ties in italics.) POSSESSION Rebounding (Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that) We rebounded 19 of our 39 misses = 48.7% They rebounded 13 of their 33 misses = 39.4% Effective Offensive Rebounding (Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds) We got 13 points on 19 O-Rebs = 0.684 points/O-reb They got 10 points on 13 O-Rebs = 0.769 points/ O-reb Unforced Turnovers (Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers) We had 13 turnovers – 7 steals = 6 unforced They had 18 turnovers – 12 steals = 6 unforced Points per Takeaway (Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had) We had 22 points from 18 takeaways = 1.222 points/takeaway They had 14 points from 13 takeaways = 1.077 points/takeaway Unsettled Situations (Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeaway: [Second Chance Point + Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers) We had 35 points in 37 unsettled situations = 0.946 points They had 24 points in 26 unsettled situations = 0.923 points Manufactured Possessions (One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers) We had 39 + 18 = 57 They had 33 + 13= 46 Scoring Shooting (shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws) We were 25 for 45 on twos, (55.6%), 3 for 18 on threes (16.7%) and 13 for 20 on frees (65.0%) They were 12 for 28 on twos, (42.9%), 11 for 23 on threes (47.8%) and 13 for 20 on frees (65.0%) Points (PIP= points in the paint, POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP –free throws made, TREY: points from three point shots, TZ= Twilight Zone, which is POP – TREY, two point jumpers from outside the paint, FBP = fast break points POTO= points off turnovers) We had 42 PIP, 17 POP, 9 TREY, 8 TZ, 8 FBP, 22 POTO They had 20 PIP, 37 POP, 33 TREY, 4 TZ, 12 FBP, 14 POTO First Chance/Second Chance (FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.) We had 30 FCP and 22 SCP They had 41 FCP and 7 SCP Starters/Bench (Total points – bench points = starters points) Our starters scored 59 points and our bench scored 13 points Their starters scored 44 points and their bench scored 26 points Assists (The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted) We assisted 12 of our 28 field goals = 42.9% They assisted 22 of their 23 field goals = 95.7% Team Offensive Efficiency (Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions) We scored 72 points in 67 possessions = 1.075 points/possession They scored 70 points in 66 possessions = 1.061 points/ possession It was a 133 possession game. Breakdown by Quarters (Points scored between the beginning of the game and the 10 minute mark of the first half, then halftime, then the 10 minute mark of the second half, the end of regulation and then overtime of there was one) 24-21, 12-14, 17-17, 19-18 Fouls (Two point shots, points in paint and free throws attempted per times fouled.) We attempted 63 two point shots, scored 42 points in the paint, attempted 20 free throws and were fouled 21 times = 3.00; 2.00; 0.95 They attempted 51 two point shots, scored 20 points in the paint, attempted 20 free throws and were fouled 18 times = 2.83; 1.11; 1.11 They were more likely to draw fouls, (even though we were the team driving to the basket and got more foul shots out of each foul. Comments: - Frank Howard has been JB’s “man” 3 times, Tyus Battle, Oshae Brissett, Marek Dolezaj, and Matthew Moyer 1 time each. That’s a lot of “men”. - We are shooting 51% inside the arc and holding the other team to 37% outside of it. We are shooting 29% outside of it with the opposition shooting 34%. Last year we shot 52% inside the arc and 38% outside of it. The opposition shot 50% inside the arc and 34% outside of it. - We have been outscored by 63 points outside the arc, (90-153) but +52 from the Twilight Zone, (66-14). - Is it true that jump shots produce more assists than lay-ups and dunks? Well, Maryland got 22 assists on their 23 baskets (96%), while we got 12 assists on 25 baskets (43%). Frank Howard still had twice as many assists as any other player in the game, (10 of our 12, 83%) - A line from Matt Park’s radio show: Syracuse had outrebounded every team they played this year and just out-rebounded a Maryland team that had out-rebounded every team they had played this year. - This is our cumulative quarterly breakdown, (the points scored in every ten minute segment): 108-84, 103-88, 111-75, 124-111. Jim must be giving a heck of a halftime speech. - On the year our foul ratios are: 2 point FGA - 2.71 vs. 2.10 (we've had the lower number once), PIP - 1.86 vs. 1.11 (we've had the lower number once) and FTA - 1.14 - 1.05 (we've had the higher number 4 times). So we've fairly consistently been more likely to be called for fouls than the other team.
