I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.)
Net Points
(points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls)
Average net points/40 by position, (based on averaging 20+ minutes per game), since the 1980-81 season:
Centers 18.6; Power Forwards: 18.4; Small Forwards: 16.1, Shooting Guards: 13.3; Point Guards: 13.5
(I’ll use the Yahoo Box Score for the player’s minutes:
The Downside - NC State )
Jesse Edwards +24NP in 31 minutes = +327NP in 634 minutes = +20.6NP/40 for season
Joe Girard +22NP in 31 minutes = +262NP in 740 minutes = +14.2NP/40 for season
Cole Swider +21NP in 39 minutes = +273NP in 751 minutes = +14.5NP/40 for season
Jimmy Boeheim +17NP in 40 minutes = +267NP in 765 minutes = +14.0NP/40 for season
Buddy Boeheim +11NP in 33 minutes = +317NP in 825 minutes = +15.4NP/40 for season
Benny Williams 0NP in 5 minutes = +15NP in 241 minutes = +2.5NP/40 for season
Symir Torrence -1NP in 11 minutes = +67NP in 254 minutes = +10.6NP/40 for season
Frank Anselem -2NP in 4 minutes = +51NP in 207 minutes = +9.9NP/40 for season
DNP coach’s decision
Chaz Owens 0NP in 0 minutes = +3NP in 5 minutes = +24.0NP/40 for season
Bourama Sidibie 0NP in 0 minutes = +1NP in 8 minutes = +5.0NP/40 for season
Injured or ill and couldn’t play
John Bol Ajak 0NP in 0 minutes = +4NP in 30 minutes = +5.3NP/40 for season

Joe Girard 18 points and 8 assists = 26
Shooting Efficiency
(Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts)
Cole Swider 19 points – 2mfg – 0mft = +17
Scoring Efficiency
(Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points)
Cole Swider 19 points of 23 = 82.6%
My Man
(Who played the most minutes?)
Jimmy Boeheim 40 minutes
TEAM STATS
Possession
Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 6 of our 25 misses = 24.0%
They rebounded 11 of their 38 misses = 28.9%
Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)
We got 9 points on 6 O-Rebs = 1.500 points/O-Reb
They got 6 points on 11 O-Rebs = .545 points/O-Reb
Points per Takeover
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)
We had 11 points from 7 takeovers = 1.571 points/takeaway
They had 17 points from 11 takeovers = 1.545 points/takeaway
Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeover: [Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 20 points in 13 unsettled situations = 1.500 points/situation
They had 23 points in 22 unsettled situations = 1.045 points/situation
Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 33 + 7 = 40
They had 30 + 11 = 41
Scoring
Shooting
(Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 21 for 35 on twos, (60.0%), 11 for 19 on threes (57.9%) and 14 for 18 on frees (77.8%)
They were 13 for 28 on twos, (46.4%), 16 for 39 on threes (41.0%) and 8 for 8 on frees (100.0%)
Points
(PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum”
POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made
OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots)
TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint)
FT = Free Throws
We had 36 PIP, 39 POP, 33 OL, 6 TZ, 14 FT
They had 24 PIP, 50 POP, 48 OL, 2 TZ, 8 FT
Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 8 FBP in 34 opportunities (23.5%)
They scored 14 FBP in 29 opportunities (48.3%)
First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 58 FCP and 9 SCP
They had 64 FCP and 6SCP
Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 89 points and our bench scored 0 points.
Their starters scored 68 points and their bench scored 14 points.
Efficiency
Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 16 of our 32 field goals = 50.0%
They assisted 20 of their 29 field goals = 69.0%
Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 89 points in 68 possessions = 1.309 points/ possession
They scored 82 points in 67 possessions = 1.223 points/possession
It was a 135-possession game.
If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:
We scored 89 points in 63 possessions = 1.413 points/ possession
They scored 82 points in 71 possessions = 1.155 points/possession
Team Shooting Efficiency
(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)
We scored 89 points, missed 22 field goals and missed 4 free throws = net +63
They scored 82 points, missed 38 field goals and missed 0 free throws = net +44
(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)
We scored 89 on 35 two-point attempts, 19 three-point attempts and 18 free throw attempts = 89 of a possible 145 points = 61.4% of possible points scored.
They scored 82 on 28 two-point attempts, 39 three-point attempts and 8 free throw attempts = 82 of a possible 181 points = 45.3% of possible points scored.
Fouls
(Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.)
We attempted 35 two-point shots and were fouled 15 times = 2.33
They attempted 28 two-point shots and were fouled 14 times = 2.00
Comments:
- We finally won the “Points off Turnovers” stats, on a percentage basis anyway. But we had more turnovers and thus fewer points off turnovers. We have had more points off turnovers than our opponents once in the last nine games and have been out-scored in this stat by 110-152 over that span.
- In the last two games we are 47 for 79 on two point shot attempts, (59.5%). This is a huge predictor of victory.
- Any time the other team misses 16 more field goals than we do, we’re gonna win.
