Team Stats:
(I’ve decided to put the team that won the stat in bold and ties in italics.)

POSSESSION

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)

We rebounded 9 of our 26 misses = 34.6%
They rebounded 12 of their 40 misses = 30.0%

Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)

We got 6 points on 9 O-Rebs = 0.667 points/O-reb
They got 10 points on 12 O-Rebs = 0.833 points/O-reb

Unforced Turnovers
(Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers)

We had 11 turnovers – 7 steals = 4 unforced
They had 7 turnovers – 4 steals = 3 unforced

Points per Takeaway
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)

We had 8 points from 7 takeaways = 1.143 points/takeaway
They had 10 points from 11 takeaways = 0.909 points/takeaway

Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeaway: [Second Chance Point + Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)

We had 14 points in 16 unsettled situations = 0.875 points
They had 20 points in 23 unsettled situations = 0.870 points

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)

We had 37 + 7 = 44
They had 29 + 11 = 40

Scoring

Shooting
(shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)

We were 20 for 36 on twos, (55.6%), 5 for 16 on threes (31.3%) and 7 for 9 on frees (77.8%)
They were 13 for 28 on twos, (46.4%), 7 for 31 on threes (22.6%) and 8 for 12 on frees (66.7%)

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP –free throws made, TREY: points from three point shots, TZ= Twilight Zone, which is POP – TREY, two point jumpers from outside the paint, FBP = fast break points POTO= points off turnovers)

We had 26 PIP, 29 POP, 15 TREY, 14 TZ, 8 POTO, 4 FBP
They had 20 PIP, 27 POP, 21 TREY, 6 TZ, 10 POTO, 8 FBP

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)

We scored 4 FBP in 39 opportunities (10.3%)
They scored 8 FBP in 38 opportunities (21.1%)

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)

We had 45 FCP and 6 SCP
They had 29 FCP and 10 SCP

Last Possessions
(Points scored on the last full possession of a half, a game or an overtime period.)

We scored 2 points
They scored 0 points

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)

Our starters scored 60 points and our bench scored 2 points
Their starters scored 43 points and their bench scored 12 points

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)

We assisted 11 of our 25 field goals = 44.0%
They assisted 13 of their 20 field goals = 65.0%

Team Offensive Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)

We scored 62 points in 58 possessions = 1.069 points/ possession
They scored 55 points in 59 possessions = 0.932 points/possession
It was a 117 possession game. (We are averaging 132 a game in regulation.)

Breakdown by Quarters
(Points scored between the beginning of the game and the 10 minute mark of the first half, then halftime, then the 10 minute mark of the second half, the end of regulation and then overtime of there was one)

11-9, 14-16, 18-16, 19-14

Fouls
(Two point shots and free throws attempted per times fouled.)

We attempted 36 two point shots, attempted 9 free throws and were fouled 13 times = 2.77; 0.69
They attempted 28 two point shots, attempted 12 free throws and were fouled 14 times = 2.00; 0.86

They were more likely to get calls when attempting two point shots and got more free throws out of it when fouled.

Comments:

- We went for 39 points in unsettled situations vs. NC State to 14 in this game.

- We out-rebounded Miami 37-29 but their 12 offensive rebounds mattered. I counted three treys after the Canes rebounded their own misses.

- We attempted only 9 free throws. We had just 6 attempts vs. Notre Dame and had 11 and 9 in the Virginia games. But 6 of our 9 FTA came in the last 40 seconds of the game. We’ve averaged 22 FTA per game. We are running the same offense that got to the line 39 times vs. Wake Forest.

- On the other hand, do we really want the refs calling a lot of fouls?

- For three straight games we’ve had 39 fast break opportunities, (defensive rebounds + blocks + steals) and have scored exactly 4 points off of them each time.

- For the season, going into this game, we averaged 2.07 two point shot attempts per time fouled and 1.24 free throws per foul. The opposition was 2.01/1.06. IN this game we were 2.77/0.69 and they were 2.00/0.86. Miami drew fouls at a normal rate but was less likely to go to the line. We drew fouls at a much lesser rate and went to the foul line far fewer times. Fewer calls were being made and fewer of them were shooting fouls.
