Team Stats:
(I’ve decided to put the team that won the stat in bold and ties in italics.)

POSSESSION

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)

We rebounded 9 of our 23 misses = 39.1%
They rebounded 9 of their 25 misses = 36.0%

Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)

We got 7 points on 9 O-Rebs = 0.775 points/O-reb
They got 9 points on 9 O-Rebs = 1.000 points/O-reb

Unforced Turnovers
(Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers)

We had 15 turnovers – 5 steals = 10 unforced
They had 19 turnovers – 11 steals = 8 unforced

Points per Takeaway
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)

We had 32 points from 19 takeaways = 1.737 points/takeaway
They had 14 points from 15 takeaways = 0.933 points/takeaway

Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeaway: [Second Chance Point + Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)

We had 39 points in 28 unsettled situations = 1.393 points
They had 23 points in 24 unsettled situations = 0.958 points

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)

We had 25 + 19 = 44
They had 23 + 15 = 38

Scoring

Shooting
(shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)

We were 18 for 30 on twos, (60.0%), 5 for 14 on threes (35.7%) and 19 for 27 on frees (70.4%)
They were 17 for 26 on twos, (65.4%), 10 for 23 on threes (43.5%) and 10 for 13 on frees (76.9%)

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP –free throws made, TREY: points from three point shots, TZ= Twilight Zone, which is POP – TREY, two point jumpers from outside the paint, FBP = fast break points POTO= points off turnovers)

We had 30 PIP, 21 POP, 15 TREY, 6 TZ, 32 POTO, 4 FBP
They had 30 PIP, 34 POP, 30 TREY, 4 TZ, 14 POTO, 6 FBP

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)

We scored 4 FBP in 39 opportunities (10.3%)
They scored 6 FBP in 31 opportunities (19.4%)

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)

We had 40 FCP and 7 SCP
They had 49 FCP and 9 SCP

Last Possessions
(Points scored on the last full possession of a half, a game or an overtime period.)

We scored 2 points
They scored 3 points

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)

Our starters scored 62 points and our bench scored 8 points
Their starters scored 54 points and their bench scored 20 points

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)

We assisted 15 of our 23 field goals = 65.2%
They assisted 17 of their 27 field goals = 63.0%

Team Offensive Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)

We scored 70 points in 63 possessions = 1.111 points/ possession
They scored 74 points in 64 possessions = 1.156 points/possession
It was a 127 possession game. (We are averaging 132 a game in regulation.)

Breakdown by Quarters
(Points scored between the beginning of the game and the 10 minute mark of the first half, then halftime, then the 10 minute mark of the second half, the end of regulation and then overtime of there was one)

20-17, 12-18, 20-13, 20-26

Fouls
(Two point shots, points in paint and free throws attempted per times fouled.)

We attempted 30 two point shots, scored 30 points in the paint, attempted 27 free throws and were fouled 26 times = 1.15; 1.15; 1.04
They attempted 26 two point shots, scored 30 points in the paint, attempted 13 free throws and were fouled 16 times = 1.63; 1.88; 0.81

We were more likely to get calls when attempting two point shots and to be fouled scoring in the paint and we got more free throws out of it when fouled.

Comments:

- Teams rediscovered the offensive rebound, getting 28 of 48 of their misses (37.5%), the highest combined figure since the Florida State game. But they didn’t take a lot of advantage of it with 16 second chance points.

- We got 32 points off 19 NC State turnovers while they got 14 points off our 15 turnovers, a huge advantage for us that wasn’t quite enough to win us the game. The second most points off turnovers by either team in any SU game this year was 23 by us vs. Oakland.

- Our points per turnover was 1,684. We’ve actually topped that twice with 13/7 vs. Virginia and 20/11 vs. Louisville, high ratios for a team that doesn’t fast break much. It can be an important stat. Brent Axe seems to know this, judging by what he says at 9:30 of this summary of the Wake Forest game on Sunday: and the :6:05 mark of his description of last night’s game: Syracuse basketball loses to NC State 74-70: Brent Axe recap

Hmmm… you aren’t reading my posts are you, Brent? (I love his line aobut the refs getting new whistles for Valentine’s day!)

- We won the first ten minutes of each half 40-30. We lost the last ten minutes 30-44. Did the pressure defense wear us down?

- I you average our foul percentages on two point shots and those of NC State you get 1.39. That is the lowest of the season, (vs. Kansas it was 1.44).

- Strangely, that does not apply to three point shots, where the combined percentage was 1.515. . The games against Toledo (0.995), Kansas (1.445), Connecticut (1.265), St. Bonaventure (1.02), Virginia Tech (1.215), Wake Forest (1.29), Florida State (1.185), Pittsburgh (1.335), Boston College (1.44), Pittsburgh (1.27), Georgia Tech (1.335) and Wake forest (1.325) all had lower averages, (and thus more fouls called). I think the problem here is that it’s a bad metric: It’s made shots per foul whereas fouls usually result in missed shots. The two point shot comparison is about attempts, not points scored. For that reason I’m going to drop this stat in future summaries.
