I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.) This is limited to recruited scholarship players only.

Net Points
(points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls)

Average net points/40 by position, (based on averaging 20+ minutes per game), since the 1980-81 season:
Centers 18.6; Power Forwards: 18.4; Small Forwards: 16.1, Shooting Guards: 13.3; Point Guards: 13.5

Judah Mintz +25NP in 39 minutes = +315NP in 835 minutes = +15.1NP/40 for season
Jesse Edwards +25NP in 40 minutes = +520NP in 826 minutes = +25.2NP/40 for season
Maliq Brown +11NP in 37 minutes = +227NP in 477 minutes = +19.0NP/40 for season
Joe Girard +10NP in 32 minutes = +309NP in 888 minutes = +13.9NP/40 for season
Chris Bell +4NP in 34 minutes = +95NP in 519 minutes = +7.3NP/40 for season
Benny Williams +3NP in 3 minutes = +141NP in 512 minutes = +11.0NP/40 for season
Justin Taylor 0NP in 6 minutes = +108NP in 419 minutes = +10.3NP/40 for season
Symir Torrence -3NP in 4 minutes = +104NP in 300 minutes = +13.9NP/40 for season

DNP coach’s decision
John Bol Ajak 0NP in 0 minutes = +34NP in 120 minutes = +11.3NP/40 for season
Quadir Copeland 0NP in 0 minutes = +25NP in 100 minutes = +10.0NP/40 for season
Mounir Hima 0NP in 0 minutes = +50NP in 181 minutes = +11.0NP/40 for season

Injured or ill and couldn’t play
None

Suspended
None

Redshirting
Peter Carey 0NP in 0 minutes = -2NP in 20 minutes = -4.0NP/40 for season

Out for the year
None

Left Team

Awards

Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog)
(Points plus assists)
Judah Mintz 20 points and 9 assists = 29

Shooting Efficiency
(Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts)
Judah Mintz 20 points – 5mfg – 0mft = +15

Scoring Efficiency
(Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points)
Maliq Brown 10 points of 12 = 83.3%

My Man
(Who played the most minutes?)
Jesse Edwards 40 minutes

TEAM STATS

Possession

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 9 of our 36 misses = 25.0%
They rebounded 16 of their 43 misses = 37.2%

Unsettled Situations
[Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 19 points in 21 unsettled situations = 0.905 points/situation
They had 29 points in 26 unsettled situations = 1.077 points/situation

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 43 + 10 = 53
They had 36 + 12 = 48

Scoring

Shooting
(Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 22 for 47 on twos, (46.8%), 5 for 15 on threes (33.3%) and 16 for 17 on frees (94.1%)
They were 21 for 38 on twos, (53.3%), 9 for 34 on threes (26.5%) and 3 for 5 on frees (60.0%)

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum”
POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made
OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots)
TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint)
FT = Free Throws

We had 34 PIP, 25 POP, 15 OL, 10 TZ, 16 FT
They had 30 PIP, 39 POP, 27 OL, 12 TZ, 3 FT

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 21 FBP in 36 opportunities (58.3%)
They scored 13 FBP in 40 opportunities (32.5%)

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 27 FCP and 11 SCP
They had 40 FCP and 16 SCP

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 73 points and our bench scored 2 points.
Their starters scored 53 points and their bench scored 19 points.

Efficiency

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 13 of our 27 field goals = 48.1%
They assisted 21 of their 30 field goals = 70.0%

Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 75 points in 71 possessions = 1.058 points/ possession
They scored 72 points in 70 possessions = 1.029 points/possession
It was a 141-possession game.

If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:
We scored 75 points in 70 possessions = 1.071 points/ possession
They scored 72 points in 72 possessions = 1.000 points/possession

Team Shooting Efficiency

(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)

We scored 75 points, missed 35 field goals and missed 1 free throws = net +39
They scored 72 points, missed 42 field goals and missed 2 free throws = net +28

(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)

We scored 75 on 47 two-point attempts, 15 three-point attempts and 17 free throw attempts = 75 of a possible 156 points = 48.1% of possible points scored.
They scored 72 on 38 two-point attempts, 34 three-point attempts and 5 free throw attempts = 72 of a possible 183 points = 39.5% of possible points scored.

Fouls

(Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.)
We attempted 47 two-point shots and were fouled 19 times = 2.47
They attempted 38 two-point shots and were fouled 11 times = 3.45

Comments:

- An 18 point 16 rebound game by Jesse Edwards didn’t change his season NP/40 at all- he played 40 minutes (with only 3 fouls) and had 25 NP, exactly his season average, (25.2). It wasn’t an above average game for him, except in how many minutes he was able to play. (By the way, Zach Edey’s NP/40 is 35.8!)

- We have 10 players who are averaging 10NP per 40 minutes, my somewhat arbitrary standard for a guy who could start. But the gap between he starters and reserves has grown and so JB is sticking with his starters now that every game in a ‘must win’.

- We had 21 fast break points to 13. That was our second best total and the second best combined total of the season, (vs. Pittsburgh, it was 27-17). Basketball like it oughta be!

- We had 27 First Chance Points to 40 and 11 Second Chance Points to 16. How did we win? 21-13 fast break points and 16-3 free throws.

- The last two games: Starters 147 points. Bench: 4
