Team Shooting Efficiency (Points minus missed field goals and free throws) We scored 85 points, missed 31 field goals and 10 missed free throws = net 44 They scored 93 points, missed 37 field goals and 3 missed free throws = net 53 (Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot) We scored 85 on 29 two point attempts, 31 three point attempts and 23 free throw attempts = 85 of a possible 174 points = 48.9% of possible points scored. They scored 93 on 33 two point attempts, 29 three point attempts and 37 free throw attempts = 93 of a possible 190 points = 48.9% of possible points scored. Breakdown by Quarters (Points scored between the beginning of the game and the 10 minute mark of the first half, then halftime, then the 10 minute mark of the second half, the end of regulation and then overtime of there was one) 23-20, 23-21, 17-26, 22-24 Fouls (Two point shots and free throws attempted per times fouled.) We attempted 29 two point shots, attempted 23 free throws and were fouled 18 times = 1.61; 1.28 They attempted 33 two point shots, attempted 37 free throws and were fouled 26 times = 1.27; 1.42 They were more likely to get calls when attempting two point shots and got more free throws per foul by significant margins. Comments - We got tacos for the first time this month! The last time we scored 70+ points was the first Boston College game on 1/30. - I realize that North Carolina is the better rebounding team, although they aren’t as tall as our team, (6-9, 6-8, 6-6 up front when Little is in). I realize that it’s harder to rebound from a zone than a man-for-man, (although we are only in a zone when on defense). But getting out-rebounded 25-46, rebounding 22% of our misses while they rebound 51% of theirs, is a bit much. - How did we stay in this game against such a rebounding advantage? We kept playing defense even when we didn’t get the ball. They scored 16 points off of 18 offensive rebounds. We scored 13 off of 8. That means we were twice as likely to score when we got the ball back as they were. Of all the rare stats in a game full of them, that’s probably the rarest. - JB likes the zone because he feels that a rebounding deficit can be made up for in turnover margin. It usually works but in this game we were -21 on the boards and -1 in turnover margin. That’s -22. We’ve had one other game this year when we were minus double figures in what I call “manufactured possessions”: we were -13 vs. Buffalo. So this was by far the worst game this year in terms of possessing the ball. - By the usual possession formula, FGA – O-Reb + TO + (.475 x FTA), we had 72 possessions and they had 71. But let’s eliminate the middle two stats so we consider an offensive rebound an extra possession and a turnover one less possession. Now it’s 71 possessions for Syracuse and 79 for North Carolina. Our efficiency goes from 85/72 = 1.181 to 85/71 = 1.197. Theirs goes from 93/71 = 1.310 to 93/79 = 1.177. By that we were more offensive efficient team but they won it on possessions. - It’s amazing that we dominated the opening sets with 55-28 First Chance Points and yet lost by 8. We got out-run 4-15 in Fast Break Points and out-scored from the line 13-34. That’s why we lost. - We just played teams ranked #18, #1 and #5 and our bench out-scored theirs by a combined 50-36: 22-14, 12-4 and 16-18. Who says JB never plays his bench? - Both teams scored 48.9% of the points they would have scored if all their shots went in. But they would have won by 16 rather than 8 because they were +14 in free throw attempts. (They tried 4 more two point shots and we tried 2 more treys.) - The real fouls discrepancy was in the first half: We attempted 17 two point shots and drew 6 fouls (2.83) while they attempted 12 two point shots and got 14 whistles (0.86). We attempted 5 free throws on 6 fouls, (0.83) while they went to the line 21 times on 14 fouls (1.50). They were three times as likely to get the call and twice as likely to get free throws out of it. [/QUOTE]
