I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.) Net Points (points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls) Alan Griffin +18NP in 40 minutes = +264NP in 554 minutes = +19.1NP/40 for season Quincy Guerrier +14NP in 35 minutes = +302NP in 575 minutes = +21.0NP/40 for season Buddy Boeheim +11NP in 35 minutes = +119NP in 503 minutes = +9.5NP/40 for season Kadary Richmond +8NP in 25 minutes = +156NP in 365 minutes = +17.1NP/40 for season Marek Dolezaj +8NP in 40 minutes = +234NP in 614 minutes = +15.1NP/40 for season Joe Girard +6NP in 20 minutes = +144NP in 502 minutes = +11.5NP/40 for season Robert Braswell +5NP in 5 minutes = +16NP in 109 minutes = +5.9NP/40 for season DNP coach’s decision Frank Anselem 0NP in 0 minutes = +5NP in 26 minutes = +7.7NP/40 for season John Bol Ajak 0NP in 0 minutes = -1NP in 29 minutes = -1.4NP/40 for season Jesse Edwards 0NP in 0 minutes = +4NP in 47 minutes = +3.4NP/40 for season Woody Newton 0NP in 0 minutes = +33NP in 82 minutes = +16.1NP/40 for season Chaz Owens 0NP in 0 minute = 0NP in 1 minute = 0.0NP/40 for season Injured and couldn’t play Bourama Sidibie 0NP in 0 minutes = 0NP in 15 minutes = 0.0NP/40 for season Suspended Redshirting None (that we know of) Out for the year None Left Team None Awards Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog) (Points plus assists) Alan Griffin 22 points and 2 assists = 24 Shooting Efficiency (Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts) Alan Griffin 22 points – 8 mfg – 0 mft = +14 Scoring Efficiency (Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points) Quincy Guerrier 14 points of 26 = 53.8% My Man (Who played the most minutes?) Marek Dolezaj and Alan Griffin 40 minutes TEAM STATS Possession Rebounding (Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that) We rebounded 14 of our 34 misses = 41.2% They rebounded 8 of their 26 misses = 30.8% Effective Offensive Rebounding (Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds) We got 15 points on 14 O-Rebs = 1.071 points/O-Reb They got 8 points on 8 O-Rebs = 1.000 points/O-Reb Unforced Turnovers (Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers) We had 12 turnovers – 6 steals = 4 unforced They had 20 turnovers – 11 steals = 9 unforced Points per Takeover (Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had) We had 21 points from 20 takeovers = 1.050 points/takeaway They had 16 points from 12 takeovers = 1.333 points/takeaway Unsettled Situations (Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeover: [Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers) We had 36 points in 34 unsettled situations = 1.059 points They had 24 points in 20 unsettled situations = 1.200 points Manufactured Possessions (One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers) We had 32 + 20 = 52 They had 28 + 12 = 40 Hustle Stats One of the radio sponsors gives an award to the team that had the most “hustle stats”, which they define as rebounds + blocks + steals. I decided to keep track of that, too: We had 32 + 4 + 11 = 47 They had 28 + 3 + 6 = 37 Scoring Shooting (Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws) We were 19 for 41 on twos, (46.3%), 9 for 19 on threes (47.4%) and 12 for 16 on frees (75.0%) They were 12 for 26 on twos, (46.2%), 8 for 19 on threes (42.1%) and 20 for 24 on frees (83.3%) Combined percentages were: 463 + 474 + 750 = 1,687 vs. 462 + 421 + 833 = 1,716 = -29 Points (PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum” POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots) TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint) FBP = fast break points POTO= points off turnovers We had 28 PIP, 37 POP, 27 OL, 10 TZ, 21 POTO, 12 FBP They had 20 PIP, 28 POP, 24 OL, 4 TZ, 16 POTO, 9 FBP Fast Break Percentage (FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals) We scored 12 FBP in 33 opportunities (36.4%) They scored 9 FBP in 29 opportunities (31.0%) First Chance/Second Chance (FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.) We had 38 FCP and 15 SCP They had 31 FCP and 8 SCP Starters/Bench (Total points – bench points = starters points) Our starters scored 64 points and our bench scored 13 points. Their starters scored 49 points and their bench scored 19 points. Assists (The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted) We assisted 13 of our 28 field goals = 46.4% They assisted 15 of their 20 field goals = 75.0% Team Offensive Possession Efficiency (Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions) We scored 77 points in 66 possessions = 1.167 points/ possession They scored 68 points in 67 possessions = 1.015 points/possession It was a 133-possession game. If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession: We scored 77 points in 68 possessions = 1.132 points/ possession They scored 68 points in 56 possessions = 1.214 points/possession Team Shooting Efficiency (Points minus missed field goals and free throws) We scored 77 points, missed 32 field goals and missed 4 free throws = net +41 They scored 68 points, missed 25 field goals and missed 4 free throws = net +39 (Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot) We scored 77 on 41 two point attempts, 19 three point attempts and 16 free throw attempts = 77 of a possible 155 points = 49.7% of possible points scored. They scored 68 on 26 two point attempts, 19 three point attempts and 24 free throw attempts = 68 of a possible 133 points = 51.1% of possible points scored. Fouls (Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.) We attempted 41 two point shots and were fouled 15 times = 2.73 They attempted 26 two point shots and were fouled 17 times = 1.52 At this rate, if they’d taken 41 two point shots, they’d have been fouled 27 times. Comments - The story of the game was rebounding. We were down 10-16 at halftime on the boards, which would become 20-32 = -12 with the same numbers in the second half. That’s our formula for losing. We’ve lost every game where the boards were that one-sided and won every game it wasn’t. But we owned the second half boards, 22-12 for a combined 32-28 edge, which put together with another 20 takeover game gave us an edge in ‘manufactured possessions’ 52-40. There’s no way you’re beating us if you give us an edge like that. We had lost the rebounding battle the previous 7 games in a row. - We’ve had those two 20 takeover games but against Clemson we had just 12 points after their turnovers: in this one we had 21. And we won by 9 points.
